I REPEAT, DO NOT PURCHASE... I ordered a book on 08. 17. 18 with an estimated delivery date of 09. 10. 18. I contacted company and stated the book was mailed the next day. Perhaps I should check with my neighbors to see if it was sent to them... REALLY DUDE? Needless to say the book NEVER arrived. After multiple emails - no resolve. I called many times and spoke with 3 different individuals and finally on 09. 27. 18 I received a refund back to my credit card. The persistence paid off but NEVER AGAIN!
Purchased a book (The Stand) from them, in used, lightly worn condition. Or at least that is what the listing claimed. Got the book in a somewhat reasonable amount of time, to find that it was in far worse shape - dust cover was torn completely through and pages were worn on edges. Contacted seller to make comment and got a standard "we have received your email" response. A few days later I get an email telling me that they have conveyed my complaint to the seller (Owls Books) and I should expect an email from them. Nothing. Crickets. Simon and Garfunkel singing Sound of Silence.
Send another email to Abebooks. Same thing, but this time I was directed to a web page to initiate a refund. Then I was expected to return the book, at my shipping cost. Nope. I was told I would be reimbursed but TBH I have lost any faith in either seller.
Many years I always bought from Abe Books, over all other booksellers.
I am a public library librarian. Recently I discovered their customer "problem" response-an automated system website---is, in effect: If there is a screwup, it is the responsibility of the consumer/customer.
I have purchased a lot of used books from AbeBooks and never had an issue. The books always arrive ahead of time and in the condition mentioned or better. The pricing structure and any other information regarding the sale is very clear. A great place to shop for books.
I have used Abe Books for many years and recently have been very dissatisfied with the quality of books being sold when they arrive. I expect Very Good to mean - no creases, no discolouration, clean, etc. Since Abe Books do not allow feedback on sellers as they judge them by the number of orders fulfilled I will only be using Abe Books in future when I absolutely cannot source the book from somewhere else, even if it means having to pay a bit more.
Ordered three new hardback books with express shipping. Books trickled in over a couple of weeks. First book was damaged, second book was questionably new, and third book was a softcover. Tried to resolve this or get any kind of customer service but never got anything other then they'd let the distributor know.
Purchased a new book from this site, 8 weeks later still had not arrived and they offer to replace with a second hand book. It is obvious what they are doing.
They never had the book in the first place
They charge you a huge price for book and shipping
They have the use of your money for a few months or more
I ordered and paid over $30 dollars for a softcover book that arrived poorly packaged and subsequently with a broken spine. This means the book is basically worthless as a collectible item. When I demanded a partial refund, they offered me a slimy $2.50. I will never buy off of AbeBooks again and I recommend YOU do not either.
Ordered an Abrams book for $102.97 described as "new" and received a book with a broken binding. Ready to fall apart. Could have bought a new copy from from another seller for $40 less, but couldn't guarantee delivery when needed, or a good used copy from eBay for $35. As this was a birthday gift, wanted a pristine copy and on time for birthday. Outrageous and unacceptable!
Buying books from this site is always a crap shoot. You never know what you will get when you order a book. Few pictures, poor descriptions make it a mystery what you get. My experience has been horrible both times I tried to purchase from them.
I ordered a textbook with expected delivery in 5-8 business days. After 12 business days passed, I called AbeBooks - no one is available on the weekend. I submitted an online claim - their website claimed they would reply within 2 business days, however, they replied in 4 business days. Their email response stated the "USPS lost the book in transit," and they would refund my purchase price (obviously - but that doesn't help I'm overdue needing the book for class). A follow-up email from AbeBooks claimed the reason for return was "bookseller accepted order in error." I'm not sure why their rationale changed, but it adds to my perception of their untrustworthyness - I will not be ordering from AbeBooks again.
I ordered a cook book and thought I was getting the used book for a decent price. When it arrived I realized that the reason I saved s couple bucks was because my book was printed in black and white and terrible quality! It did mention within the paragraph description however knowing what book you want title, author etc, you're not looking for book description and I feel it should highlight this fact!
I ordered a book according to the abebook description. When I received my book it was a tiny book telling me about the book I was trying to order. When I contacted customer service I was told I could return the book, but because the isbn # matched there records I'd have to eat the cost of shipping both ways, which would cost more then book and leave me with nothing. It doesn't matter that the book was falsely advertised. Don't do business with this company. They will rip you off.
After reading about other people's bad experiences I was a little apprehensive about buying from Abe Books. I decided to take a chance anyway because the book I wanted to buy was so hard to find and it would have been much more expensive had I been able to find it elsewhere. My book arrived sooner than expected and it was just as described and very well packed. I'm only sorry I couldn't leave positive feedback for the seller.

Bought a book from Abebooks.com 10 days ago, got the confirmation email but nothing ever since.
Today tried to log in to check what is going on, found out that my account is locked!
Abebook's site says that my email is unreachable but that is not true as I have been receiving their newsletter as usual!
I have emailed them but so far no answer, I wish I had seen their terrible reviews before I wasted my time with them, they are not a serious company!
Here's the message on their site when I try to log in:

BE WARNED!
Ordered eight books through AbeBooks, which they then confirmed the order had been forwarded to Wilmington Books & More. I have previously ordered books from AbeBooks and received them in a timely manner.
NOT SO with Wilmington Books!
I have sent repeated e-communications to both AbeBooks ("we are forwarding your message to Wilmington Books..." -- which, now, has proved entirely useless and an evasive shirk by AbeBooks) and to Wilmington Books -- which have all gone unanswered. A request for a refund of my several-hundred-dollar-order has resulted in nothing. AbeBooks merely continues their evasive shirk routine, refusing to take any responsibility in the matter.
God save us from putrid, dishonest con-men/women like AbeBooks and Wilmington Books! Not going back there, to be sure.
Recently bought two new textbooks from Abebooks. Paid over $100 for each book. Each shipment arrived with an invoice from a seller other than who I ordered from, for an inferior condition book which the seller only paid $10 or $20 for. This is a scam! I have sent two complaints to ABEbooks. They don't seem very concerned. This drop shipping tactic can get a seller banned on Amazon for life. Seems to happen often with this company. I ordered two new books and got two used very good or rebound used books that the sellers only paid $20 for.
This is the worst company I have ever ordered from and I now whish I had checked the reviews first. If you're smarter than me and read these, please please don't give them your business. They sent me something completely different than what I had ordered and since I sent it back to get my original item they stopped replying to me emails! So I paid for an item I will now never get. They literally stole from me! Run fast and run far!
I used AbeBooks for the first time to try and buy some Folio Book versions of the classics for my kids. Brand new, these books are quite expensive, but I heard that there are lots of used copies around. After searching the site for Folio books, finding ones with the Folio version pictured, and paying $55USD for 3 books, I got 2 of 3 books. They were ugly, cheap abbreviated versions. I am debating recycling versus donating them. :( So disappointed.
When I contacted the seller, I got a "not our fault" message saying that they often just use whatever photos they want, so you need to check the ISBN number. Hope that helps if you decide to order anyway.
I buy a lot of books, and if this would have been a positive experience, I would have been a repeat customer.
I ordered a book titled 'perennial vegetables' by Hanna Krem for 7.11 GBP and received what is only a very simple pamphlet. Also purchased what was described as a book and its a MP3 audio. Yes, there is a returns policy apparently, but air freight return would cost as much as original purchase, and then I would have to wait for refund. I have regularly ordered books from other sites, totally without incident, but this is a new experience, and one to be avoided in future.
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
