The company has garnered a predominantly negative reputation, with numerous customers expressing frustration over inadequate customer service and unresolved refund issues. Common complaints include misleading pricing, unexpected charges at pickup, and a lack of accountability when problems arise. Many reviewers felt deceived by promotions that did not translate into actual benefits, leading to perceptions of false advertising. While there are occasional mentions of successful rentals, the overall sentiment indicates a significant distrust in the company's practices, suggesting a pressing need for improved transparency and responsiveness to customer concerns.

I booked a rental car through Rentalcars.com and upon arriving at the airport I realized there was a double booking. Rentalcars.com does not have a phone number on their website so I immediately informed the agent at Europcar about the double booking and to cancel my reservation. Rentalcars.com still charged me the FULL 5 week rental fee! Not very happy with Am Ex either as they obviously backed up the company from which they make more income than me. I will be happy to provide documentation - booking reference *******
This website listed a low price rental to lure in customers. When I arrived for pickup the company asked me for an additional insurance charge that would have cost twice as much as the rental, even though we already had insurance. We canceled the rental and were refused a refund by Rentalcars.com. Stay away!
I am very dissatisfied with this company, and urge you to never engage with their services. I happened to pay the rental twice (by inadvertently pressing the pay button twice) and only after multiple strong messages got a refund. Then, due to COVID I had to cancel my trip and car reservation within the timeframe limit for doing ao, and they NEVER as of today (the trip was planned in August 2021), refunded me despite my numerous messages, and their silly answers acknowledging that the refund would be done. Again, I strongly urge you to avoid this company.
Terrible company especially their full insurance as it is not full when you get to Spain. I was expected their to pay a further €50 so cancelled the booking immediately but Rentalcars refused to pay me back apart from a part refund of insurance premium.
I made a booking via rentalcars.com (ref: *******), paid £411.75 (including insurance cover) and was to pick the car up from Sixt car hire on Deltic Avenue Milton Keynes on 27/12/21. Unfortunately Sixt was having an IT issue and couldn't complete my rental, but they assured me they will let rentalcars.com know the cancellation wasn't my fault. I also called rentalcars.com to inform them that same day, and they put me on hold while they confirmed my explanation with Sixt. The assured me that Sixt confirmed my story, so my request for refund will be processed. Not receiving any refund after day 4, I called and this time they changed the story, insisting they can only refund my insurance cover fee of £64.82. I was furious and said they cannot keep my money. They then sent me an email confirming they will keep £346.93 as cancellation fee. I called and sent several emails, even obtained an email from Sixt confirming the cancellation wasn't my fault, which I forwarded to them. Almost a month since I advised them Sixt wasn't able to process my rental or give me any car, rentalcars.com refuses to pay me back the £346.93 balance. I will now be taking the matter to the county court, with the conviction the court will order the refund of my money, plus costs. Rentalcars.com cannot be trusted. They have zero customer service and instead are waiting for any opportunity to rip-off their customers. They don't deserve a rating of 1.
I was NOT shown the full cost of the purchase, so was under the impression the full rental amount with insurance would be R2995. But, I was unexpectedly charged R5000. I was shocked because this is only shown after payment is taken off your account. I trusted the company because it appears on HIPPO.COM. What the F'n F***?
I booked a car through RentalCars.com for a vacation with my family. When I arrived at the rental car counter, my car was given away, which was annoying, but they had another car available. Then when I went to check out they doubled the price of the rental with "required" taxes which were over $40/day. I called the RentalCars.com support number and they were less than helpful continuing to tell me that because I was a bit late, they couldn't help.
The issue here is that the rental car company they were working with upcharged huge fraudulent fees and taxes. The thing is, I spent the time calling other rental car places on the same block and none of them had these required fees and those fees weren't on the RentalCars.com quote page or I would never have booked. When I wrote for support they again started with talking about the pickup time. This had NOTHING to do with car types or availability and 100% to do with the fact that it was cheaper for me to book with another car rental place down the street then just paying for the scam upcharge I was being asked to pay.
This site is useless, it's a scam, they partner with scammers and they don't protect the customer. DO NOT USE this company! Save yourself the time and money and use a company that actually does due diligence on their vendors.
I used rentalcars.com to book a reservation at Thrifty in Newark, NJ airport. When I got there, Thrifty told me the reservation had been cancelled. It was at night on Christmas Eve, I was there with my family, I couldn't reach rentalcars.com over the phone, so I rented a car somewhere else and left. It has since been impossible to get rentalcars.com to acknowledge what happened and return the money I paid for the voucher (over $600!). The operators on the phone just make up stories, they say I was late for the pickup (which was not the issue at all, or Thrifty would have mentioned it) and therefore they will just pocket my money. I opened a "case" online and I got another round of BS. So: they pocketed my $600 and there's nobody I can talk to. Stay away from them!
I opened a case through my credit card for part of my money, hopefully I get some back there.
We have used rentalcars.com on a number of occasions. However, on this last occasion, they did not provide us with full and transparent information. Consequently, when we arrived in Spain it cost us an ADDITIONAL £500 to rent a car. Since returning almost 3 months ago, rentalcars.com management have refused to answer our numerous e-mails. They will TAKE your MONEY, but will not look after you as a customer when they have been negligent. DO NOT USE rental.cars.com. I was once an advocate, I am appalled now by their behaviour.
Worst custumer service ever. Nobody cares about resolving anything. Paid for a rental almost 2000 dollar when i got to the airport they cancelled the reservation. After 2 hours on the phone they told me i had to wait until the last day of the rental date to file a claim. I filed the claim and they denied it. They practically stoled 2 grand from me! Telling i did not pick up the car! When i was right there at the rental counter! Total Scam!
I had a reservation that was cancelled so the nice folks at National suggested I use Rentalcars.com.
It was the worst mistake I've made. I was charged $488,75 for two days for a Hyundai which I drove for less than. 30 miles. The total came out to over $500 for two days. This company is a scam. Stay away from them!
Apparently Booking.com sublets their vehicle rentals to Rentalcars.com in the United Kingdom (not in USA).
I would give a negative rating if allowed. Proper Customer Service is simply non existent. Additional charges on back end of 71.00 for a 3 day rental.
There s a high probability you will be frustrated and unsatisfied if you book vehicle rentals through rental cars.com or booking.com.
MY OPINION - RUN AWAY FAST
I have booked a car from Avis Thailand through their portal (rentalcars.com). I was given a below standard car for the duration of my rental. The undercarriage was totally destroyed and had been fixed with cable ties (car was in an accident previously and they had not informed me at pick up). Of course it broke down again while I was driving half way through my trip. Ended up not being able to use the car for 3 days, until I find a way to fix it myself, being in the middle of the Thailand countryside, 1h drive from the nearest town with a garage. I have informed Rentalcars.com of the incident, they did not seem to concerned about it and told me to open a claim after I return the car. I opened a claim on their website after returning the car, asking for compensation, they closed it after 4 hours, "thanking me for the feedbacks and for helping them improve their service". F... ng joke! I have opened back the claim, ever since no one replies to my messages, no one give a damn about the case. Their customer service is inexistant. If all goes OK during the rental, good for you. If not, just now they will not give a damn about you as soon as they take your money. Better think twice before renting a car through third-party agents like them. They absolutely do not care about customer service. Just there to take the money and cash in their commission with the rental companies. For the rest, you can just get lost...
Run away as far as you can from this company, presumably part of booking.com group...
Booked a car. Company had told me after I paid them that I was unable to pick the car up because I am a resident of the state in which I had requested it. They informed me they were unable to issue me a refund on my transaction time and I would be forced to wait till my drop off time a week later to submit a claim. Customer service was useless and claimed they had no way to help resolve the situation. Awful company. Just rent from someone else.
RentalCars.com obtained in full my advance car rent for a weeks hire of an Alamo car at Fiumincino. Unexpectedly a flight London to Rome was cancelled. The following day I presented myself to the Alamo desk at FCO to be told not presenting myself the previous day invalidated the entire RentalCar contract for the seven days. Alamo who charged me again for another vehicle was free to rent that original car to another customer. So both Alamo and their agent RentalCar made profits by Not Providing a service. Obtaining a rebate from the Booking.com website has proven both extremely ( intentionally) difficult if not impossible. This is a service to avoid.
Hello everyone
After such an experience i was wondering that i must share this so that a maximum of people is aware.
I booked a car for 3 weeks and when i went to the desk to get the keys, the agent refused all my credit cards including a business card that i have always used for deposit purpose. He said in our conditions we accept only credit but not debit cards. I asked him then to cancel and he said ok, it is cancelled.
I needed to move asap because i had an appointment so i went to another company and took another car.
Two days later i found out that the booking was still ongoind on rentalcars and When i contacted them, they said they didn't receive any cancellation and they cannot do anything… i asked them to cancel the booking, take cancellation fees and refund me the rest they said sorry there is nothing we can do!
I tried multiple calls and emailed different services but they still say the same thing.
This is really pathetic, Rentalcars are not capable of helping even a loyal customer who has been using their services for years.
From now on i will use renalcars only as a comparator and then book directly from rental companies.
If you buy their insurance, the car rental company will treat you as if you have no insurance, and will then block/take in the case of car rental company, Centauro, 1200Euros until you return the car damage free. Rental cars.com makes 100 times more money on selling car insurance then they do on the referral, so they are super motivated to scare you into buying it. This is exactly how the car rental company make their money as well, so you should just buy the insurance at the checkout counter of the rental company, and at least have it be respected.
Complete bait and switch going on with this company. They make it look like you are getting a great price but really all they are doing is charging you extra and then the actual rental company is going to jab you a huge amount on top of what you already paid. THERE IS NO DEAL HERE. Looked like I was getting my car for 394. But then when I returned the car I was charged 200+ more. No where in the agreement with rentalcars.com does it give you a cost breakdown, nor does the fine print tell you that you are going to pay all taxes and fees outside of the price they gave you. Run away and go directly to the source. Might seem like you are paying more- but I can promise you that you are not. You will pay the price later using this site.
DO NOT USE This site to rent a car, they overcharge, offer fake insurance. Require a $17K usd deposit from car rental company even tho they ensured you their insurance was the best! They send you emails saying don't get scammed by the local rental agency, even though Rentalcars.com says in their paperwork they send you that the rental company needs to collect a $17,000 deposit. Worst experience ever!
I have a very bad experience with this rentalcars. I booked a car for one week and I don't have international driver license. When I came to pick up they didn't get me the car. Okay, it's okay, BUUUT! They charged me all the amount! For a week! I have no refund at all…
Answer: Good luck with that one, I'm in the same boat, I'm going to pass my situation on to the travel doctor at the Sunday Times.
