Ordering from this site cost me $7.45 in return shipping because of wrong item sent. I waited 2 weeks for something (the wrong something) that I could have had from Amazon in 2-days in 1/5 the price. Thought I was buying quality... NOPE!
The most aggravating part is that I started emailing them a week ago. Only received canned non-helpful replies. Finally got the DHL tracking number, and when I called DHL, I was told they received an email saying they would get something to ship 3 WEEKS ago -- but never received an item. No customer service, no information, no book for me. Never again.
I was amazed, their shipping was estimated to be a month. It was a difficult book to find though and it was a new book. But but in fact it was not new - it was inscribed on the front cover as a gift. I paid for new and did not get it. Will not buy from them again.
If I could give a zero star I would. I bought a textbook and ended up switching classes. I asked to cancel the order prior to shipping and they said they couldn't process a return unless it was a fault of the seller. Very poor customer service. Will not purchase from this company again and definitely do not recommen.
Don't for a moment think that the shipping times you are given at the time of ordering is real. It's a joke. Typically, this is called false advertising; at AbeBooks, I have a feeling, it's called business practice. Never again.
Purchased book marked as New - it was actually used and had an inscription from the previous owners in the front cover. Apparently, seller had 'sent me the wrong one' and now did not have a new one to send me.
I was shipped a wrong book from an address in the US, then on asking for a refund, was asked to ship book to Thailand, with tracking, and that return shipping isn't refundable. Shipping to Thailand costs a lot! Is it a method to prevent any returns? I wonder...
My order number was ********** for an Economics book.
I ordered 2 used books and they are in better condition than the actual description of them. I must admit, it took a little longer to get them than I expected but they actually did come before the projected date. While waiting for them I read the reviews and feared I wouldn't get the books, but I did. I would not hesitate to order from them again.
Never received an expensive book ordered through Abebooks, waited for months due to customs clearance not included in estimated delivery date and the covid situation, seller did not reply to my several enquiries and now the refund deadline is expired, no refund available! Absolutely rubbish customer experience, and looking at the numerous similar reviews they don't seem to care a tiny bit about it! [Update: I made a complaint to AbeBooks & through the BetterBusinessBureau of Vancouver, and Abebooks tried contacting the seller, with no reply again for 48 hours, and then refunded me in full. I suggested they follow up better their sellers and proactively setup automated alerts for clients when the refund deadline approaches to make sure the delivery has arrived. Good response in the end but a very bad process, such a shame! I did reorder the same book ohn Abebooks from another seller after chceking that they were responding, and it did arrive normally]
1) I purchased a supposedly "new" book from them, but only after paying for it did they reveal that it was "used."
2) I paid for expedited shipping, but after paying for it, they revealed that the book would not arrive for up to 16 days.
3) I have tried to contact them to cancel my order bc of the above circumstances, but have received No Reply.
4) I don't recommend these people.
Books advertised as hardcovers turn out to be paperbacks 15-20 percent of the time. Address labels are routinely bungled, resulting in packages being mis-delivered or returned to sender. Wrong editions or sometimes even the wrong books altogether are often sent. And, as a final nail in the coffin, the carrier used is the utterly wretched USPS, which creates a second set of problems with regard to handling, timely delivery, etc. One gets the impression, overall, that Abe Books and its various sellers view books as nothing more than widgets, just another product, and that no one involved knows or cares much about books. To channel an old anti-drug PSA: Abe Books. I stopped. You shouldn't start.
Chasing a rare book? If you can't find it on Amazon or at one of the major booksellers then your best hope is Abe Books (www.abebooks.com). This is a great book collector's site that taps into the hundreds of specialist booksellers around the world. If more than one seller has the title you are looking for you will be able to compare prices and shipping terms. They have European sites as well – www.abebook.co.uk (UK), www.abebooks.de (Germany), www.abebooks.fr (France) and http://www.iberlibro.com/ (Spain). Doesn't have the smell and feel of a good antiquarian bookshop but it saves on a lot of shoe leather!
I ordered a textbook from this website and everyone is useless. First, I was unable to track my package. Second, I didn't even receive the book I ordered and now they are REFUSING to refund me. Do not purchase from them. Save yourself from the dissatisfaction and headache. They are horrible, if I could rate them 0 stars I would
Wow, what a bad purchase!! The book came from "India". It SMELLS horribly - I don't know if it's the ink, or the paper, or something else, but the smell is noxious..... AND it is woefully undersized! The original was 9 x 12 but this "book" must be 6 x 9 The print is so small, I'll ruin my eyes if I try to use it. VERY disappointed and I will never buy from them again.
Bought a book that supposedly should be unmarked and in mint condition from a 5 star seller, in fact the book was worn and ugly and had seller signature and address in ink on first page! Be warned, you wo´t be paid for return postage as promised!
I paid for a basketball covered NIV bible for my husbands birthday from "Irish Bookseller". I was sent some random camo bible, then I saw the book I paid for up for sale again for $200. The seller would not respond to me until I reported them and now I have to pay to send the book back and go through all this hassle. Instead of sending the book I paid for they want to refund me which I mean. That's not the point. I want the present for my husband. After this is over I am terminating my account which I only made to order this book. An extremely pissed off unsatisfied customer.
Like so many others book never came. Tried contacting customer services 3times but only the automated reply. I ended up giving up. Ended up getting the book elsewhere so ended up paying full price anyhow. Disappointing as thought found a way to get second hand items rather than elbowing others at school fayres!
No photo as no book
I'm a deeply involved private genealogist here in the USA. I used Abebooks to locate a difficult to find book called The Web of Fortune. It was found, the price was reasonable, I bought it, it was delivered from England to the US in a timely manner. Arrived in the condition described. I had no problems and will use Abe's again.

Abe Books seemed very efficient and pleasant to deal with - I wanted a copy of one of the books by Icelandic photographer Ragnar Axellson, and they had several in stock apparently (some at very high prices). I ordered the book in February and was told it would be delivered in late April - I waited. I was told another bookseller, Murray Media, was actually supplying the book. To cut it short, I could not track the delivery. They claimed it had been "lost in transit". Abe Books refunded my payment. When I questioned what had happened, the e-mails became curt and less well written! I won't be dealing with either company again. (PS Our local bookshop thinks they have found a copy, and at a lower price too.)
I placed an order on 5th October and made a mistake in the delivery address (Greece instead of USA). As soon as the order confirmation came through (within 1 minute) I saw the mistake and immediately notified Abe books. I was told I had to contact the shipper which I did, within 5 minutes. I received no response. Today (7th October) I was notified that the order had been shipped - to the wrong address. I contacted Abe books and was told it was too late. This is completely unacceptable, and close to fraud.
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
