Audible has a rating of 1.3 stars from 581 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with Audible most frequently mention customer service, credit card and free trial. Audible ranks 80th among Audio Books sites.
I'm in the minority here, but I really enjoy Audible. Their customer service has been stellar to me. I love that you can return books (there are a few narrations that need to be retooled, for sure) and the selection and price for book credits is excellent, especially as compared to hard back books. The Audible Frontier line is especially good, with a lot of great narrators. I give out gift subscriptions and gift books and it's always worked out fine when I hear back from the recipients. My only concern with gift accounts is that if a person I've given 3 months to, only spends 2 of the 3 credits before the third month runs out, they have to sign up again before they can cash out that last credit. I think they should change that policy.
Your account maxes out at six credits, and if you go to pause your account they threaten to take all your credits (which you already paid for).
Don't waste your money, on their trap.
* A kind representative told me that there is a difference between pausing my account and canceling it. However, Audible only gave me an option to pay a "fee" to keep the credits I already paid for, for one year -- and they only did this when I was in the final phase of canceling my membership. Basically, they just want to squeeze as much money out of people as possible.
I used to love Audible - a couple of clicks and I could start listening. But a few months ago nothing worked and after wasting literally days googling for answers and trying to sort it myself I ended up paying a computer shop $120 to fix iTunes so I could get my audiobooks. Next, a couple of weeks ago I spend hours of my time, then an hour on 'chat' with an Audible tech to get my books to actually play. Now more trouble. Today I bought a new audiobook and it won't transfer from Download Manager to iTunes. I've deleted and downloaded again in both formats, tried every settings adjustment suggested on the Audible help page and nothing works. Deciding that life is too short to spend time going round in the same frustrating useless circles, I gave up and tried to return the book but I'm told I can't and have to contact a customer person. I am so angry that Audible have turned a quick and easy process into a total nightmare.
Charges totaling $170+ over the course of a year. I do not recall signing up for this service nor do I have an account. Company issued a partial refund only and refused to return the full amount. Beware. This company should be shut down! I have filed a complaint with the BBB and suggest anyone experiencing this problem to do the same for a prompt response.
I was charged $20 that I never spent, I was never even subscribed! Never purchased anything ever. I tried to get the matter resolved but instead I was met with an incompetent potato that wouldn't engage with me and who I could not understand at all - not just because this craphole company decided to base their call centre in India to save money like the cheap whores they are, but because HELLOOO CAN YOU ACTUALLY SPEAK AT A DECIPIL THAT HUMAN EARS CAN HEAR? I just want my $20 back and to talk to a person to resolve the issue. Complete bull$#*!, give me my f**** money and fire that SPUD. Thankyou not at all you sons of b*****.
Hello,
Please feel free to email us at social-support@audible.com for assistance with this charge. Thank you.^DB
Just the worst. I never managed to listen to a single second of audio book. It just sucks so bad. And after I'd cancelled my subscription they continued to charge my credit card so I wasted tonnes of time chasing refunds. AVOID AVOID AVOID.
Audible improves a lot from my previous reviews. I bought myself about 10 books and they put around some promotions as well, the trial give you 2 free books, but still a bit pricey.
Hi Max,
We are sorry to hear that you have not enjoyed our service. Regardless of your membership status or device, you should be able to access any audiobooks that were in your library. Please be sure you are signing into the correct account on your new device, and that you are in the Cloud section of the library. If you are still unable to locate your audiobooks after trying this, please email us at social-support@audible.com^DB
I had started using Audible for my college English class in which I didnt have enough time to read so I would rather have it read to me. I decided to give the website a try and was excited to finally be able to have the books read that I needed. Now three months later, I am reviewing my bank statements and realized that audible had been charging for a membership twice after the first 30 days. Now of course that would be fine but never once did I see an option to stop or not have automatic payments before i created the account. I remember this because stuff like this has happened to my parents before and i didn't want it to happen to myself. Of course, with my luck, I managed to now be down $30 i could have needed for basic life supplies.
Thanks audible, you $#*!ing piece of trash.
Hi Courtland,
We're sorry for any confusions! When enrolling, the website states that the membership continues at $14.95 per month and you can cancel at any time. Cancelling can be done through your Account Details page on the website, or by contacting Customer Support.
Please send us an email at social-support@audible.com and we will be happy to help sort this out for you.
I was a member for many years until I ran into financial trouble and had to temporarily shut off my account. I read on here where people complained about it being nearly impossible to cancel your account, it is simple. You just go to their site and follow the instructions. If you can't then you are not paying attention. The price for the audio books without a credit are a bit high in my opinion but the value for the monthly membership with credits is well worth it. They also have an exchange process where if you get a book (has happened twice for me) where you are unhappy with the recording you can return the book for a credit and get something else instead. I returned a book because I could not stand the voice of the reader and another because it was evident during the first chapter that It was not a book I would enjoy after all. I don't know why people are giving bad reviews on the site or having difficulty downloading/playing the books. I have at least 50 books from Audible and have not experienced any of those problems myself. I am hoping to reactivate my account once my finances shape up a bit more.
This is absolutely despicable company!. I took the free 30 day trial and didn't like it so I cancelled it after 14 days. But found that they took money out one month after me cancelling it and the membership was running since 2005! I don't think so, needless to say my bank now blocked them and I have all the cancelling emails and recording talking to the person on the phone clarifying that its been cancelled and charges refunded. I think this is another one to go to the courts to be scraped as the illegally take money out of banks. Do not do it, it is too expensive and rubbish it kept freezing when playing, get a talking book from library for less money.
Tried to work with customer support 3 different occasions just to get a free trial downloaded to my pc and ipod - disconnected 4 times - redialed only to be connected with a new call center and had to go over my questions again. SERIOUSLY - all I want to do was download 2 books to my pc & ipod - so much for a trial - NO SUBSCRIPTION FOR ME
Hi Susan,
We are sorry to hear about your experience! If you need any further assistance, please feel free to email us at social-support@audible.com
I saw a charge for 14.95 on my credit card, called to find out why it was charged, tranferred from amazon to audible, spent 21 minutes with operator before asking for a supervisor, then 6 minutes later I found out the charge was for a subscription service that I did not sign up for.
Hi Teresa,
We're sorry to hear about this experience! If you need any further assistance with any refunds, please email us at social-support@audible.com.
Definitely would recommend staying far clear of utilizing this company's services. Discovered close to $400 of unauthorized charges on my credit card (entered manually) by Audible for services which were neither ordered nor utilized. After repeated, in-depth conversations with their customer service reps, I was unfortunately not able to get the full amount charged credited back to my credit card account. I am now having to utilize the disputed charges process directly with my credit card company.
For what it's worth, the customer service reps are friendly, but unfortunately unable or unwilling to process full credit card refunds
Felt misled when I signed up to audible. Very hard to cancel a subscription to this. Don't do it. Don't do it don't do it.
Hi Clint,

I even don't know I has signed up in this $#*!! F**K you! Give me my money back! This Amazon service should be closed! It will be reported!
Hi Yeko,
We'd be happy to help sort this out for you! Can you please email us at social-support@audible.com so we can look into this on our end and work towards a resolution? Thank you.
I have been an Audible member for about 3 years. I drive for a living, so I listen to audiobooks constantly. Over the last 3 years, amazingly, Audibles web site and downloading ease have gotten WORSE not better. They seem to be terrified of pirating, and make regular customers jump through about fifteen hoops before you can download a book. The Audible Download helper, which is where you are supposed to download a book, and it puts it into either Itunes or on an Android device, is hopeless. Instead of just picking a format, and downloading it straight onto your device or computer, Audible tries to download it straight onto Itunes or their own app on your phone. All so you dont share with anyone else. Its ridiculous and feels like something from 20 years ago. Audible isnt going to change anytime soon, so if you have any other sources for getting the books you want at a good price, I would take it. Unfortunately the Itune store is way too expensive in comparison, so I am stuck with this clunky crap for the foreseeable future.
Have had to replace my credit card for the second time - big hassle, got to change about a dozen online accounts. I don't remember signing up for this. Glad I came here, I did not realize that Amazon Audio Books were involved. IIRC, the Audible site wanted me to give them credit card info (to verify or steal?) and charge me to unsubscribe.

Had an account, quality of books downloaded were fine, but customer service just simply horrible. Was on automated billing, receiving 2 credits a month. But there is a cap at 12, so once I racked up 12 credits, was still charged each month, however did not receive any new credits, so, basically them just taking my money for nothing in return. Once was ready to cancel account, they informed me that all my credits would disappear at the moment of cancellation, but I COULD pay an annual fee to retain said credits. So messed up.
Hi Jon,
We are sorry to hear about your experience! We would like to see if we are able to reinstate any of those credits that rolled over for you. Please feel free to email us at social-support@audible.com for assistance with this.
I've been with Audible for about two years and listen to their books at work. The service isn't cheap but the books are usually very high quality. The credit you get with the subscription can get you multiple books if you spend it carefully. I have no complaints about the service.
Answer: I've had the same problem, they charge me from the US AND Australia so I can't even cancel cos no access to these sites. If you manage to contact them, they should refund you
Answer: Not not a clue but they refunded me all the money back they took out my back so alls good
