I ordered a book on abebooks from (surprise surprise) irish booksellers (so many angry reviews about them online- wish i'd seen them first) they sent me a heavily damaged book and wouldnt entertain resolving the issue fairly as returning the item would have cost double what i paid.
But what's worse is abebooks the site responsible for that sale are cowards who do nothing about sale disputes or impossible returns they instigate sales and then basically after they take their cut you're on your own. They dont give a damn about you so don't entertain using them AVOID THIS SITE!
I paid extra to have a copy of the book in good condition;

I bought a book on the Abebook sight and then received it from BookDepository.
The book received was a cheap produced knock off of the original with print was so small I can hardly read it. I went back to Abebook C/S who advised me to go back to BookDepsitory and ask them for a refund and if they accept it then I have to pay to ship it back to them? Very poor customer service, no ownership in this matter. They use to be a very good quality book seller. I wonder if they were sold like BookDepository was. I will never buy from them again. "Buyer beware."
My book came damaged! After numerous times trying to contact them. They never tried to resolve the matter. Do yourself a favor use order from someone else!
I've only ever placed a few orders with AbeBooks, however, none of them have ever went well. To date this company still can't seem to do business with booksellers that actually care about their customers. Once again I placed an order for a SINGLE book, and lo-and-behold it never got shipped by the fraudulent bookseller who was supposed to ship it out. The tracking stated a label had been created, but then stayed in that status endlessly until I finally filed a claim with my card issuer to recoup what was owed to me. Word to the wise, DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THIS ROTTEN COMPANY! ALL THEY'LL DO IS TAKE YOUR MONEY AND RUN! SCREW ABEBOOKS!
I paid 50$ for a book on April 13,2020 and was said to have my product by or on May 16th, 2020. It is now June 18th, 2020 and I still do not have my product. The seller wouldn't respond to any of my messages to try to fix the issue nor could you reach anyone through the customer service number listed online. Coincidentally the number was out of commission. I filed a complaint online and informed them that I'd like a refund and to provide a new card or payment method to receive my refund with since my previous card used is no longer active... but that went as high a the ceiling. I would't advise ANYONE to purchase any products from this company unless your have money to just GIVE AWAY.
I have ordered twice from Abe Books, the second time the book was fine, but the first time I ordered two identical books both supposedly 'Good', but I wouldn't really describe either as good, and one of them (ex-library) had a piece cut out of a page! Even if that had not been spotted then the overall look of the book should have warranted a lesser price and description.
I ordered a $99.00 book plus $25 for shipping back on May 31,2020. I have yet to receive this book. My order is marked as shipped, but there's no tracking. I'm STILL trying to get my refund. SCAM!
Hi! I bought a book for my paralegal class from this company a month ago. I paid for a shipping. I was at home the whole day when I should receive my package. Nobody called in my door bell. Next day I checked status of delivery it said that package was left on front door but it was`t there. Delivery guy couldn't left package outside because it was raining and I live in 4 apartments house. Nobody couldn't took it. I was at my post office. They said that nothing can help me. I could't make a claim that return my money from post office because my package did't have insurance. I paid for my book $115. I did't sign and allow that delivery guy could left package near front door. I was tried to discuss this situation with Abebook via email but they said it is not their problem. They are working online and want to save customers. Yhey should do something that everyone will be happy! Why are Amazon or Ebay popular? Because in this case they always send money back or a new one order.
UNBELIEVABLE! I recently mailed them an $80 college textbook that I had just finished using because they quoted me a buyback price of $42.65. I recently received an email from them stating that "the book was not an authorized copy" and they are "seizing it" and will NOT issue my payment or return MY book back to me. SERIOUSLY?! It is MY book... I mailed it to you in good faith that you were sending me a check for it. Literally they could turn around and resell my book for a huge profit... clever little scam GrrRRRrrrrrrr
These people can't seem to list books under the correct ISBN. I ordered books which I thought had the correct ISBN, only to find out that it was completely different from what I had ordered. When I requested a refund/return, they tell me that it's my fault. To add to that, they cancel one of my textbook orders because someone else had already ordered it? Hello!? Why was it listed if it was already sold!?
In short: Look elsewhere for books. Abe Books is scum, parading around acting like they're reliable and trustworthy, when they can't make a user-friendly interface/DECENT CUSTOMER SUPPORT even if they tried.
I returned a book that I didn't need anymore and had the worst experience. First I was told my package hadn't been received and could not be located. I sent the tracking number with the attachment that it had been received. It wasn't until then that acknowledged they received it, then they processed my refund for $4.33 although I purchased the book for $69.13. My return was well within the 30 day period and met all requirements for a full refund.
I've used Abebooks to find good copies of worthwhile books at the lowest prices almost since the site opened---and after placing hundreds of orders that have been promptly filled and fairly billed, I remain 100 percent delighted with the site. I don't normally bother reviewing websites, but have taken the trouble to do so in this instance because I strongly suspect the negative reviews I've encountered here are put up by ABAA booksellers.
I bought a textbook from this website, where the title told me I would get a Pearson code, so I paid 98$ (shipping was like $5, the textbook itself was $92) When the book arrived, there was not a code so I emailed the company and they were very difficult, and made me pay an extra $11 for shipping returns. Go to Chegg or Amazon!
I ordered my book for my microeconomics on September 11th. The estimated delivery date was the 25th, which at first I thought was pretty late delivery date, but I was willing to stick with it. It is now Oct 12th and I have already gotten the scores back from my first exam, and the book still has not arrived. I emailed them but they said they cannot do anything unless it is 25 days past the estimated delivery date, and that they don't have a tracking number for me! Stay Away!
I searched by ISBN number and found two books from one supplier. I ordered the books and immediately sent an email to the seller asking them to confirm the ISBN number of the books before they ship as this series has the same title but four volumes. I gave them the Vol. 3 ISBN and they emailed bak "YES". Guess what... I received two copies of Vol1. They want me to pay postage to send their mistake back before they refund my money! Really! I emailed them to confirm prior to post. RIP-OFF They can send you anything and you must pay to return.
I ordered a book (a new copy) on Dec. 7 and finally received it (a USED copy!) on Jan 23rd, after several emails and the run-around from their sorry version of customer service. HORRENDOUS customer service. If these guys worked for me, they wouldn't work for me.
I sent a textbook to be bought back by AbeBooks who outsources all there buybacks to textbookrush.com and I was scammed! They sent me some crap about the book being counterfeit and them not paying me for it and the company keeping my book! I am very angry! They are crooked and should not be allowed to be in business.
Do not buy from them! Do not buy from them! Poor/unexisting costumer service!
I bought a $150.00 book.
They sent me a $17.00 with a similar Title.
I paid for shipping to received the book. I had to pay for shipping again to send back the book due to their mistake.
I initiated a refund few day ago.
I still haven't received my money back on my credit card after few days.
I will probably have to open a dispute with my credit card company to fight for the amount of money spent on the book.
Moreover, the customer service doesn't exist.
They do not have a phone number where to call.
They only have an email address where you can write and they usually answer after 1 or 2 days. However, their answer are always the same. Big lies.
So, please do not run in my same mistake.
Do not buy from them!
Do not buy from them!
Poor/unexisting costumer service!
Abe Books is the WORST! Don't believe their listings as to where a book is coming from! Won't refund return postage EVEN IF it is their mistake or an incorrect listing! They may reply to emails, but then all email communication ceases and you will NEVER hear from them again, even if they say that they will refund you. BEWARE!
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
