I purchased an item and the seller waited his allotted 3 days to ship before cancelling the action. I was not given a chance to rate the seller. Then I find out if you dont rate the seller it auto rates them w 5 stars. Since i cannot rate the seller the app gets the bad rating.

If I could give a review of 0, I would! I purchased a product from this website and received the item in extremely poor condition. It was a Christmas present for my son. I immediately wrapped the box when I received it and when my son opened the box the item had been used and was sticky. This was sold as a collectible not a toy. I contacted customer service several times with no resolution, at least to my satisfaction. I am stuck with a $90 "toy". Mercari didn't even attempt to back the item sold on their website. I am thoroughly disgusted that there was not attempt to help me out and obtain the item I actually purchased.
Honestly, I see all the negative reviews... And while I can understand some complaints, a lot of them seem like people who just got angry over not getting away with something.
I've been a member of Mercari since 2018 as a buyer. I recently started selling in November 2020, and in the past 4 months, I've made almost $400. I've made a couple mistakes, one on shipping, but I really haven't had any complaints. I have over 40 5 star reviews as a seller (and 1 4 star review, where the buyer states what a rare item I sold him, and how lucky he was to find it but still gave me 4 stars?) And all 5 stars as a buyer.
I've had some weird cancellations as a buyer, one attempted (and denied) return for a pair of boots that the buyer had said she loved and then tried to return anyway...
Some of the people can suck, but without Mercari I'd have never been able to start selling online. I was so intimidated for so long over fees and shipping, I had no idea where to begin. But I've been pretty successful over Mercari. I'm grateful. Their customer service even commented on mine, saying my outstanding customer service was reflected in my superb ratings (their words, not mine)
It's really helped me supplement my income, which we all know right now is beyond critical...
Plus, the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment I get with every sale is something I truly am grateful for.
They customer service can be a little confused at times, but I think they try their best. I have more complaints about the postal service than mercari, honestly.
And there are some who will scam you, I've had a small amount of experiences in that area, but I try to take it as a learning experience, and a chance to develop my grace.
I am truly grateful for this platform, it's been paramount in so much of my forward progress during this stressful time, and really gives me something to look forward to, be ambitious about, and be excited for.
If you learn from your mistakes, pay attention to the guidelines, and read reviews from buyers and sellers before doing business, you can do pretty well with this app. That's my 2 cents. :)
Mercari tells me not to rate the seller who lied about the phone which was was locked and the seller stated it was unlocked. If I rated the seller, Mercari told me I would not receive a refund so I am rating Mercari. I returned the item but did not receive a refund so the battle goes to the credit card company. Mercari is really a terrible website. I have over 17 years of experience selling on eBay and Mercari is the worst site to try to sell or buy an item.
I had my account deleted after making a purchase with a girl and apparently me asking her name for shipping purposes was the reason my account was deleted, and banned from mercari. Not only did I contact them and get no response, but I never got a valid explanation or warning about my account being possibly deleted. I refuse to use this app any longer, I was a verified customer for 4 years, and I will never recommend this app again. Thanks a lot mercari, you lost a customer. Ridiculous.
This rating game that has taken over American business has gotten out of control. If the money is good that should be enough for Pete's sake. Ebay's rating game is at least more sophisticated for the users and you can separate item description from communication, shipping, etc. Recently, a seller shipped quickly but didn't respond to my message so I flat out don't want to rate them... guess that's what auto-rate is for. Another purchase I rated too soon and regret over-rating the seller because he wasn't gracious at the end.
The sole purpose for writing my review was boost Mercari's rates up because I do have a different experience with Mercari staff aka Team Mercari than most of the reviews. You do have to be patient for a reply, but they will email you back with your concern, and they certainly have been equitable with me. Their system generated emails are a little ugly and cold-looking but their staff seems quite helpful & reasonable always looking to resolve issues. Of course I try to provide detailed information so they are not trying to figure out my issue. Maybe this can help some other buyers interested in doing business with Mercari:}
I'm revising this review after many many more orders. Dealing with "the system" especially at Mercari is proving to be be impossible. Recently I purchased a VHS player that one of the main features did not work. The seller was getting angrier and then his message was deleted by an admin. I asked Mercari to step in an help with the refund as I did not want to deal directly with this nasty seller. I wanted Mercari credit at least for the defective item/seller and am hoping for equity with this purchase. I was thinking of doing a claim on PayPal but have since decided it's not worth the time. I think Team Mercari is as good as whoever you happen to get. I think they hide behind those emails but in fairness most of the time have been professional. I recommend paying with PayPal though they do safeguard your #'s impeccably. Having had my debit card hacked other major websites, I have never had my card hacked on Mercari and the advantage of using card is that you can make offers to sellers with a card but not with PayPal. However, paying with PayPal will give you back-up in case you cannot reach a response with Team Mercari and you do have an issue. They definitely have a lot of cool items, and I think if their customer service becomes more interactive and more professional like their competitors this will be a win-win for everyone who love Mercari. If a seller does not ship an item to a seller, the seller can not rate the buyer. Plus: The buyer has to wait at least a week for Mercari customer service to issue a refund. There is no mark against the seller.
I saw a Xbox One for $200, added it to the cart. When I clicked add to cart, a message appeared stating that the seller has a high cancellation rate. I decided to go through the checkout process, and when I was about to click the final payment submission, the price had gone up to $300. Luckily I noticed and did not complete the transaction. This seller obviously lists for low prices, and then either changes the price after you add it, or cancels the sale if she doesn't catch it in time. Sellers like this should be banned.

My bank denied my credit card because it does not consider Mercari to be a trusted vendor. In addition, the total charge for that order, including shipping, turned out to be almost double that of the list price. Perhaps MERCARI though I might not notice? Bottom line: If Suntrust thinks the site is unsafe, I think the site is unsafe.
I bought several items with no problem. Then came the ring that was described and sold as 925 sterling silver. After much back and forth with the seller who had definitely lied (it was not stamped and, more importantly, copper was showing thru after one day of wearing it), I followed rigorous company return procedure: minimum of 6 photos of item from every angle, photo of original packaging and photo of original shipping label. (I was relieved I had kept it all since trash day was the day before.) I was emailed a return shipping label and the message said I had one week to get the item sent. Good because my printer being out of ink I needed to hustle to find a place to print it. No easy feat, esp during covid. I managed to get it in the mail just in time and as shipping is especially slow this winter due to higher postal demands (Covid), waited patiently for my refund. Now, looking for help I find it stated that items have to be scanned by the return shipper within 3 days from receiving the return label email. What happened to the promised 1 week? It gets worse because I now find out (thru additional hunting; customer service no where to be found) that not only did I not receive my refund
But Im screwed because my purchase was suddenly marked "completed" by Mercari only 3 days after my email where my return was authorized and return label given. "Completed", meaning I can no longer contact the seller who has the ring back but never refunded me nor can I leave any review for the seller. Note: My review could not be left earlier either as it would have nullified any choice to return. (They do warn you of this. So obviously no one wants to do That!) This is how the company is very underhanded. So there are likely many sellers who have false good ratings due to this catch of not being able to review anything with a problem. So not only are the ratings you use to choose a "good"seller skewed, but if you do have an issue your purchase likely will time out before youre able to even leave a negative review warning others.
I hope Im explaining this well. I mean to say if you have a bad item you wont be able to do anything about it, so you need to be a highly lucky person. This off-site review is all I can do to warn anyone. (I'll now look for any additional non-biased sites I can leave reviews on because I sure wish I had seen some ahead of time.)
Mercari recently raised their fees and lower their standards! Customer Service is basically non-existent. I had a seller BishopStore that sold me 2 items with the old bait and switch tactic and both the seller and Mercari will not take action! I failed to look at the reviews of this seller but found that they send out products to buyers all the time that are completely different than what they ordered! Plus most of them are cheap items that don't even work. This is fraud! Mercari has collected their fees, the seller scammed another buyer so I'm stuck filing a claim with PayPal.
I have tried REPEATEDLY to access the Mercari website from my PC and after re-setting my Password 2Xs, I was still unable to access their site. When asked WHY this was so... I received NO response. Evidently, Mercari believes that EVERYONE wants to access their site from a mobile device. NOPE! Here's the deal... I DON'T WANT TO USE MY PHONE TO ACCESS THEIR SITE, I WANT TO USE MY PC.
A buyer bought an item from me and then had buyers remorse so they reported to mercari that it was not authentic without checking with me or discussing it with me they allowed the buyer to return it it was a very simple case of buyer's remorse a lady bought it for her husband and he was pissed because she paid as much as she did for it mercari is a bunch of idiots! Mercari has turned into a disaster for sellers. They added additional seller fees. Unlike several other apps they haven't figured out how to negotiate rates for shipping. I sold an item and when I weighted prior to listing then USPS said it was over a bit. They charged me but instead of charging me what USPS would have they rounded up to the nearest pound. Mercari allows you to pick a label by pounds and ounces. I took the same Amazon box to the post office and asked them with the weight mercari claims my package was and the rep stated it was 8.50 to ship but mercari insisted it was rounded up. Which means they are over charging everyone because they are only basing shipping in pounds.
Not only is their shipping ridiculous their customer service is equally not as helpful. Just stay away from them

I recently purchased something from a seller, and it arrived missing one of the pieces. I contacted the seller and let her know and she apologized and said she'd send a spare part in the mail. Well, she never did. And the transaction apparently already closed out.
So when I contacted Mercari support regarding the issue they offered zero help. I explained I was giving the seller a chance to make it right before blasting them with a negative review. And they basically told me to kick rocks. Wow cool. So now I can't have a refund for an item that was falsely advertised as having all pieces, and I can't even contact the seller anymore or write negative feedback for them?
If they are not going to have proper protocols in place to truly protect buyers, I won't be shopping here again.
