The overall reputation of the company reflects significant dissatisfaction among customers, particularly regarding its customer service and reliability. Many users report frustrating experiences with delayed refunds, poor communication, and unhelpful support staff. Complaints about properties not matching descriptions or being in unacceptable conditions are prevalent, leading to a loss of trust. While a few customers express occasional satisfaction with specific transactions, the overwhelming sentiment leans towards a lack of accountability and professionalism. This has resulted in a growing number of users opting for alternative platforms, indicating a critical need for improvement in service quality and responsiveness.

Booked my trip on 6.16. My amex was charged right away for the full stay AND a deposit. No problem - hold on to my $4k. However, provide some value, provide ANY value. VRO's State-of-the-art" chatbot advises 20min to chat with someone, still waiting after 4.3 hours. Calling HomeAway - another AKA for VRBO, becuase just like all criminals do - don't use your real name. Waiting 86min to speak someone that kept putting me on hold because they are outsourced overseas and they cannot answer a simple questions. I will spare you all the facisnating details, however, that is 2hrs of my life i wont get back. What a waste of space! Happy Bankruptcy - when they do go belly up - drinks are on me!
I booked a townhouse thru VBRO in Cape Cod for two weeks a few months ago and paid in full. Was suppose to start in just a few weeks. Yesterday I got a text from the owner saying she wanted to take back some days of the second week. I told her that was be difficult because my adult son and his wife were coming those days. They had purchased plane tickets for the trip. Since I couldn't give her the days back she texted me that she was cancelling the lease! Now it is in the middle of the summer and very few places are available. In addition, VRBO doesn't let you write a review warning others of these types of owners.
My family and I went to stay in a cabin for three nights and four days on June 29 2020. We ended up coming home the first night because of a mice issue in one of the bedrooms which is unacceptable! Lost all the money we had paid! My children were terrified to say the least. After seeing that it made all of us feel like the cabin was not clean and they need to get a exterminator.
VRBO is the worst company that I've ever come across with in the US, in my entire life. My advice to all of you is to STAY FAR AWAYYY from this so-called company. I'm a landlord who works with various companies, including VRBO. A tenant checked out from my house on June 21st, 2020, who rented the house through VRBO. Since 06/21/2020, VRBO has not transferred the rental money to my account. For the past 12 days, I've been calling VRBO, every single day, and waited at least one hour on the phone to get connected to a VRBO "agent." Each agent has done his/her best to go above and beyond the limit to LIE to me on the phone. They keep telling me that they have the money; yet, due to a "technical issue only," they could not transfer the money to me. Each agent told me that the billing department would contact me, and until today, no contact has been made. I think they just do not have the money as they are not even returning the money to those who rented, but also cancelled the rental due to COVID-19. Everyone, please DO NOT rent through VRBO, use other web sites to rent. Please advise what to do & how to proceed to get my money back. If someone knows how to handle this situation, please let me know.
So I can't physically leave the country due to the covid 19 climate. I booked two nights in Greece with a merchant, and he has not replied to any of my messages. I don't even want the money back, I'd just like a voucher. But he/she keeps ignoring all my messages. Called VRBO, and they said they don't deal with problems between the merchant and myself... Called MasterCard to start a dispute, they said unless the merchant tells me they can't house me, MasterCard can't help. This is not right.
We stayed in a Fernandina Beach VRBO condominium in early Feb and the cleaning was so poor I wanted to leave. The housekeeping management co. Had "forgotten" we were arriving and the unit was not cleaned between guests. Upon arrival we realized this and phoned. Two people were sent over and quickly changed linens and mopped the unit while we waited. During our stay we noted bath mats were downright filthy with hair and other debris, among other things. Per the instructions inside the condo, we stripped the beds to place sheets in the washer at departure and discovered the mattress protector had excessive stains. This is something the housekeeping staff sees each time they change the linens and just left it. There is no way to let the owner know they are not getting their money's worth from the management company because the renter cannot communicate directly with the owner. All communication is handled by the management company. We have stayed at a number of VRBO's over the years and each time the particular listing is either misrepresented or cleaning is substandard or both. Not to mention the condition of the mattresses, usually worn out. We have had enough of VRBO and want to say buyer beware!
If only 'zero' stars were an option for this review... For the record, THE HOMEOWNER'S I DEALT WITH WERE AMAZING, but due to unknown future travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, I cancelled 2 separate reservations on 04.26.2020, well before the full refund cancellation cutoff. VRBO, not the homeowner, has my money, but VRBO HAS STILL NOT ISSUED A REFUND TO ME AFTER 9 WEEKS. I called to request information and following brief discussion, I was placed on hold so the agent could 'research' my reservation cancellation info. I was advised that I now have a case # and my delayed refund was being escalated to a production team, however no further information was given. This agent had a perfectly memorized and limited script which included zero info on timing for contact from said production team to address my 'case', and a total refusal to connect me to their supervisor or manager who was deemed unavailable. I couldn't be more frustrated or disappointed, and VRBO has done a great disservice to amazing homeowners that will not get my future business if they remain connected to VRBO
Terrible company to do business with. They charged me $110 service fee which I wasn't aware of and was not listed on my receipt.
When I complained about it, they told me that fee is posted on their website. It may be but I never saw their website. The reservation was made by phone, the fee was not mention, nor did I receive a copy of the website. It was not in my in-box nor in my junk mail.
I consider this to be hidden and deceptive practices. They can keep the $110 but I; ll never do business with them again and will advice others to do the same.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do NOT USE THIS COMPANY. Their Better Business Beau rating is a F. This company does NOT care about you. IF THEY GET YOUR MONEY, THEY WILL GIVE NOTHING BACK. Why does the USA allow companies to operate like this now? The travel industry has become greedy
Booked a vacation about a year ago way before covid. I have been trying to get in touch with them to ask covid related questions and policies. There is no email to company listed only chat and phone which are both impossible to get anyone. I am now on a wait for agent which was supposed to be 13 min. It's been an hour and no contact. Last night I left a wait and this morning I noticed someone contacted me in chat 12 hours later, while i was asleep. It's been long enough since the beginning of the virus for them to hire more agents and get it together. As I speak now they just disconnected me after an hour.
I booked a cabin through VRBO, and within 24 hours of booking they sent an email with a lengthy explanation of double booking and they cancelled my reservation. It has so far taken 8 days and no refund yet, this was their fault and not mine! I called VRBO and communicated with owner that we need a prompt refund so we can make another reservation. They say 1-4 weeks... and just keep offering excuses! NEVER book with VRBO unless money and accountability are not a concern.
Property is Robin's Hood Cabin, Fayettville, WV.
Due to covid I had to cancel my trip. I cancelled on April 27th well now its June 30th and i still don't have a refund because the owner has ghosted me and VRBO wont do anything about it because they say the owner has to do the refund WELL HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET THEM TO REFUND ME IF THEY ARE PURPOSELY AVOIDING ME. So VRBO just has 2K of my money during these hard financial times. VRBO customer service reps arent helpful, i have wasted countless hours with them and i still dont have my money back. Ill never book with them again and will highly suggest to my friends and family to never book with them either. What a bunch of scum bags.
Seriously how is VRBO getting away with this? And the renters are sitting back collecting checks. VRBO was useless when I needed to cancel my trip due to A GLOBAL PANDEMIC. The homeowner refused to give us a refund and said why should they return my money, thats not fair to them. What? ITS MY MONEY you dingdong. Don't rent from Michelle Calabio on VRBO. They use a female name and picture but it's actually two creepy guys, one names Hermann Kessler and the other Florian who call you from random numbers. And DONT stay at the property with the property ID *******.
Booked a cabin on the VRBO website and was emailed from the owners within an hour asking "did you intentionally cancel your reservation?". I never cancelled anything. I then looked at the reservation on VRBO's site and sure enough, it showed as cancelled. I had a purchase on my credit card for the deposit though, so I called in to customer service to discuss, and was told multiple times "we did not charge your credit card", but they did and I explained the charge came out of my account. The agent was like a broken record; no explanations as to why the reservation was cancelled. All he could do was continue saying "we didn't charge your card". Finally, at the end of the call the agent said "your card will be refunded within 48 hours". Never booking here again. Still never got any explanation. Now I just wait and hope the money gets refunded.
I booked a place for our vacation through vrbo. The property owner emailed me later that night to say he double booked by mistake and cancelled and issued a refund. This was not our fault this was an error by the property owner. Does VRBO care? Nope. Now this horribly run company is telling me I have to wait 3 weeks for a refund... meaning we now get to spend our vacation at home because we can't book another place without this refund. I contacted them telling them I'd be ok with a credit instead of a refund so we could actually take a vacation and they didn't even bother to respond. I wish I could rate them zero stars but the best I can do now is warn others to stay away from this trash company.
Our trip to Paris was cancelled due to Covid. The flights were cancelled by the airline and Paris was closed to tourists. This was early June 2020. The owner of this property refused to give a full refund, which is extremely unfair during the unprecented times. VRBO said they could do nothing and they did nothing. I'm out 1,000 euros and I'll never use VRBO again. Beware this property for not doing the right thing.
We booked a week long trip to Arizona but found out that our state issued 2 week quarantine orders for anyone traveling to Arizona. So, unfortunately, we had to cancel because we can't miss 3 weeks of work. The property owner offered no refund unless he was able to rebook. Then, if he was able to rebook, he would offer partial refund. Thankfully, he was able to rebook & we received a partial refund from him. (Better than nothing I guess) However, VRBO refuses to refund their service fee & taxes since we didn't receive a full refund. So, they are getting nearly $400 of our money - plus, the taxes and fees from the new people who booked the property. Sad to see a business taking advantage of a Pandemic! You would be better off booking directly with the property owner and NOT using VRBO!
DO NOT BOOK ON THIS SITE. IT IS A SCAM AND NOTHING IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ACTUAL PROPERTY.
THEY TOOK A 500 DOLLAR PAYMENT FOR JUST LOOKING ON THE WEBSITE. NO CONTACT WITH ANY AT ALL JUST LOOKED ON WEBSITE. WHEN I BOOKED THE TRIP IT SHOWED THAT IT TOOK OFF OF THE TOTAL FOR THE BOOKING. THEN I WAS CONTACTED BY THE ACTUAL PROPERTY COMPANY AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH VRBO. IF U ARE GOING TO BOOK GO TO THE ACTUAL PROPERTY COM[PANY SO U DO NOT GET RIPPED OFF LIKE I DID.
I AM REPORTING THIS COMPANY TO THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU
This people are legit crooks dont book here they cancel our family vacation despite me calling amd talking to them never am I doing bussineess here
Buyer beware! I booked a condo and I paid in FULL, approximately 30 days in advance. However, they took my money but did not provide me with accommodations. 5 days before my trip I realized they didn't tell me how to check in. I called and they informed me the condo owner booked the condo to someone else. I was left with nothing! Bad business practices!
Answer: There are many problems with listing with VRBO/HomeAway. The 1st is that it is the largest company of it's size. While that may mean that you get more exposure, you also have more competition for getting your listing seen. For example, your listing could be # 300 out of 2,000. Most people don't want to search that far to find what they want because they can usually find something else sooner. In order to get a higher listing, you must pay more. I pay the highest rates they have for my properties in TN # 191351, 189535, & 289723, i. E. over $1,500 each. Listing position is also based on a number of criteria which they mandate. We have no control over some of those criteria. For example, listing position is based on whether or not guests USE VRBO/HomeAway on line booking. Initially,. VRBO/HomeAway required that we OFFER on line booking in order to maximize our listing position, so I offered it. VRBO/HomeAway then changed their criteria & now guests must USE on line booking in order or my listing position drops. I have no control over whether or not they USE VRBO/HomeAway & I don't recommend it for several reasons (more on that if you're interested). Listing positions are also determined by the number & quality of reviews. Again, I have no control over whether or not someone writes a review nor how they rate a property. What may be a 5 Star for someone may only be a 3 Star for someone else, but I'm at their mercy to provide a review & to rate it well. There are many other factors that go into listing position. As I said, I try to maximize what I can & If I'm luck, my property will be listed around 50/200. I get much better response from FlipKey by TripAdvisor. As I mentioned, I pay VRBO/HomeAway over $1,500 for each property. I Pay FlipKey by TripAdvisor about $450/property for #'s 6588094, 2386143, & 3746421 & get much better results. The problem with FlipKey is that it's hard for someone to search for a specific property using the property #.
Answer: VRBO will not help anymore with anything. Homeaway bought them and there is no personal contact with owners anymore until they pay through the site. I don't know about negative reviews. Never see any. If there was a way to avoid VRBO and Someway I would do it; but they have the corner on the VACA rental market now.
Answer: I have the same problem. I don't think they have any.
Answer: Vrbo will NOT get involved in any way. They will not arbitrate on anyone's behalf. They are strictly an advertising website. Carefree travel insurance & all the other stuff is just to make renters feel more comfortable to rent. They hardly ever pay out if there is a real problem. You can sue in small claims court, in the city & state you rented in. The only defense you have is if you paid with a credit card to do a charge back, & even then its hard. You have to have documentation to prove you case. However, vrbo won't contest the chargeback if you can get your credit cad company to work with you. Best to leave a review that warns other renters to stay away. But vrbo approves the reviews before they are posted.
Answer: I have spoken with them so many times yesterday and today with no fix my problem. The number is 1-877-228-3145. I wish you better luck than I have had.
Answer: Absolutely nothing! Every change they make results in their making more money and owners making less. My bookings are down drastically. I would not sign up with VRBO.
Answer: Go with the standard listing if you have already paid. If not save your money and try homeescape.com. Homeaway/VRBO rolled out a new 9% service fee charged to your customers in addition to what you're already paying for. They did this without any warning to their customers. I found out after one of my repeat guests questioned the charge. I'm moving away from them and going with other options.
Answer: A: NEVER, EVER DEAL WITH ANY OWNERS OR PROPERTY MANAGERS THAT YOU HAVENT SPOKEN TO DIRECTLY. NEVER use any form of payment other than credit card. All CC's would refund you the money if you don't get the services. If they don't accept cards or allow payment through Homeaway, FIND ANOTHER PROPERTY OWNER WHO WILL or be prepared to take the chance. READ all reviews, if they don't have any you ARE taking a chance it's a scam or a dump (or a new property but be careful. NEVER make a large deposit EVER! VRBO has turned out to be reliable for us, never used Flipkey and AirBnB wouldn't use it - I want a large property not a room room share
Answer: Try airbnb to rent part of your home
Answer: Same issue for us. The house we rented had glowing reviews and when I tried to post an honest review it still has not been posted.
VRBO provides vacation rental listings by owner in the US and around the world.
