ONE OF THE WORST COMPANIES WE'VE HAD TO DEAL WITH!

Our reno company signed up with HomeStars services 2 years ago. When we signed up, they were extremely quick in taking our money. Fast forward 2 years later when we called in to cancel our subscription, HomeStars has been very unprofessional. We called in 3 months ago to cancel, and over and over again, we keep getting the same BS from their side. We literally spoke to a dozen representatives and managers, promising they would be taking care of the matter, but after 3 months, they are still charging our company credit card.

Today we had to resort to calling the VISA dispute department to file a case. It is beyond my hands now so we'll have to wait and see what happens from here.

ATTENTION TO THE PUBLIC: PLEASE BECAREFUL USING HOMESTARS AS A SERVICE. WE DON'T WANT THE SAME THING TO HAPPEN TO OTHERS OUT THERE.

---------------------------------
UPDATE:
HomeStars refunded the latest payment they charged us for, after VISA Dispute Department got in touch with them.

Horrible experience
August 25, 2015

My husband always uses homesteads to find contractors. We were redoing our backyard interlocking and the front of our house. He found GTA landscaping located in Toronto who subcontracted a company by the name if Strong Base interlocking and construction. The guy came out and looked at the work to be done and gave us a estimate. Where do I begin. We first gave him a deposit of $200 this was in may, he said he would start in June. With all the wet weather we had we understood. So he came at the end of July to start. We waited a long time. He would make excuses when he didn't show up, it's too, family issues etc... Then came to putting the interlock, we had existing interlock and he said he would get the same interlock. Not consulting with us first he got the wrong stone and started laying it down. My husband cones home and noticed right away, he said he was 150% sure it was the right stone. My husband argued back and forth, hr finally said our stone was discontinued, my husband said why he wasn't straight with us. My husband called 4 different companies and finally found one that still had it in stock. My husband called him and told him. He called his supplier to confirm and he did. He asked me what I wanted to do I said rip it all out and get the right stone. He wasn't happy and so the headache started. He told us that we would have to wait 4 weeks because he had other jobs to do. Is that professional? No! Do I called GTA landscaping and they contacted him and he said he would be there the following week on the Monday. Monday came and went to show, more excuses. He promised so may thing to us that he would do and never did. Finally my husband kept calling until he came to finish. We paid him and he said that he would be back to pick up materials that had to be disposed until now he hasn't showed up to pick it up. More excuses. I don't recommend this company at all. They promise so much and don't follow through. I'm tired of dealing with scum.

Excellent Company
April 16, 2016

I would like to recommend Knox Insulation and Roofing and acknowledge the professionalism of service and quality work. I just had my condo ceiling sound proofed with cellulose insulation. It took approximately 4 hours and a lot of insulation blown into my ceilings. I have a 829 Square foot condo that I purchased in November. The unit above me has been vacant since I moved in 4 months ago and finally sold. I was so upset when they showed it about how much I could hear every friggin thing they did. The footsteps and general noise from above is not acceptable for a 8 year old building. I knew it would be a nightmare once someone moved in. I would either have to leave or rent it out and live somewhere else. I research on line about sound proofing ceilings and sourced Knox. I called and left a message. I very quickly had a response from Kyle. After speaking to him and my knowledge of this sound proofing I booked the instal for the next week. When they arrived, they quickly assessed my ceilings and did a sample hole. Kyle was concerned that they might not be able to do the work due to the shawdy workmanship of the builder and was not going to do it if he could not give me the quality of sound proofing I desired. He was willing to walk away rather then try to do the work incorrectly. Kyle did a couple more check holes and tested to see if the blowing of cellulose would work. It did and it was keep going to finish the job. The two person team worked non stop for 4 hours and my ceiling is now stuffed. I cannot commend yet on how much this has improved until the people above me move in which will be soon. If I get 50% improvement then I am already keeping my sanity. Thank you so much for a great job and a great price and service excellence. I completely recommend your product and service. I may end up having you come back at a later date to do my inside wall to the hall as it is totally not sound proofed either. Thanks again Nancy Carnegie - Barrie, Ontario

THE BIGGEST SCAM EVER
December 6, 2021

I was approached by a sales agent ( Daniel Carreira) from HomeStars not long ago.
He offered us so my valuable options (at that time) for us to register with their programs for contractors offering services for home renovation projects.
We were no positive in moving forward since the terms and conditions where not what we were looking for to get into at that time, we also saw no value at all in the offer. Daniel (Dan) continue calling and still we were absolutely negative in getting into the program.
Daniel used the Management strategy, he put his "Manager" in the speaker ( Tammy Newman). Tammy was aggressive and more recurring into her speech to the point to force me to make decisions at that time.
Even though we were totally against the offer she put on the table for us, Tammy focus was in causing fear threatening us in going to our competitors to offer same things she was offering us as exclusive. She offered a continue source of leads, as far as her statistics they were losing business since they didn't have a contractor like us in the local area so they can drain these leads.
Making all this long story shorter the bottom line is that we made the decision to move forward with them in a testing trial to see how it could go.
After two months we have received only one lead that concluded in NO BUSINESS making this trial a failure trial. No matter what they can do, HomeStar is no willing to pull the necessary traffic in their platform so they can supply the necessary amount of business or leads so we can back up the investment with them.
At this time we have decided to cancel this agreement, but listen to this, listen, AT THIS TIME AND AFTER TWO WEEKS NON CALL, EMAIL, WEBSITE CONTACT FORM OR ANY FORM OF CONTACT HAS BEEN RESPONDED so far. It looks like that these people are simply scammer ghosts that only allow one way contact for sales (outbound calls) and still they keep taking money from your account after you have sent several email asking for cancelling this contract.
NEVER GET IN BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE. DO NOT MAKE SUCH AS MISTAKE.

Buyer beware when using Homestars. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. The credentials contractors provide on HomeStars is NOT 100% ACCURATE. Contractors said to be Better Business Bureau accreddited ARE NOT ALL BBB members. HomeStars also knowingly keeps up contractor posts for companies that are fraudulent. One company in particular has been sued by several national banks and home owners, and has fled. His company website has been removed, his company registration has been revoked and removed, he fled his leased home and took his leased truck. Several people have posted about this individual, and HomeStars has made an effort to REMOVE those posts WARNING OTHERS not to get ripped off by this guy. All of my posts also warning others were removed and I was 'reminded of HomeStars stringent and honest and holier than though guidelines' when posting. They also state confidentiality reasons in preventing users from contacting each other in hopes of coordinating efforts to sue the jerk who ran off with all our money, to PROTECT the 'criminal' err I mean the contractor and other users and their identity. I'm sure they'll come back with a bunch of stuff about how I tried to post my email so the other person could contact me or how I basically said that the guy did not finish our project, never took out a permit, had us unknowingly sign a fake contract, and then took off with an unsafe structure with our money, using some fake excuse about his mother having cancer and dying (while he worked on several other projects and took their money too, before fleeing the city). His mother does not have cancer. But apparently HomeStars wants legal documents (none of their business) and other PROOF of our accusations before even CONSIDERING taking down an advertisement for a company that does not exist, portraying credentials that do not exist, and have deleted all the countless bad reviews that would have lowered his rating to a point where their own guidelines would have forced them to remove his profile. Until his paid subscription runs out HomeStars has no reason to remove a paying contractors ad from their site.

Not reliable.
March 23, 2017

I had reviewed a company on Homestars and the review was negative. Homestar did not post is on their site. I am posting the review that I had posted on Homestars and their response to it. Please read and judge for yourself.

My review of Ottawafurnacefilters.ca posted on Homestars -

"Beware of this company. I ordered furnace filters and made a mistake on the size of the filter. Within 2 hours of placing the order I sent them an email requesting a cancellation but they never responded. Sent 6 more emails after that but no response. Then they delivered the filters which were ordered in error and did not honor their cancellation policy which is detailed on their websites, even though it is very unreasonably worded. As per their cancellation policy if an order is cancelled within 12 hours of placing it they will cut 10-20% from the price to cover their losses incurred in having someone to cancel the order (utter nonsense). But if they had even done that I would have at least received a part of my money spent in error. But they chose to ignore all my emails and sent me the filters anyway which I have no use for. Please stay away from them. They have no address or phone number listed on their website probably for reasons best understood by us now. The address registered here on Home star is also false and is of the Confederation Park in downtown Ottawa. Even the phone number that they have registered with the credit card company and on Homestar does not exist. They are a company BEST AVOIDED. Do not take a risk with them."

Homestars response -

"Hi: homeowner_full_name,

Thanks for your recent review on Ottawa Furnace Filters. Unfortunately your review has been rejected because it doesnt meet our guidelines. Please edit your review so that it focuses only on the work completed. Although you might feel very frustrated with the company right now, try to keep your criticism constructive.

Once you are happy with the new version, click Submit Review at the bottom of the page.

Well take another look at your review and approve it if it meets our guidelines.

Thanks for editing your review.

So please use your own judgment to depend on the reviews posted on Homestars.ca. They only post positive reviews which could be written by the companies friends and relatives but they do not post the negative feedback written by genuine customers like us.

If you believe the reviews on this site, well I have some choice land to sell you in the lovely everglades.

I wrote the following review on Aire Max and his questionable business practices:

Fact: We hired "Max" and his company Max Aire to replace our 20+ year old furnace and A/C.
Fact: Max represented that the unit we purchased (Lennox) came with a 10-year manufacturer's parts warranty.
Fact: We paid more than $5500 for the unit.
Fact: The unit ceased operating well within the warranty period.
Fact: Lennox denied our warranty claim because Max failed to install the correct A-coil (he concealed from us that he did not install a Lennox A-coil but instead installed a lesser part that voided our warranty).
Fact: Max continued to top up our unit with refrigerant to make it functional but denied any responsibility for the failure/leaking of the unit.
Fact: Max blamed us for not "maintaining" the unit, notwithstanding that we had cleaned the unit annually.
Fact: Lennox verified that there was no requirement to carry out any formal maintenance to maintain their warranty. They further confirmed that the warranty was voided solely due to the actions of Max and Max Aire.
Fact: No fewer than two HVAC companies have assessed the a/c unit and determined that the A-coil had prematurely failed.
Fact: One HVAC company advised that Max used pipes that were too small for the size of the a/c condenser unit and this also contributed to the failure of the a/c.
Fact: Max used lines (that carry refrigerant) that were 5/8 diameter. The independent a/c expert advised that the lines were too small and that the size 3/4 diameter should have been used.
Fact: Max has repeatedly engaged in aggressive conduct –often yelling at us when attending at our home.
Fact: Max has made racially insensitive comments while at our home.
Fact: Max contractually provided his personal warranty for labour and 10 years for parts but has failed to live up to his obligations.
Fact: We have given Max many opportunities to make this right be he refused to acknowledge his responsibility.
Fact: We have no option but to seek the assistance of the courts and to let others know about our experience with him.

They rejected this and several other edits for no clear reason. It seems as though if you are a service provider paying homestars, then they will protect your image eventhough they may produce pure junk.

Homestars should really be used as follows: the most rewarded companies should be regarded with the greatest suspicion! Caveat emptor!
