It was a good experience considering it is my first time using ID.me. I still have not received any benefits but I know it would help me tremendously when I receive them.
Imagine having someone ask for your ID at a liqueur store. No, not some underpaid, disgruntled employee, maybe a partially trained baboon would be a better analogy.
I have a brand new phone with a good camera. I tried half a dozen times to upload my drivers license. Black background, white background, brightly lit room, darker room. Every time: "Sorry it didn't work, try again." Then tried the same thing with passport. Same result. Then tried the live selfie function. In three different rooms in my home, against different walls. Shades open, shades closed. "We're sorry, it didn't work, try again."
It took easily two hours of frustrating attempts over two days before I used a live representative, who was very nice, and it all worked. But the automated (tech) portion of the process was a dumpster fire, in a flooded river, falling off a waterfall.
You will need to complete a few steps. But, in the long run this process seems to work. Not only for you and your information but, for others as well.

Just uploading using your passport was torture. We tried multiple time and gave up. I switched to driver's license and after a few tries that took so then they wanted a video selfie(WHY). Just be aware that this seems like a scam and I wouldn't be surprised if your info and video is floating in another country.
