The company exhibits a mixed reputation, with notable strengths in customer satisfaction when it comes to specific contractors and service providers, who are often praised for professionalism and quality work. However, significant concerns arise regarding the lead generation service, with numerous customers expressing frustration over poor-quality leads, lack of refunds for invalid contacts, and overwhelming solicitations. Many reviews indicate a decline in service quality following the merger with Angie's List, leading to a perception of the company as unreliable. Overall, while individual service experiences can be positive, systemic issues with lead handling and customer support remain prevalent.

They take money they shouldn't, takes an hour on the phone to talk to anybody! Canceled service and they still charged my account and then make it impossible to talk to anyone to get it taken care of!
When I signed up with them I was told that they will give a lead to 3 contractors and basically you have to sell yourself or services and wish for the best which I was ok with. I later found out thru customers that they were getting called from 7 to 10 contractors. So what that means is considering they charge each contractor $35 to $100 a lead they are tripling down but the contractor is getting screwed. Never mind the fact if you don't call right away the customer is sick of all the calls so you don't get anywhere with them. Another issue is I was a top rated contractor for 3 years with them had nearly a 5 rating with 90 reviews then came a day I had a wacko customer who had a problem which I fixed and they wanted to arbitrate a refund so they pursued you to use their arbitrator instead of going to court then side with the customer at your expense. I couldn't believe how I was treated when this customer complained... they actually froze my account until I rectified the issue and when I did the customer still proceeded and was awarded all the money. The customer lied and then was told by the arbitrator that if they got estimates for a replacement it would help there case... What the heck... THIS IS A JOKE FROM ALL ASPECTS... As like most other contractors state... most of the people don't hire you anyway because they are looking for the cheapest... sadly you can't leave a google review probably because they pay a lot of money so it can't happen. Hopefully contractors will see it here.
Another issue is... I was asked upon signing up if I had insurance and license... so thru the years I would tell customers that needed other services to use them because they made it sound as tho they vetted the contractors to insure the home owner they received pros and were protected. I later came across a home owner that had a terrible experience and found out that the contractor wasn't insured... so they lied again...
We are spending $5000. 00 a month for leads that are no good. We called and spoke with a manager Eric. He was a complete joke and the would not refund money. This company is a complete and total rip off. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY, they will suck your company dry.
I am a professional business owner in computer services. I am very frustrated with the HomeAdvisor lead system. Many times, I have responded promptly to a lead and either been unable to contact the customer OR the customer was not asking for the correct service. I get charged many times for bad leads which I should not be charged for. HomeAdvisor is very poor at granting credit for bad leads. For these reasons, I will be not be renewing my contract with HomeAdvisor when it comes due again.
If you ever need any work done by a contractor or handy man, DO NOT USE HOME ADVISORS. I scheduled someone to come out and put up holiday lights on the top and gutter edge of my roof. I even spoke to the contractor 3 days ago and told him I have a two story house and want lights along the top of the roof and sides of roof and gutter edge of roof and garage. He did not come prepared with a ladder to complete the job. He acted as if he was scared to climb. I have a two story colonial so its not a huge mansion!
Never deal with this company. They will withdraw all the money from your card, and it will not matter which leads they sent to you, for example, for which you will never get through, but the money will still be withdrawn. Talking with them is useless. They do not want a long-term business relationship, they want fast money. You will only have one option left, ask your bank to return this money. Do not make this mistake.
Never ever! They charge you for nothing and when you call to cancel your damn account they say that you owe lots of money. Donkeys
DO NOT even think about buying. I invested 300 hundred, no sooner I was not ready to take leads. Matt siad he would hold off and help me set up a add. Big joke. They start sending me leads from 90 miles from business and charging large for the leads. The one from my office was not even real and I called no such person. But they charged me 46 dollars. I tryed to get out and sorry they kept my money. TOTAL Rip off. Once they get your money they will not work with you. I have 31 years of business and got cheated big time.
I hired a painter with positive reviews on Home Adviser thinking he had been vetted by other homeowners. The contractor showed up late every day - including for the estimate - tore a large hole in my wall while "repairing" a crack, and then demanded more money because the room was "deceptively" dark with the blinds closed when he gave his estimate. The room has no blinds, most if not all of the curtains were open, and the eight wall sconce lights and an additional lamp were on at the time he gave the estimate. The ultimate paint job was fair at best. He made a mess of my hardwood floor, with whatever substance he used to repair cracks left smeared on the floor and in between the boards. We spent hours on our hands and knees cleaning between the floor boards with thin blades, then steam cleaning and applying several coats of polish to restore the floor to a tolerable condition. I could go on, but the point I want to make is that when I wrote a lengthy negative review of this contractor on Home Adviser it was never published. That explained the contractor's other glowing reviews, which I have to believe were fake, and his 4-5 star rating. Home Adviser obviously doesn't allow negative reviews to be posted. There may be actual good contractors on the web site, but I will never know because there's absolutely no way I would ever trust a contractor from this web site.
Three times I tried to use this site. First time was to repair windows. My phone number was given out to several tele-marketing firm. All contractors that contacted me wanted to upsale windows, not repair a broken one. Second time i requested help building a shed. Again my number was given to telemarketers and i received two contractors that were on the BBB list for poor contractors. The third time I need help with a flagstone. Both contractors did not show. All this site does is gather your personal data to sell to telemarketers,,, BEWARE
I normally don't leave reviews, but I felt the need to help other small business trying to land jobs/customers. I called HomeAdvisor Scam because they tricked into joining their business to the overcharge my bank account. Over $700 in two weeks for work/customers I didn't get.
Here it's how it works:
1. They set your account to get daily leads (as many as you want-the more you get the better for them)
2. They promise you will only pay for the Leads (Customers) you get. That you won't pay for any leads who you couldn't get ahold of, you spoke with and they're weren't ready to hire or they hired some else. (Not TRUE they charge for ALL LEADS you get no matter what)
3. They send the SAME LEADS you get to other group of business (Which means they're ALL paying for the same lead even if that lead wasn't ready to hire)
4. Customer Services is horrible. The guy who tricked me into joining this service (Jason Lusengo) promised I wouldn't be charged for these leads and that I'd get a refund/credit for this. I never did. I waited two weeks-only because he kept responding to my email apologizing for the inconvenience and that they were working on fixing my account. I called today and spoke with a Manager (Danielle Colorado). She told me the opposite that Jason has promised all along. That I pay for ALL leads no matter what. Even if you get ahold of the lead, even if the lead just visited HomeAdvisor for an estimate not ready to hire, I was to pay for ALL which make no sense because not only you are paying for leads/customers you don't have but also other businesses are paying for the exact same leads. Reason I called them a BIG SCAM.
5. This is just unacceptable. I feel like they robbed my bank account. Very Very Disappointed. Please save yourself from this headache. Try other services that won't charge you outrageous fees for advertising. I'm going back to my previous marketing service. I wish I had read all reviews from HomeAdvisor. So Sad I trusted such a discreditable marketing service.
Whether or not these 'customers' are hiring, or just googling the cost of a job, pros are charged rediculous amounts, under the false pretense that this is a 'lead' to a paying job, then, you'll be refused a refund when you reach out to tell HA the client wasnt even looking for your specific service. Do yourself a favor, if you're not a plumber or a carpenter, invest in social media ads, or even just a phonebook. Pretty sure you'll have MUCH better chance of booking jobs and making money, rather than just spending it.
I tried homeadvisor as a contractor for about 2-3 months. My experience was horrible all they want is your money and they will take as much as they can from you, sending leads that customers are just in planning stages and charging around $70-$90 each one. They send the leads to multiple contractors and charge them all the same fee. Waste of time and money. Contractors stay away from home advisor, and customers i recommend researching local places.
Home Advisor is a scam! Try not to work with them. Waste of time and money. Dont even try to be a Homeadvisor pro. When i was talking with them over the phone about joining them as a pro, they told me that they are gonna charge me one time for one year.( but they did not keep their promise and they withdraw money from my account every month and they dont do refund.)for the leads they told me that they are going to charge me if customer accepts the projects but they charge money from your account for each lead doesnt matter you get the job or not. I taught i could make some money by using homeadvisor but i lost money and time Please Please STAY AWAY... DONT EVEN TRY TO WORK WITH THEM AS A CUSTOMER OR A PRO. I CLOSED MY ACCOUNT WITH THEM NOW. IF YOU HAVE ONE CLOSE YOURS TOO BEFORE ITS TOO LATE...
I contacted this company to assist me in finding contractor to remove some material from my yard after I tore down an old storage building. The representative on the phone took my information, and told me that someone would contact me the following morning to give me an estimate on the work that I needed done.
NO ONE contacted me the next day. Don't waste your time dealing with these people. Hire a contractor yourself instead of depending on these people to assist you.
They charged me $108.00 for a an inexperienced contractor with no equipment. I wanted Christmas lighting and filled out a form they provided on line. On that form they asked a series of questions. One if I wanted the contractor to provide the lights and additional information. They sent me a contractor with no experience, no lights and no equipment. I am out $108.00 dollars. There is no phone # to speak to anyone directly. It is cat and mouse of click on this link and that link with no results. I would give them a negative star if I could.
I booked a carpet stretching appointment for 10:00 am on Saturday morning. At 8:00 am i received a text and an email to say that the appointment had been rescheduled to 10:00am on Monday. No phone call, no apologies, simply a "we're the only game in town, take it or leave it".
Needless to say i canceled everything, and have to start the whole exercise from scratch.
They will charge you for leads that you never even had a chance to talk to home owner or give an estimate. We goy a lead by the end of the day, called home owner next day in the morning and he said he wasn't interested and had a contractor already. We didn't even have the opportunity to give an estimate and they will no credit the fee, and this is one of many. I have lost count of all the leads we have try to contact at no avail and Home Advisor will not credit them. Stay aways for Home Advisor, they are thieves! Thumbtack and GoSmith are way better and even more inexpensive.
One contractor visited, quoted, then never returned calls/e-mails. A 2nd contractor came quoted the job then had little experience and equipment, left a mess to be torn out and reworked. 2nd Contractor was J. Lynn Landscaping - not capable of doing carpenter work.
WE GOT TOLD THAT WE WOULD'NT BE CHARGED UNLESS WE GOT THE LEAD. HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS LATER ABSOLUTLEY NO LIVE CALLS. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. THIS COMPANY SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE IN BUSINESS!
Answer: We had a similar experience when first trying Home advisor out. They kept taking money out of our account arbitrarily. I finally had to file stop payment forms at my bank. Then they threatened us with extra fees unless we "settled" our account. We have strict DTPA laws (deceptive trade practice act) in our state. I advised we complain to our Attorney General about this. I think home advisor should be banned in our state because of this fraud.
Answer: I didn't, they have been blowing my phone up for 6 month's now and now they act like thier desperate for me to sign with them. I have absolutely no want or will i ever sign with them after i have heard what thier doing to contractors who have a contract with them. I just signed with a family owned reality company and even they told me not to sign and even when i tell home advisor i don't want thier business they ignore my request and still call and now they act like thier a home owner requesting painting but once i get to asking where they live or information all of a sudden I'm being told to do a background check and i sign up for free! But i have to pay a percentage of my leads or size of job something of that nature where i pay them for a no guarantee of work as i see it. I can't trust handing money to a company that's being deceitful in a phone call off the rip! Just be careful i don't hear good thing's about them all over now.
Answer: Fake leads, sends email, text & calls between 20-30/day and charges for each. Even if Contractor doesn't open Or answer any calls! Will rip off contractors about $800/day until they catch it and no refunds! Do Not Use HomeAdvisor!
Answer: I don't know about the house cleaners but, I do not trust the company based on my own recent experience.
Answer: You don't know you have to call home advisor and wait on the phone for an hr until they pick up
