I signed up for thumbtack to promote my business and reach more customers. That was a mistake. Thumbtack charged me inconsistent fees for the job contacts, including leads that contained false information from the customer. Thumbtack posts no customer service contact information on their app, you have to google them to find a support phone number. Any business that doesn't provide support numbers to its clients is clearly not user friendly. I was told that the service fees are based on how much work thumbtack thinks that I'm going to do on the job, and are not based on my job cost estimate. Thumbtack charged me a fee of $9 on a $600 quote, and $15 on a $200 quote.
Thumbtack charges you once a customer contacts you, whether you take the job or not. This is just a bad service overall, definitely not worth the arbitrary fees that thumbtack charges you.
If there was a set fee schedule, a user friendly contact method between pro and customer, a better payment method, and an easy way to actually contact thumbtack customer service, it could be a decent company.
Unfortunately, thumbtack seems more interested in taking a cut of our profits than actually making their system better.
I deactivated my account and will stick with the advertisers that have been bringing me continued business at reasonable rates
First time customer need help arranging my bedroom they worked three in a half hours straight. I was I was happy with the work especially because I was sick and just came out of the hospital.
They used to seem legit about 4 years ago. But now they are terrible. STAY AWAY. A waste of money to bid many jobs that seem suspiciously fake. I hope they are caught in their lies.
You will spend your time filling out forms and then expect frustrating emails about how you seem suspicious because your currently out of the country... They delet everything without knowledge... GIANT WASTE OF TIME
Go direct don't use these idiots please!
I used their services before and hired 3 times from their site.
Plumbing service was ok but the other ones are not so good.
I filed complaints but did not receive any feedback that are helpful
I will tell everyone that I know to stop using Thumbtack. They rip off all hardworking Pros. They also steal money from customers. First they lure Pros to get in, new pros would get multiple gold leads for small jobs, they will probably just send that individual leads to single provider so there is no competition. As time past by, they would offer Pros to upgrade their weekly budget, claiming to offer some free leads but nothing ever happen! So the Pros would end up making multiple balance top ups, Thumbtacks will then send Pros a whole bunch of garbage leads to eat ip the balance that the Pro top up. All leads a non disputable, all Pros get ripped off.
For customers, Thumbtacks lure them to sign up some type of membership by offering them money back guarantee up to $10,000, when something happen to customers, for example, dishonest Pro/contractors damage customer property, the Pros left unresolved, Thumbtacks is supposed to cover all the repair costs based on the membership, just like insurance premium. However, I'm no circumstances that the customers can reach Thumbtack to file a claim, nor get in touch with customers by just a whole bunch of bot chats.
Thumbtack is fraudulent company, they take advantage of the home improvement market for both Pros and customers poor business connection, they are stealing money from Pro and customers. The government should intervene their fraudulent activities. Their CEO should be placed in federal prison.
Yes, there are scammers out there, but not off of here as far as I know! Everyone we have contacted and used have been friendly professional and do GREAT work. Well done
This site is terrible. I had 3 contractors come out and all 3 complained about thumbtack and their charges. Their bids were very high and they just seemed pissed beyond good service.
So happy with the service we got from this company. They did everything they were paid to do and did a great job. Easy to deal with. Yes I would recommend them.
Judith and her crew were outstanding on the jobs I had them do for me. They arrived on time, ready to work, and took no shortcuts. I would definitely use them again.
Hi all,
My husband and I used this website to accumulate some more customers for our Construction business. We had some disappointments with the constructors that we used, therefore, some customers had to wait longer than they should. Thumbtack, without contacting us or warning us, decided to give them refund that they supposedly deserve, and without saying anything or asking us- what happened - just took the money out of the account that we used to pay for credits on the website. BE CAUTIOS AND DO NOT USE THIS WEBSITE. THEY WILL SCREW YOU OVER WITHOUT ANY WARNING OR A CHANCE FOR US TO FIX IT.
I have been with thumbtack.com for 7 years or so as a pro. At first it was good but over the last 4 years it has turned into a money pit and a hassle. The customer service for pros is horrible, theh lie they cheat the pros and I will be leaving thumbtack all together. I SPEND ENTIRELY TOO MUCH MONEY WITH THEM TO BE TREATED THE WAY THEY TREAT ME. THE PRO PRICING HAS TRIPLED.IN 4 YEARS AND NEVER A WARNING. TOTAL CROOKS NOW IN MY OPINION.
It's a scam, lot of fake request and thumtack is not doing anything about it when you report it because they make money out of those fake requests, so they don't take any action against them.
I believe this business is a ripoff. We are a cover band and have been playing for years with good response from other booking sites. I get about 10 times as many request for bids from Thumbtack than all the others put together. The problem is I have yet to get one reply on a bid, request for more information or a contract. In that you have to pay a fee up front to get leads and they deduct different amounts depending on the lead, just does not ring well with us. Yesterday, a Tuesday, I got 8, yes 8, leads for a wedding band in the same day. I passed on all as my experience in the pass is it is a waste of time and money. We are a seasoned group that get many gigs playing and always looking for ways to get more. Which got us to try Thumbtack. Most leads we get have questionable information about them and errors. We have received many with the same information or errors in the request. Just can't believe so many different people make the same errors or ask the same questions. Besides with other sites we use, about half request more information or respond one way or the other. Not going so far to say this is a scam but do believe they send out false leads just to get you to use up your funds and have to deposit more.
I hired two different furniture assemblers and both times they lied that they were coming out to assemble some furniture for me and then someone else showed up who had no experience assembling furniture. The person who lies and says they are coming out thinks he can make more money if he pays someone else $7 an hour under the table and does not do the work himself. So they hire people who have no idea how to assemble furniture. The guy who showed up wasted 5 hours of my time, could not assemble the furniture, destroyed my new metal bed and then it was hard to get him out of my house. I had to have the original guy come out in the evening and assemble the furniture. He had been drinking and had to bring his young son with him, could not afford a babysitter and his son was commenting about how often his father gets drunk. In the other case the one guy showed up with another guy, told me the other guy will assemble the furniture and that he is the boss and runs many businesses. The guy he left with me had no background in assembling furniture. What they find out is the people they send out to replace them end up costing them more money than if they simply did the job themselves. And, you have no idea who is actually going to show up.
I'm new to AZ and AARP couldn't do an out of state income tax return, so I googled the top 10 tax preparers and THUMBTACK came up. I selected one of two in this area and was completed thrilled with David's experience, honest demeanor, knowledge and ability to offer me options regarding my return. The price was so reasonable ($100 less than the other 'corporate office') and I will return to him for as long as I live in the Oro Valley. His office is in a building next to the Fire Station.

We initially thought Thumbtack would help our online business. But we learned that months previous to our signing up, they sent a memo to all massage therapists that they would no longer support massage therapists. So we had to do a chargeback on our credit card against them, and thought that was it. But no! Thumbtack refuses to stop sending us leads which give false hope to their customers that we will answer. We can't even log in to get them to listen to us. We already had them try to charge us again. But we had canceled the credit card number when we did the chargeback. We make calls and send emails and they ignore us. So, we just delete all leads. There is no way to contact the customer. We don't have a log in unless we want to pay Thumbtack again. Thumbtack made a deal with Soothe (which is just a platform that never even meets their own massage therapists), and doesn't answer the phone themselves. So, now there are two companies you cannot reach. Thumbtack and Soothe. Both deserve a negative 1. A one star is more than either deserves.
Do not get involved with Thumbtack. Don't request services because they treat their vendors so badly and ineffectually. Worthless.
Miost bogus crap ever sell multiple leads from $50 to $150 and NEVER verify they are even legit. Then refuse to refund you when "lead" never answers back. Thieves just thieves
Do not use Thumbtack! The customer support is TERRIBLE. Absolute worst. Stay away! They insist that they have a team with NO phone numbers and NO emails and cannot be contacted.
I have used Thumbtack for years but the last 12 months things have changed for the worst. I have evidence that they are selling fake leads and charging Contractors for services they do not provide.
Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. It's important to us to obsess about answering our customers and professionals questions and concerns within a timely manner. We are a real company that can always be improving. You can read more about our company in reputable sources such as Forbes and the New York Times. Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
Answer: We want to make sure you get the most out of our site and see a return on the investment you've made with us. Please give us a call at (800) 948-2034 when you have time so we can go over your concerns with us.
