Bought a sale they had right after Thanksgiving. The sale allowed me to get 3 of my VHS tapes turned into DVD's. I received the final product in mid February, and all the DVD's had tracking problems that the VHS tapes did not. Went back and forth a little bit with customer service and they gave me a refund. Overall, I waited almost 3 months and ended up right back where I started. They also use Fedex Smart Post which adds on another week basically because of how slow it is (2-3 days added each way). Very disappointed with my experience overall and will never try them again.
Also, be wary of their advertising. I bought this because in big lettering they said that the legacybox would be received by Christmas. This means that you will get the initial box to put your tapes in and send them by Christmas. Everything about this company is slimy - their marketing included.
Update: Be wary of really good reviews. Seems they come in bunches and they seem very fake.
I would give them 0 stars if it was an option. Not only did it take forever to get my videos back, they lost one and can't find it. Now I have no DVD or video of the memory from 30 years ago. Oh and to throw sand in the wound, they will not refund my money for the list DVD. I've never had such a bad experience with a company. Customer service is awful. Unfortunately I trusted some of my most precious belongings to them and now I will never see it again.
Anyone looking for a good company, try Yes Video. Much better quality and always available for help!
The process took 6 weeks. When I FINALLY got the digital copy, it had over an hour of blank space at the end. I sent an email to their customer service to see if they would remedy the problem and received a curt response back with no effort to rectify the problem. There are plenty of other sites that do the same thing. I will not be using Southtree.com in the future and would recommend against anyone else doing so.
1. Took several months to receive the DVDs to 3 VHS takes. Had to call and email multiple to be eventually "moved up the que."
2. When our order finally came - the original VHS tapes were not returned and the instead of receiving the 3 copies we ordered - only one was sent.
3. after several attempts to contact them - I eventually got someone to tell me they would review the order if I sent the DVDs back at my own expense - no thanks - not waiting another 6 months for the only copy I have of these left to be reviewed.
Total joke. Groupon buyers beware.
Southtree your fancy new website doesn't make up for your terrible follow thru on orders and customer service.
I took advantage of a deal I found for Southtree on Facebook. I sent in 10 tapes and was kept informed on each step of the process. The turnaround time was excellent. It was really great being able to see these old video but a couple had some damage that was disappointing. 4 stars is because one of my videos was labeled as a school show but only had about 45 seconds of something totally different. I wish I could have replaced that one or gotten a credit back. Seriously, it was obviously a mistake, but all mine I guess.
I had some old audio tapes on reels that I sent to Southtree for digitizing. I received regular communications from Southtree on the project progress. What I thought would take a week or so took several weeks. That's the only complaint I have, otherwise the service did what was expected and I'm pleased.
Southtree has great marketing, with frequent promotions, but, it ends up costing more that anticipated and it takes longer than advertised and Southtree did not digitize all items giving a lame excuse for not digitizing slide negatives. I would not use Southtree again.
The quality was excellent, but I am disappointed that my instructions were not followed. I was told if I grouped my slides and labeled them and included instructions that my photos would be organized into folders on the thumb drive sent back. With 372 slides over a ten year period I spent a lot of time grouping them by date so when they came back I would know what year they were taken. The photos were not grouped or named in anyway that would tell me their date. I was disappointed that I was told this could happen and I spent the time organizing them and it didn't happen.
My order also took 71 days from arrival at the lab to receipt of the thumb drive in the mail. Processing time was less than 2 days so most of the wait was queue time. So if you're in a hurry this may not be the best company.
A friend of mine recommended this company, and I have been wanting to transfer my VHS tapes for quite a while, but every site was very expensive. She told me Southtree was a good deal, and it was. The % off was nice, and although it was a little pricey for me, I still thought the price was better than other places. I got my first order, and was very pleased with the quality. The tapes are 30 years old, so they had some wear and tear, but overall good quality. There were 2 tapes that were not transferred, and I called and they sent me the label to return them, and they are doing them for me no extra charge. I haven't received my second order yet, but I am sure it will be fine. It was very good to see my family members that are gone now, and also my children when they were little. I am expecting my second order this week. If I have an issue with this order I will tell them. But it was a positive experience. 4 stars because I had to send back 2 tapes.
Got a thumb drive of 15 VHS tapes back much quicker than expected. That was great. The quality wasn't great but I'm sure that had more to do with the 25-30 year old tapes. It would have been nice if someone would have contacted me to see if I really wanted old television shows mixed in with children's birthdays and Christmas'. They clearly were not intended to be included but we had a few miss marked tapes.
The quality of the digital transfer of my cassette tapes was very good. The technicians, however, paid no attention to the holders in which the tapes were originally. I had to spend 45 minutes putting the tapes back in their original cases. That kind of sloppiness was disappointing.
I numbered my 10 video cassettes as directed and went on the website and titled each of the tapes that I sent in, by number.
When I received my thumb drive, some of the files were in a different order than I had numbered them with the stickers. None of the files were labeled as I had done on the web site. In addition, some of the videos were divided onto different files. The 2nd half of one was inset between two of the videos that were on a separate cassette. The transitions between the videos were very choppy with static. I'm sure that is how my cassettes were filmed, but no effort to clean the transitions up was attempted. I guess it wasn't advertised either, but all in all I wasn't pleased with the product.

This was pretty easy to order. One tip--keep the box you get originally. You can ship your legacy box back to them in it. I am so happy with the CD and thumb drive I received. I had around 28 reels to send in. It was so nice to watch old memories and see people who have passed. I know some places add music but Southtree does not. I liked not having music because we were commenting as we watched our old home movies from the 70's. What a great way to keep memories and make gifts for people. It took quite a while to get my items back but I did send a LOT in and they arrived back to me in good condition. I will send more movies and slides in as I find them.
Have had over 50 vcr tapes that I was going to convert myself and I came upon Southtree. What a find. Quick service. Great identification on conversions. Excellent quality. Will be sending my 8 mm next.
Very pleased with their service! Received continual updates (i. E. "We received your package", "We've bar coded your items", "Your items are in our production cue", etc. My transfer from audio tape to cd was handled professionally and completed very well.
We so enjoyed sharing these past experiences with our family and friends. We had forgotten about some of the small but powerful moments from over 30 years ago. We're searching for more old tapes to send in.
These guys are fantastic communicators. Got emails all along the way to keep me posted as they worked through my stuff so I always knew what was going on. Even left me a sweet hand-written note in the box. I've never seen a company do that. Delivered perfectly on time, the video files were digitized wonderfully. I'll absolutely use these guys again. I had no idea what was on some of my old tapes — it was such a shocking surprise to see a good friend who had suddenly and tragically passed away a few years ago. We were just kids playing... I sat and cried for an hour watching those old videos. It was such a beautiful moment. These guys and the service they do rocks!
I had worries about sending irreplaceable family memories off to strangers. Through four separate orders, with a total of over six hundred individual images, my experience with Southtree was excellent. The staff that I dealt with acted friendly and professionally at every contact. I would recommend Southtree without reservation to anyone. If you think this review sounds too good to be true, I don't exaggerate.
While the eventual product seems to be high quality, it took way too long. Three times what was advertised. One should never over-promise and under deliver.
The fact that they continued to send e-mails trying to drum-up more business just made it worse.
