I used my NY Drivers License for enrolling in ID.me for IRS.gov. Started on my PC, then provided my mobile number and received the link on my mobile as SMS, followed the prompts, provided the snapshots requested for my drivers license (had to take them twice), then enabled the camera for a selfie against a white background (no glasses, that was tricky for me, couldn't see the instructions),, waited a few seconds for approval, went back to my PC to confirm information presented to me, and completed the whole process, from beginning to end, in about 5 min.

IRS required an online verification of my tax return and my identity in order to send me a refund from 2022 returns. I was prepared for an hour of technology torture. But no, I was really surprised. For identity verification, the ID.me website was simple, clear, quick, and appeared really secure. It was seamlessly integrated with the IRS website I started on. Every complex financial or security process should be so simple and effective. Bravo.
My phone is a cheapie. I don't take many pictures. 12 per year. I am old and my hands are shaky. I tried 6 times with my phone. Blurry pictures. Scanning does not work since the picture must be taken with a phone. On my 7th try I used my husband's Samsung S9. Put your own cellphone # in wherever it asks but before you take the picture put in the cellphone # of the better phone and take the picture. Make sure to erase the better cellphone # and put in your own cellphone after you have uploaded the pix but before you leave the screen by pushing the next button. I was using an 8.1 computer with a webcam. You can feel the webcam at the center of the top edge of your open laptop if you have never used it before. Somewhere along the line I switched from self-service to video chat with agent. If my camera only produced blurry pix of the id I didn't think I would have any luck with a selfie. What's 15 min when I had already spent 3 hrs printing IRS info. Be sure to read how to register for an IRS online account and how to verify with a Video chat agent.
After I uploaded and tapped join a video chat it took less than 5 mins. Good luck and remember persistence pays.

It was easy enough I'd and me needs to explain why do you need it, is it a one time verification? Do the a company websites use it? An explanation is necessary because your signing on to mutual sites at the same time.
It was a quick and easy process. All of the questions were self-explanatory and the site is done well.
Be prepared to take picture of front and back of document to be used for identification and a selfie to be added to the application by downloading. Make sure you add your password for access to your Dashlane or iCloud Keychain.
