I ordered a book. The wrong book was sent. When I contacted AbeBooks.com I was informed that I had to deal with the seller. I replied that I bought the book through their site. They replied with an email on how to contact the actual seller to attempt to return and get a refund for THE BOOK I NEVER ORDERED NOR WANTED. They were totally putting the monkey on my back. Their instructions with a myriad of loopholes with no bottom line assurance of a refund was SO CRYPTIC AND AMBIGUOUS. On my iPhone the steps they detailed to attempt a refund caused me to scroll through my full screen twice, it was that long. It was peppered with "if that doesn't work try this" yada yada. I told them that abebooks.com was my single point of contact for the screw up. Finally I told them that it wasn't worth my time to swim in their jello of instructions and that I would just throw the wrongly sent book in the garbage and take the loss. I had previously thought they were an upright company. They are anything but that. So tempted to close this review with a big swear word.
Please, if you haven't purchased from Abebooks yet, read this entire review. Thgen, I suggest you go to Barnes and Noble or any other reputable company to buy your books.
This is my msg to seller and Abebooks. I haven't gotten a response yet, but they haven't gotten my follow-up via Certified Mail yet either!
"Please enlighten me as to who is responsible for the sale of garbage that has the name of your company on my order receipt in connection with the trash that was mailed to me. The following message was sent to Discover Books because that is the name in the return address on the package of trash I received.
"Hello: I received today, a book that I purchased from your company through Abebooks on February 21,2022. The book, "No Limits-Just Edges, Jackson Pollock paintings on paper," with pages 73 through 74; 95 through 108, and 111 through 124 all torn out of the plates section and which renders the book, TOTAL GARBAGE! I've attached several images that I'm sure will not come as a surprise to you.
IN addition, I cannot call you because your telephone is conveniently disconnected! However, I'll be lodging complaints against your company and Abebooks with everyone under the sun until I have you permanently banned from selling on the Internet and Abebooks gets all the negative exposure I can offer. I also demand a full refund immediately."
As the case may be, I believe I am seeing several layers of protection between seller and a party that represents sellers for the purpose of shielding yourselves against liability.
Unfortunately, for every one of you, the level of deception you've been getting away with pissed off the wrong person!

They sent me the wrong book and won't even email me back about it. Stay away. Now can't find the book for my son's class now.
Dont do business with AbeBook they refuse to take an order without making an account and they lie and say thats the only way that its possible
AbeBooks was the only company that had the vintage book I wanted at a fair price! The communications and the shipping time was great.
The communication from the customer support is really good. Very pleased with the items received. Thanks again
I purchased a book which needed an access code. They did great and sent the book with the access code. Book looks new. I am thankful.
Don't buy anything from them! They don't follow through and their customer service SUCKS! Buy from someone else.
They shipped the book within two days of the order and I received the book several days later. The book arrived in pristine condition.
Ordered a few here and there and had no issues. Ordered a few Calendars too and all came just as good.
Excellent choice of books, often unbeatable prices and an exceptional customer service to go with it.
My order is super late, I ordered on Sept. 6, and we are in mid-October. No one has contacted me yet!
Order confirmed, but then cancelled for unavailability. Still listed as available on website. Unreliable!
Ordered from this company as it was a Canadian/BC based business. Found the book I was looking for from a UK seller via the platform, at a great price. The seller had a high rating and the shipping was slated for no later than the 31st of March.(World of Books) I received confirmation of purchase but no tracking or dispatch information. The 31st came and went and I messaged the seller (as per the site instructions) to find out what was happening. I didn't hear back from them so I emailed ABE books. I did receive a response fairly fast, however, I was advised that the seller canceled the order as they didn't actually have the book in stock. They provided a standardized response about how I could contact the seller to find out why it was canceled and that orders canceled by the seller would count against their rating. A different email received shortly after, stated (ABE) they apologized for the issue and had in fact sourced another book that would be dispatched within 24 hours- Great!
Two days later, I still had no follow up to this email so I sent another request. To which, I received the same cookie cutter response regarding how to contact the seller etc.
I sent 6 emails asking simply for them to confirm whether or not I needed to source this item elsewhere as they still hadn't confirmed the promised replacement.
Instead, I received email that the purchase had been refunded.
I asked again.
Same cookie cutter response.
Also, the same seller (World of Books) was STILL listing this item for sale.
Another 4 emails.
This morning I receive an email stating they weren't able to find a replacement (lie since there are multiple on their site but they were more costly than what I paid) so my order was refunded.
I understand things happen, but what I don't appreciate is when a company makes a promise to "make things right" then ghosts you, then outright lies.
Guess it's back to ordering from Amazon.
Absolutely, garbage company.
A book that was ordered on November 19th for a Christmas gift was never received. A bitter disappointment. Do NOT use this vendor.
Ordere a book and payed $20 plus $10 for express shipping. Got here in 4 days. Perfect conditions, and in the store the book was $170.00 plus tax!
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
