Having been a freelance photographer for over 3 decades and experiencing a lot, this is just another website where one can post snaps. The flurry of badges, contests and activities don't yield much at the non-paying level, so if you are interested in spending hundreds of dollars/year in hopes of winning a speed light, then have at it. My time is worth more than that. Also, one cannot enter 90% of the contests void of having a paid membership, which is messed up.

Hello Jim,

Thank you for spending the time to share your feedback with ViewBug! We are sorry to hear about the confusion regarding our membership levels. Like any other photo website, we do have paid membership options starting at $6.99/month and $59/year so members do not have to spend hundreds of dollars a year. Also, we usually offer special promotions to our members that helps them save anywhere from 15% to 35% on yearly memberships.

We currently have a total of 100 photo contests and 19 of them are Free contests which is almost 20% and you can confirm this information at http://www.viewbug.com/photo-contests. While most photo websites are not offering any Free contests at all, ViewBug members can submit photos to all of our Free contests and win prizes worth up to $2000. As a result, we have many happy Free ViewBug members.:-)

We’d be happy to learn more about how we could have improved your experience with us. Please feel free to contact our member support team via email at members@viewbug.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

Have a nice day!

A confusing mess
January 6, 2017

It looks to me like just another phony site to get people to join and then requires monthly payments to enter most contests. I won an award of some kind but there is no explanation of what it means. It all looks like a useless exercise. Who are these people with their mysterious algorithm. How about some explanation of what your site really does. I would think time would be better spent on flickr or 500px

Not a chance to win
February 21, 2024

I have been entering my photos in view Bug Contest for the last couple of years. I'm no louse when it comes to landscape photography. Some of my pictures are very very good. I have lost contests such as simple ones like image of the month two pictures that are no way near as good as mine. I I'm not trying to be conceited. There are many other photos that are just as good as mine that haven't won either.
Unless you're a professional photographer or pay for a yearly subscription You're not going to win It's frustrating and disheartening I have a ton of awards But they're all made up ones or pure Awards which are important Because being liked by a photographer is Probably the most important thing. It makes me not want you even try anymore as far as photo contests are concerned. I read review after review of people who are really good but, not professional or maybe don't subscribe to there yearly membership who agree 100% as far as there silly coins they are basically coupons. They had one good item it's supposedly been sold out for 2 years.

Thank you for sharing your feedback, Caryn. We're sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet your expectations. We aim for the best service, so we take this seriously. Contests are judged by various professional photographers, as well as, the people's choice which is selected by community members. We’d love the opportunity to have you join contests, and be rewarded in the process with different photography goodies, inspiration, and more exposure for your photos. We are always happy and ready to assist you at members@viewbug.com

Ripoff!
January 27, 2018

Viewbug have taken money from my account at least twice in the last year even though I have not bought or entered anything... these payments are for nearly £50 each time! I cannot see how to stop them or cancel membership which I have never consciously paid for! Anyone else have this problem? I have replied to emails but have had no response and another payment gone out in November. I never enter, upgrade or buy anything and want to cancel.

... Still have the free membership I had on joining! Sure they invite you to upgrade, and encourage you with eg possibilities of more entries into contests and other perks, but kind of expected that anyway. I enjoy entering their contests very much, and happy to say voted in the top 10 percent, 20 percent and 30 percent in a number of these. Also like browsing other members work, and learning more - you never stop learning with photography! Viewbug is fun!

Tired of the spam
May 11, 2021

Constantly getting emails saying I have a private message, only to find it's another spam message to sign up for a membership. The difference with these messages is there is no way to reply to them. Any other message in my inbox has a reply button. This shady practice has led me to delete an account with hundreds of photos and thousands of awards. Sick and tired of underhanded practices.

I have been a member for over two years now, I have not upgraded yet, but even as a member with a free membership, their support has been super helpful and treated me as if I was a paid member. The perks of having an account are great, as I can participate in free contests and create my own challenges. I also enjoy the community, as other photographers are willing to give you advice on your photos. Overall it has been a great experience.

Viewbug is an amazing site and it's free to join for photographers at any level. I've recently created an account and am still learning something new everyday. I personally love joining Contests and chatting with people in the community about photography. Everyone is very helpful and I've received a couple constructive feedback from some members already, plus I was just told by one of the members that I can create my own challenges You have the option to link your Facebook and Twitter accounts with your Viewbug account and share your photos with your friends and family. The site is very well designed and easy to navigate round as a user or a visitor.

Viewbug is an amazing site and user-friendly; you can import your photos from Facebook, Instagram, and Flickr easily. I was wondering if they'd have an app soon and was told by their customer service rep that the app is coming out this year which will be very convenient for us all. I can't wait. Oh, their customer service was very responsive and polite btw. Great place to meet others and discuss photography. I've been a member for over 8 months now and love it!

While I find the site OK and continue to visit and lightly participate, I find it generally a bit confusing to navigate, particularly the contest sites. Also I often find random pictures of mine submitted to free contests when I don't remember submitting them.

What I really want is true honest feedback about my photos. They don't provide how many "likes" or "votes" your photo gets in any contest, nor really where it RANKED at all (unless you win, I suppose). You have to shuffle through the thousands upon thousands of entries until you find yours to know where you rank. This is dumb. Why don't they just tell me? Is this a premium feature?

I've had an account for longer than I remember and the overall experience is great. Every site i've tried has its downs and so far, this is the one with the least. There's some ambiguity in their words, but everything is visible when searching for it. I was a paid member for a while and am thinking on paying again since I'm beginning to be active on photography once more.

I am so happy i found view bug. I have felt truly encouraged to not think of myself as totally useless at photography but been really received a lot of praise for my work which i was not sure i deserved. Its a friendly and easy to use site and whats more one can see all those amazing photos that others who are so gifted have taken. Anyone who is starting out in photography or is a professional will enjoy being a member of viewbug and i have absolutely nothing but praise for the very user friendly way it has been designed. Anyone complaining is to my mind not understanding its purpose.

Fun & Inspiring
October 17, 2016

I am a very amateur photographer that discovered this site by accident. I own no photo editing software. The most editing I ever do is perhaps a bit of cropping and some changes to black & white or sepia and creativity is not really my thing either. After looking at the images posted on this site I am quite certain I will never, ever even come close to winning a competition. However, once I got past this reality I discovered that it's fun just to post photos and see what people have to say. So, I will continue to enjoy the beautiful work of others and take whatever compliments come my way.

I've been a member for about 2 years now and thought it was time to write a good review to show my appreciation for all the hard work that ViewBug do.

I upgraded my account to Pro shortly after I joined the site to get the additional perks and I'm now addicted to it. ViewBug keeps coming up with new cool stuff and it never gets old. I enjoy teaching to other photographers and learning from them. I won a free Pro membership from one of the contests last year and hoping to win a bigger prize next time. I'm also in touch with a couple of winners who received their prizes and have been on the site for a while. I've learned a lot from the contests within this last 2 years and have tried different subjects and techniques since then. I highly recommend ViewBug.com if you love sharing your photos and meet fellow photographers.

Random
July 29, 2015

Plenty of photos to view. The "contests" seem somewhat odd--at least on first inspection. Level of buy-in is tagged to participation in most of the galleries. The available postings in some of the categories (contests) are very random or maybe its the oddly-cutesy titles... so what happens in "Faces and Places" is photos of cannons (from where?) appear with portraits (human, okay) and horses and dogs and insect heads and plants that might look like they have a human face! No rules, just "give-me-what-you-got."

I was a member of Viewbug for some time and it's a great place to see some awesome photos. The prizes for competitions are very good as well and I can see how people are enticed to enter. But if you view the entries, 99% of them are ultra-professional - staged, magazine-like entries from stock catalogues etc which are unlikely to be beaten by a photo that an average member would post. It has put me and many friends off entering as these photos always win.
The judging is also flawed, same winners and same type of photos. Very false and not a true reflection of the average audience who enter photo competitions. Good if you want to look at nice photos from a stock website/catalogue though!

Great place to network.
September 3, 2015

While I do feel that Viewbug could improve on browsing and social interaction on their site, fewer sites have the quality of images and opportunities to network with so many like-minded photographers. I have enjoyed my time there, and will continue for the foreseeable future. Once they get a handle on advertising their print shop, making browsing easier, and including more interactivity, this will be a amazing place to go!

Don't waste your time
September 30, 2014

I have been a member of this photo sharing site. They have many technical glitches and they never fix those. They are polite in their response but they can't fix anything. When I first joined it used to be good. Last couple years whatever changes they made has made it worse. It keeps getting worse. I became a pro member many years ago in order to post many photos. I can still do that. However, what they call Challenges (contests created by a member) have become ridiculous. Too many technical issues which they ignore. I am fed up with Viewbug. I am going to look for another community and quit Viewbug. It is not worth my money or time.

This site is actually a lot of fun, even for a professional. Art and photography are subjective, so this is by no means bible, its my point of view. I have seen some wonderful images on this site. Manipulation is part of photography and takes a lot of work to perfect, so for those of you that are complaining about these types of pics, learn the craft before you say its easy, or just a person clicking a button. Remember that its not the camera or how big your lens who takes great pictures, its the person using it.
I am a free member mostly to keep my social media aspect for my website. If I can have fun in the meantime, even better.

I just found this site, i happen to like it... "rigged" or not. I think its a good way for people to get their artwork out there to get it looked at, besides using flickr, Viewbug is pretty good, simple to use, and not too many bells and whistles... and as for the Redbubble statement. Redbubble is for selling your photos. Not just getting them viewed. If you have that much of a personal vendetta against viewbug i got an idea. How about just don't use it, say whats wrong with it. Where it goes wrong, what its good for, but don't make it seem so personal. Just makes you look like a twat.
