Horrible site. I had all my photos set to private as well as my trees and someone was able to use them. What really has me upset they used my info to create a tree that has my deceased father and sister as another women's husband and child. Horrifying! Stay away or use code names for everyone in your tree. I have requested the removal of at least the pictures of my family members from that users tree (several times) and it's fallen on deaf ears.
Ancestry does what you'd expect. It finds the location(s) in the world that your previous generations come from and lived. My siblings match me so it is accurate. It only goes back 3-4 generations or so but it is supposed to get better as more people search.
Records were poor 100+ years ago so it's difficult to be specific.
I use to love ancestry.com and have been a subscriber for many years but this is my last subscription renewal. Since the last OS update on Safari, I have been unable to open records that I access through the leaf clue on Family Tree Maker. I have contacted Ancestry.com and they told me to use Google Chrome. It is a lot more trouble research that way so I will not renew. I guess Ancestry does not care if they lose subscribers. The picture below shows what happens when I click on a document e.g. census record.
I've been using this site for years. There is something to be said about learning where you come from. I appreciate the newest updates and the ability to utilize outside sites to collaborate on findings. You are able to easily search for new people and edit ones you've already added.
Revived my first DNA kit 2/2/2023 waited and waited what seamed like months just to receive a message that my sample was not good! Sent another kit same thing "sample no good! Sent another kit! This time I waited for over a hour after get out of bed! No water! No coffee! Absolutely nothing! Just received a message that that test was also no good! Can someone explain to me how the cops can get DNA off a coffee cup or cigarette butt and ancestry can't get it from three tubes of saliva! This will be my fourth try!
I'm kinda surprised at all the negative reviews. However, I can only speak from my experience which has been pleasant so far.
I managed to reconnect with many of my maternal grandfather's relatives and find out more information about my ancestors. My grandfather was born in 1915 and he was illegitimate. He never spoke much of his father's family so details have always been sketchy. He also died when I was pretty young. Thanks to Ancestry I now have a pretty good idea who his biological father was.
I was an Ancestry member for well over a decade. Paid annual memberships and had great customer service experiences, until now. They tell you that annual memberships save you money but that leads you into getting bigger packages and then automatically renewing your subscription and you cannot get a refund as it is written into their policy to deny refunds. Canceling now and never returning to Ancestry!
I cancelled my membership at Ancestry.com / Ancestry.org in early July of this year (2023) by calling the support line. Today I was reviewing my bank account activity and noticed that I was still being charged every month since July. I realized it was my fault that I did not make sure it was canceled, so I canceled it online. Ancestry charged me $25 fee for cancellation and still charged me the monthly membership fee as well. When I called to find out why, they basically said that they do not have any records of me calling in July snd that they will not refund my charges for this month either. My advice to anyone using this service is to be careful of being charged after cancellation.
I looked at the site under the free trial option but did not want to subscribe. I have used the site until i saw on my credit card statement that I had been charge £13.99 for a premium I never signed up to. I tried to cancel my membership online but there was no cancel button - I was a classified as a guest member. After phone the help line I am getting half of my payments refunded as a special consideration! I am very unhappy with this process.Attached is a photo of my so-called,transactions'
Horrible customer service, the service itself is not even close to worth 40$ a month. It's a ridiculous setup hard to navigate and the hints after the first one are mostly the exact same material from different places I don't need to know the same thing 20 times. Not user friendly, and the free trial has no notification so don't expect to be warned other then in reviews.
PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS: I purchased a gift for my friend, and Ancestry gave me a $1 subscription, stating it's a part of their AMAZING deal. They put you on a subscription automatically without letting you know and you have to go on their website to cancel. As a result,I was charged $99 for a KIT my friend didn't even activate, and they would not give any refunds. This is beyond insane, especially given the support tech just ended our chat randomly. DO NOT RECOMMEND purchasing anything from this company because they will send you all these wonderful promotions so it seems you pay less when they actually charge you twice as much for a mystery subscription you signed up for without knowing. That's insane.
I would vote ZERO stars if that were an option! Absolutely worthless for doing any type of search, and when you try to cancel the "free" trial, they STILL BILL YOU! AND CHARGE A $25 "CANCELLATION FEE"! SCAMMERS!
Money. Money. Money.
I signed up for a free trial, then life got in the way: pandemic, family, etc. Two months pass and I forgot to cancel my subscription! Oops, no worries, or so I thought, they charge $25 to cancel. That's right $25. Cha-Ching!
Mormons own this site and because of their religious beliefs (and completely ignorant to yours) they proxy baptize the dead (e.g. Your relatives). My parents know people who get paid to act as stand ins to be baptized. Hope you like your Protestant aunt or Jewish uncle having Mormon rites metaphorically performed on them.
I hate when the religious take over sites/businesses and make it all about what THEY do. Seriously, I'm an atheist and don't want any of their mumbo jumbo around my relatives.
They have substandard offerings and beware the free trial which turns into a nightmare to cancel and you rack up months of fees. Hopefully Zeta, who was unsympathetic has actually cancelled my "service"
So my sample got lost in the mail, there is an issue at the local usps, and now theyre making me wait until the very last minute of the 20 day return shipping time frame to send a replacement even though tracking was never scanned but the sample was received.so now it might be several months before i get any results from them. Thats why im going elsewhere next week to do the paternal one from amazon that takes two days.
No longer user friendly, constantly prompting to subscribe, even though I have already subscribed and paid. Can't accomplish anything because of this redirection. I used to like this site years ago, now it's a JOKE. Will not EVER recommend Ancestry.com. It sucks to say the least. Must have been taken over by scammers or aliens...
This site is pretty useful for researching your family, especially as a beginner. However, it gets pretty frustrating when you get stuck and can't find any more information. The only downside is that you have to pay to keep an account, but if you're okay with that then it's great.
Have subscribed to Ancestry for many years but now I will change to something more sensible. Whoever told them that the new site was any good?... It is simply terrible and has lost many of my notes & comments. Bad day Ancestry. Change back now. Or give us the choice.
Can't tell you how annoyed I am.

What kind of business never answers their phone and ignores its customers? For all the publicity that this business does on television etc. it seems a bit surprising that they alienate potential customers. I would like to know why.
Answer: I agree... so many current complaints yet they seem to be more concerned with signing up new, younger members who are more deeply engaged in technology. It is business to these folks and they have to get younger people joining to make more money long term. Baby boomers though are their natural market and as more boomers retire and have more time and discretionary income they will be the ones who will be likely to join over the next few years.
Answer: Hi Joan, I see Karen above has answered your question regarding the old site. Full that box in Joan, tell them why you are leaving, give it to them straight. Write what you have put above, and more if so inclined. I have told them exactly what I think of their new so called experience! I think they have got a nerve inflicting this on us without even asking. They have made so many errors on the profiles, I know I shall have to check through every person on my tree, the mistakes they have put on are unbelievable, maps have been added that have nothing to do with the person. But the whole new set up is not enjoyable to use at all, the background colour is very hard on the eyes. I hate this new site with a passion! They should give us the choice of the format. From feedback I have seen, most of their long term customers much prefer the old site, Ancestry don't seem to realise what a great unique format they had, it was really classy, I loved working on it for hours and hours. They should listen to their customers, because they are going to be leaving their site in droves when the old ancestry is not available anymore. I shall use the old site as long as possible, then look for somewhere else to do my researching
Answer: Go to the right side of the page up at top where you sign in, and in the pull down menu there will be a place to go back to the old, classic ancestry, you know however, soon they are pulling the plug
