Scam
November 20, 2016

. I bought my ticket through them to fly back to the country. I have to change the date to fly back to the United States because I have to spend more days helping the missionary group i am with. Their insurance which is Tripmate told me, I need to have documented military order since I am in the military or documented medical reason in order to change the date. I do not have any of those because it's for a mission trip. I will have to buy another ticket if I want to change the date. I believe that's a rip off. You buy a ticket plus the insurance in case there is a change in the plan. Still, your trip is not covered with tripmate. That is sad. That is a rip off

Coronavirus
April 10, 2020

Even though you may have booked your flight ahead of time and when things started shutting down from the Coronavirus inflight started to being changed and rerouted in trying to contact anybody to work things out your time lapse because you couldn't get answers from the airline because the virus had them not answering phones you buy your insurance through this company and they back out saying that viruses are not part of the plan even though the virus stopped anybody from answering the phone so you could work things out I wouldn't try and fly with these guys or even use this insurance company if somebody paid me to and then paid me on top of it for doing it.

Borderline Fraudulent
April 24, 2023

My family and I went to Holland for our vacation. My son and I contracted Covid and we could not fly back on our scheduled flight. Sadly, Holland doctors and hospitals won't see patients with Covid, and ESPECIALLY if you are a foreigner. So we couldn't get any official documentation. We had to change our flight and book alternative hotels until we were able to fly. When we submitted our insurance claim, they insisted on documentation that we couldn't possibly get since Holland doctors/hospitals turned us away. But the worst part is the COMPLETE lack of response and communication from TripMate. You have to file online and if you need to talk to someone, good luck. You may get someone on the phone but they basically tell you to keep checking the online portal – which tells you nothing.

Basically TripMate plays the "wait them out until they forget game". They are AWFUL, a complete waste of money, and (IMO) borderline fraudulent as they take your money but really have no intention of ever paying out a claim.

NO REFUND
June 22, 2022

I was on a plane for 15 mins and was asked to get off due to number of flights in the air. We were told 1hr and 30 min wait. In 25 mins I received a text that my flight had boarded and left. I tried to get another flight but none available. While at the Delta desk my passport went missing and has not been recovered. I spoke with a Tripmate agent today and was told that I would receive nothing because Passports are not covered and only a slim chance of any refund for the flight leaving without a boarding call. All I can say is 1500. 00 gone. I should have read the reviews for the whole trip. DEVESTATED! PLEASE READ THE SMALL PRINT. I am not rich and have no way of recovering my money.

They have allegedly approved our claim from January. It's May, and we still don't have our check. They claimed they cut it on the 22nd of April. Then they claimed they hold checks for 10 days. Then they claim it will be sent by May 13th. Total runaround because they apparently have no intention of paying the claim. Total scam company.

My wife and I were scheduled for a river trip with Viking.
Trip Mate was the Trip Insurance I remember being directed
To. Just a few days prior to our departure I came down with
Double Sciatica and was confined to bed for over a month with
A couple of months additional recuperation.
I completed the Claim requirements while in bed, getting letters
From two doctors confirming my affliction and inability to take
The trip.
I have contacted the company numerous times. One time they said
Checks had been mailed. Having not received any checks, I suggested
They have the accounting department confirm the checks had not
Cleared the bank. They claim they have stopped payment but the first
Company representative I talked to today, could find no records
That took place. She seemed demoralized. I suggested she look up the
Company on the internet and put the word "fraudulent" after Trip Mate.
After at least seven phone calls, the latest, number two today, a few minutes ago which went dead while I was on hold, I now understand these representatives I have been talking to, seem to have no meaningful communications with the management of the company. They are only there to get a paycheck and listen to customer complaints. A very rewarding job. I feel sorry for them.
I have over $16,000 at stake here! I do not intend to play nice anymore!

The WORST!
July 18, 2024

We had a trip booked on Viking due to sail on April 17,2024. My wife broke her leg on March 27 and we cancelled our trip and submitted our claim beginning on March 29. Viking approved our claim promptly (refunding the costs of our excursions, over $4000 almost immediately) and gave me helpful instructions on submitting our claims to TripMate. From there out the experience was horrible. After numerous calls and long waits on hold, we got two envelopes in the mail postmarked May 14. Each contained a letter saying our refunds of over $17,000 each were enclosed — but they were not. Numerous calls followed with what are ironically called "customer service reps" and their supervisors. I was given a lot of what might be called "misinformation" but as time when by they escalated into falsehoods and then outright lies. I was told that they would have to stop payment and that there would then be a three week delay before new checks could be issued. At the end of the three weeks I called and was then told it would then be another three weeks before they could issue the new checks. At least twice I was specifically told that the checks had been issued only to find out a couple of weeks later that they had not been issued. Supervisors told me that they had expedited payment, but still no payments. Finally, today, July 17, we received our checks. The cover form said that the payments had been issued on June 29, but the envelopes were postmarked July15. Obviously their game is to slow roll all claims, impose artificial delays, and lie to their claimants. We have taken several cruises with Viking and really liked them. But this has colored my feelings about Viking — at one point I reached out to our Viking rep to ask if they could contact tripMate on my behalf. I was told there was nothing they could do. If, and it is a big "if"; we ever book with Viking again, we will certainly not use TripMate for travel insurance.

I purchased Trip Cancellation Coverage from Trip Mate travel insurance through CheapOair back in June of 2018. Our trip was cancelled. I submitted a claim to Trip Mate. I received a letter addressed to another person rejecting his claim. When I was finally able to contacted them they said it was a mistake, but my claim was denied. I filed an appeal, and to date I have only received emails (when I inquire when I'll hear from them) stating they are backlogged and will get to it when they can. They have timelines in their policy for their response time and they have broken every one of them by months. Stay away from Trip Mate, their insurance certainly seems to be a scam!

Real Scammers, Warning
November 22, 2020

They are here to rip you off, read reviews before purchasing insurance from these people, they get the insurance and when it comes to flight they do all they can, not to pay, they have all the excuses possible not to pay you what they have promised to, they are terrible, avoid them, I wish I had read the reviews first, but I did not, I paid 250$ for insurance on a flight 1000$, and I had contacted them way in advance before they flight and explained the situation and their untrained staff said all is good, just wait and after the flight date submit a claim and you can guess the results.

My entire flight to Jamaica was canceled by AA, abruptly due to shortage. We were in the car on the way to the airport as our flight was a 2am chk in for international. We quickly bought a SW ticket to get to our destination and tried AA and no one would answer. I filed a claim with TRIPMATE and they have NO phone number- and declined it as my vacation started on 6-25 (at 2am) but the flight was canceled at 1150pm on 6-24. They said it wasn't the start of my vacation!
I did an appeal and they said the same thing. How is the rule to arrive 2 hours before on international, and me on my way to the airport for the flight to be canceled not an interruption of my vacation?
Please do yourself a FAVOR DO NOT USE THEM! Use a reputable credit card that offers protection. This is a scam and I'm filing suit with the BBB!

If I were go into detail about my claim and the specifics about how poorly all this is handled, this review would be pages long. So instead, I'll just compile a bullet list of everything you can expect from TripMate.
The templates on the website are so poorly designed they are barely usable.
They let you fill the forms out "online" only to make you print them to sign them, then scan them back in and e-mail them. Extremely inefficient.
They will lose your documentation including your bank and credit card info. Or at least, that's what I assumed happened because I was asked 4 months later to send the exact same digital file I already sent, and was not provided an explanation as to why even when I asked directly.
Expect to have to call the customer service line ALOT. I called 14 times across 5 months.
When you call the customer service line the representative will tell you your claim is "being processed" (no $#*!…). They have no way of actually doing anything or finding out information.
If someone sends an email to have your claim "expedited," nothing actually happens.
There is no manager available to speak with you.
If you say you will hold until there is a manager available, the rep will say they're not allowed to do that (this happened multiple times).
If your conversation gets heated, suddenly a manager will be available.
The supervisor will assure you he will look into it personally, and that you can call later and ask for him specifically.
He will refuse to speak to you when you call and ask for him specifically.
Phone calls will not be returned in the timeframe discussed.
The manager who promised to call you back personally will make a rep you talked to 4 phone calls ago make the call.
When they finally send a check, it will be for half the amount you tried to claim.
They will not send a paper check to your physical address even though you discussed it specifically with two separate representatives.
I wish I had anything good to say about TripMate but I really don't. I will never be purchasing a plan from them again. Lesson learned.

When people buy travel insurance, they purchase it for the days they travel. If you an airline loses your bags, during this time, YOU ARE NOT COVERED BY TRIP MATE, if you incur the expenses after your travel dates. For instance, my bags were lost during my coverage travel dates, but I needed clothes and medication due to my lost bags, after the date I thought my travel was supposed to end. In essence you need to EXTEND your coverage a few more days so you can replace your items. TripMate takes advantage of people thinking they are covered for their travel dates, when an incident takes place, rather than after the travel date when you need to buy lost stuff.

Here's the exact wording from TripMate: Our records show that you purchased your policy on July 10,2022 and elected the start and end dates ofJuly 11,2022 to July 13,2022. Therefore, your effective dates of coverage for Baggage Delay is July 11,2022 – July 13,2022. As the information on your claim form shows that your baggage was delayed duringa flight on July 12,2022, and your expenses were incurred between July 14,2022 – July 22,2022, we are unable to consider these covered baggage delay expenses. Additionally, the plan only provides coverage for baggage delay En Route to your Destination only. As the baggage delay was during your return home and the delivery confirmation provided shows the delivery of your baggage to your home, we are unable to consider this a covered baggage delay in any case. Consequently, we must respectfully decline your request for reimbursement.
