They won't let me return a college book I accidentally bought. It came up in my search as the book I was looking for so I assumed, by accident, that the book was the one I needed. I asked if I could return it because it was the wrong book (on my part) but they refused my return. Those books are EXPENSIVE and they have the audacity to recommend giving it away when I need the money to feed my kids. DO NOT BUY COLLEGE BOOKS FROM THIS COMPANY!
Have bought several books and the one thing that seems to be a common gripe. Is that sellers over rate their Books. My recent purchase said like new and when it arrived it had creases and dog eared pages. The copy of this book I checked out from the library was in significantly better condition. Don't mind paying a little bit more to get like new condition but I do mind when ThriftBooks over rates to sell books. Customer service in the past has also been pretty dismissive. Would recommend looking elsewhere for your used books.
I have ordered 5 books from them! Excellent priced, quick on shipping, and the books were in great shape! Where else can you buy 2 hardback for less than $10 & shipping under $4!
I've recommended this sight to several friends and will continue to shout their awesomeness!
Just received my book. Shipping was great, arrived a few days early. However, the condition of the book did not match the grading. The book was graded very good and there was some writing in the margins of several pages and underlining (with a purple marker). I would have graded the book as possibly good, but noted the writing and underlining.
I have bought literally hundreds of books from Thriftbooks and am almost always satisfied with the books and the purchasing experience. I've saved thousands of dollars buying books and DVDs from them. The condition of the used merchandise is almost always accurate as described, and on the 2 occasions when there was a problem, my money was refunded straightaway. As a bibliophile, I visit the site almost daily and enjoy the experience.
Only did one order with ThriftBooks but I got a book that would have cost me $200 on Amazon for $6. Good condition despite being over 20 years old, even signed by the author. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. Was initially skeptical based on the 2.5 stars they have here, maybe others are having far worse experiences
I bought two books from this site. One of them was a rare, out-of-print book that I've wanted badly for a while, so I was excited to find it on Thriftbooks. They only had one available copy. Unfortunately, when my package came, it was the wrong book (the extremely boring book pictured below). It was a completely random book that had nothing to do with what I ordered--not the same author, genre, or even the same language! I emailed them, hoping to return the wrong one and have them send me the correct book as a replacement. But they said they no longer had it available, so they wanted me to just keep the wrong book and refunded me instead. Clearly, they sent my valuable book to someone else, and they didn't want to do anything to rectify that. It was so disappointing to get my hopes up that I would be getting a book I'd been searching a long time for, only to find out it was the wrong one.
In the same order, I bought a copy of the Lord of the Rings. I bought it with the understanding that I'd be getting the cover design that was pictured (as there were many covers to choose from, and I chose the cover I liked best). It came with a different cover. They don't disclose this upfront, but when you read their help section, it says that the pictures displayed for the books may not be the actual book they send. It's not the biggest issue in the world, but they do need to be more forthcoming about that when you order.
This was my first time ordering through Thriftbooks, and neither books came as I expected. The shipping time was also pretty long. Disappointed.
I ordered a copy of Thomas More's "Utopia" and Got "Hamsters for dummies." Probably not using Thriftbooks again.
Fast service I have always been happy with the books I bought and I would reccomend thriftbooks to anyone
I ordered a book called The Brief and Wonderous life of Oscar Tao for my English class. The cover of the book in the picture was written in English. The name of the book before, during, and after purchase was in English. I paid extra for expedited shipping. I received the book almost three weeks later and it was in SPANISH. I contacted thriftbooks via email only to be told that it was listed as in Spanish (NEVER POSTED ANYWHERE BEFORE OR AFTER PURCHASE) and that I couldn't return or exchange it. Complete waste of money and time! If I could give zero stars, I would. And the icing on the cake? When I check my order history on the website the picture of the book shows up with an English cover for about two seconds before the picture randomly changes to a Spanish cover... Definitely some shady crap going on with this site!
Beware! They scam every non-American who orders though their website by charging an illegal sales tax.
I just received an older paperback that is fairly rare and when a tried to remove the Thriftbooks sticker, it began to peel off the spine of the book. This is terrible because now the sticker must remain forever on the spine of the book so that the book is not completely ruined. Can't buy from this company anymore because of this policy of placing their stickers on spines of older paperbacks and ruining them! If they would stop this practice, I would continue buying from them because their service is fine.
I bought a book that was listed as like new. When it arrive it had a very small tear in the dust jacket. Since I had a time issue and the tear was minor - and the price was very good even for a lower condition book, I was fine with it. I mentioned it in my review and gave them an average rating. Their follow up to address the problem was amazing. I would readily recommend them to anyone for their pricing, quick delivery, and care of customers if a problem arises.
Make sure you open any DVD you order the minute you get them because I was sent the wrong DVD in the right case and because I didn't open it for over 30 days they won't do anything about it.
Every since I started using my credit cards on this site, I have notice extra charges appearing on my cards. So please keep a eye on those credit cards and charges.
I ordered used jigsaw puzzle books for my kids... there were no puzzle pieces EXCEPT for one puzzle that was glued to the book.
Absolutely unacceptable!
My kids are so disappointed
I first started using Thriftbooks as a college student in 2015 as recommended by a friend. This service saved me thousands of dollars in textbook costs and now as an avid book reader/hoarder. Yes, the books are secondhand and they need a little bit more TLC than others but I have never had a problem with the books I've received. A book with wears and tears is a book that has been well-loved! I am very grateful for Thriftbooks and the stellar service they have provided me for the past seven years!
I've ordered twice now from Canada. Books arrived earlier than expected, and in the condition promised. Unique titles of spiritual books that I can't get at our libraries and have to pay top dollar for at specialized stores. I'll keep ordering and hopefully won't have a negative experience like some have reviewed.
I have placed a few orders with this company. Each time, delivery has been speedy and sustainable. Plus, they have a great mission.
Answer: It sounds like a question you need to ask them directly.
Answer: You should think twice before paying international postal rates and customs fees for used books.
Answer: When this happens, just tell them and they'll give you a refund. Books are sent via USPS, so good luck with a tracking number. Very occasionally they will lose a shipment, and this is not Thriftbooks' fault.
Answer: Library Binding is a term used for books that are in large print.
Answer: I donate my books to the library for their book sale
Answer: I ordered through the ThriftBooks website. They send me an order confirmation email. Then they send me shipping confirmation email with tracking. Shipping confirmation emails may be sent separately for each book if they come from different locations. If you keep track of the emails, you know exactly what the situation is for your order. I have ordered over 30 books, have check on the status often, and had no problems. I'm not sure what happens if you don't have email, but is that a possibility in this day and age? If you ordered by phone, I'm not sure why you didn't call them for the status.
Answer: They do not accept checks or money orders. You need to use credit, debit (cards), or PayPal.
