“A world of content at your fingertips”

Angela W.
12/15/22

I have been a subscriber for years and always find something new to read or listen to. Scribd has probably saved me thousands of pounds on books over the years and hours waiting for them to turn up in my local library. I like that I can dip into anything I fancy and then wander off onto something else if I don't find it engaging without the clutter and commitment of having to pay for a physical item. It's perfect for someone like me with adhd and a wandering inquisitive mind.

“Eleven months after my "free trial" subscription, this scam site hit my card.”

Dennie K.
12/11/23

Eleven months after my "free trial" subscription, which this scammers hit my card. They don't have phone support, so you must go through their email to inform them of erroneous charges. They wrote back and requested a ridiculous amount of info in ordder for you to get a refund. Each subsequent email I received from them was from a different person, yet the reply address was always the same - "*******@scribd.com". I contacted my bank with the proof of cancellation and filed a dispute with VISA, who found in my favor and refunded me. However be advised that if you file a dispute like this, VISA must issue you a new card. I did one better on this and I filed a complaint with the FTC, as I think that not only are they low-life scammers for this practice - which apparently is a common occurence, but they are also guilty of copyright infringment for selling access to copyrighted material.

Scribd advertises "unlimited" access to materials. What they don't tll you is that once you pass some unpublished limit, for instance, two bestsellers per month, your access to many of the most popular titles is greatly diminished-- a process known as "throttling". Once throttling kicks in, you can still read and listen to materials, but many of the books you've saved will become unavailable til your next billing date. I didn't know this going in and when I found out I was annoyed, but also kind of get it. The advertising is deceptive, but for me, $10 for for 2 audiobooks is still a good deal. A couple months ago, I started getting throttled not just between books, but while I was in the middle of reading a book. I'd be halfway done, and the next time I opened the app the book was gone and I could not find it by searching. The first time it happened I thought it was some weird glitch or maybe I'd missed the notice that the book was leaving the site. The second time it happened I was more suspicious, did a little digging and realized that if I checked on the site for the book when I wasn't logged in, the book showed up just fine. That's a sure sign of throttling and that was the end for me. If I can't count on finishing a book I started due to throttling, I'm out.

Hi Daisy, we're sorry for the confusion and would be happy to better clarify your experience! To clarify, we do not limit the number of books you can read, so there is not a specific amount of books you are allowed a month. As you read with Scribd, our library rotates and revolves to cycle out the content. Authors, genre, and primarily the publishers of the books, to name a few. In short, the type of content being read can affect future content availability. This is not permanent unavailability, rather a rotating catalog.

Scribd's system was designed in the anticipation that folks would browse more like a library, and choose things as you finish one title and move on to the next, in which instance any title rotations appear more seamlessly. We certainly understand that different readers have different reading habits, and the title rotations may present a particularly unexpected experience for folks who like to plan out their month's reading at once. We do our best to ensure the most availability possible, throughout your subscription.

As our team works to help Scribd readers make the most of their subscriptions, your feedback truly helps us clarify our membership offerings for everyone. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns by reaching out to our support team at help@scribd.com - thanks!

So, a year ago (11/15/2018), I subscribed to the Scribd free membership trial. Then I signed the one-year membership and I used it during the year. Although I was not planning to renew the subscription, then today (11/15/2019) the site renewed it without any notification, I was not asked if I wanted to continue or informed just before this happened, that it was about to happen. There was no warning. I would have canceled my membership immediately before the amount could have been deducted from my account. The money has been deducted from my account without my explicit and express permission. Since I don't want to use Scribd services, that begins today (11/15/2019), I have spent a few hours trying to get a refund by contacting Scribd support, but every time I press the link on the page, I get a notification telling me that I must verify my account by activating the link Scribd has sent to my registered email account, which I will receive at most within ten minutes. I have pressed the resend button multiple times and gotten no link. I have not used Scribd's services in the past months and I don't want to use it anymore. So, please, I want my money back.

They don't have phone customer service. And when you cancel, in very small prime, they have the words complete cancellation after you already have pressed that button on two other pages. So you keep getting charged and you can't get out of it. It's corrupt and I want better from them.

Two days after I signed up, all the books I had saved became unavailable. I listened to five books in a two day span, each book had an approximate duration of four hours. Now those books are only available to me after the next billing date. So for the next 28 days I'm suppose to read stuff I'm not interested in, or that I've read before. Almost every title I search for is available on 06-16-2023. I signed up on 05-16-2023, all books I search for became unavailable on 05-18-23.

I have been with Scribd for over 3 years now. I have stuck to them through many changes. They advertise unlimited* audio books, that * means it's not unlimited at all. If you listen to "too many" they will throttle you. I have listen to three books before they shortened my selection to a few slightly unpopular books. When I listen to those, they will reduce it even further, until all you have left is the Mueller report. I reached out to them for a solution to this problem, maybe they can offer an actual premium membership that costs a bit more and not throttle members to such extent. Instead of working with me, they cancelled my membership for me! They just shut me out! Terrible!

Decided to turn to this website after several tickets on the Scribd website with no response still. I had a payment taken on the 23/5 through Paypal, my account still says I am a non member and can not continue to read any of the books I want to. I think they were better off with the credit system. With this "so called" *unlimited model, after consuming just a couple of audiobooks you are left with a very paltry selection of content of either librovox style recordings or other types of uninteresting titles until the renewal of your next billing cycle. I can understand the need for a business to turn a profit, but you need to be clear on how many books from certain publishers you can access before you are cut off from the good content. Now choosing an audiobook from Scribd is kind of like walking on eggshells because I have to be careful which books may or may not set off the algorithm that will limit your selections. It's my understanding that they refuse to be clear on this. They pretty much just come back with canned responses to anybody who contacts them to complain.
I have come to find that my local library has a great wealth of content that is ready available which can tide me over until I can access the best selling titles on the wait list. If on a rare occasion there is something that I have an absolute urge to read now, I can always just purchase it on Google play. I think that may be more cost effective than paying $9 a month for a service that doesn't really deliver what it claims to.
I would come back to Scribd if they would either
A) Make the service TRULY unlimited (even if I had to pay a little more) or
B) Clarify which content and the quantity of that content that can be consumed in a month, so that one can plan accordingly.
I don't get how this works, it's too confusing and seemingly arbitrary.

This site offers a lot of books and audiobooks for around $10.00 per month. However, in other categories it is mostly input from fellow users so you'll find several instances of poorly uploaded material. I am mainly giving them 2 stars because of their very poor customer service. After having a subscription for over a year, I went in to renew my credit card information (my card was about to expire) and before I could do so, they had frozen my account. When I inquired about what had happened, I received an email saying I had made a fraudulent claim against them which was totally false. When I addressed this, I received no response. I emailed again and nothing. Finally, after not contacting me following my inquiries, they deleted my account. So, there's some good stuff here but don't expect much from the company itself.

I have had a membership with Scribd for 7 months... I noticed about 4 months ago that the last week before my monthly payment is due, every audiobook I have saved is suddenly not available- until the day AFTER my payment is due. This has happened every month! They claim that there is no limit to the books and audiobooks that there members can read / listen to, but obviously there must be. This has happened every month and not only my saved audiobooks and also any audiobooks from any of the series that I read are suddenly not available, but also all titles that use the "Search" option for are not available either.
The only way to contact customer service is by email- which I did. They responded with an email saying that it would be 2 weeks or more until they would get to my complaint.
When I reread their terms, etc., they just make a general statement about availability. It is so obvious that this dishonest practice of making everything unavailable the last week before my payment is due is intentional. It is so obvious, especially since my selections become available as soon as the next payment is made. It's not like this happened once or twice, it happens like clockwork EVERY MONTH. This is horrible and dishonest!

Tip for consumers:
Be aware of their "availability" issue.

I'm very disappointed with Scribd. I liked the product, but the billing service is terrible. Even I wasn't login much for the past year, but decided stay on the autopay. Until last week, I found out that I was double charged for 8 months. They looked into it and said that I have two accounts. Apparently, one time, I entered a different e-mail address. There you go, they signed me up for it! Okay, I'm not going to dig further as why I was signed up again without knowing. I just wanted the refund for the double charged portion. They did refund me, but only for 6 months. When I requested for the remainder 2 months refund, there was no response. Basically they forced me to cancel my membership. Now, I'm concerned that they may continue charge me even after the cancellation. It's really too bad because I was going to continue keep them even though I've not use the service much lately. I will consider getting the subscription in the future if they can resolve this matter now.

This service has about 70% less books than Audible plus the books they do have skip and or pause throughout the books. I have contacted Scribd 3 times trying to get them to address the problem. It took 2 weeks for them to respond to my first contact saying they're happy to say the problem had been fixed. I contacted them back telling them the problem has not been fixed. I contacted them again recently because I had not heard back from them. As of today I have still not heard back from them and the issue persists. I could understand if it was one book Or if it was just once or twice per book but it isn't. It's every book, every chapter. I've even tried deleting the app and downloading it again. That didn't fix it either.

Scribd is definitely a scam. I tried several times to cancel effective 3-14--21 and they ignored my request and charged my PayPal account. I have tried several times to get them to refund my $10.71. They have ignored mt requests for my refund several times. I am going to challenge this on PayPal.

Its a shame that a company that offers a good product and even after advertising you can cancel anytime but refuses to honor that and still charges people abd refuses to issue a refund.

Please be safe and don't subscribe to this fradulent company. I doubt that the authorities know they are "sharing" copywriters books. They should be shut down.

Good enough product but terribly unimpressed with their customer service or should I say they have no customer service. Abd they lie about their refund policy.

Like many others I was charged for a monthly subscription after cancelling. I did however contact their customer support and they resolved the issue in a timely manner and refunded the money. I would suggest Scribd review their cancel subscription flow on the website to make it an easier one step process, and they should send monthly emails upon charging the account also and to confirm cancellation. I initially signed up for this service because they had some content I was looking for that was hard to find elsewhere. Would give this 5 stars if not for the issue with overcharging and being sneaky. Mixed feelings overall.

I figured, after few years of being the member, that once you stop being a member you loose all the books you have read before. Basically, if you want to have an access to the books they give you, you have to keep purchasing the membership. You are paying access to the books, not books. Even the ones I bought for extra money, not for the credits I have received as a member, were taken away from me. I figured if I bought one book a month, I'd have them now, then them giving me three that I have only as long as I am paying. Kinda not fair.

Seriously! I was a long time subscriber until you guys went to the limited number of books per month. When you returned to "unlimited" version, I tried you again, but it wasnt worth it. When I tried to unsubscribe, I thought I did, but you charged me!

Then I recently noticed that there is a small continue button almost hidden and then multiple additional pages I had to continue through.

Why not make it simple to unsubscribe instead of making all your ex customers pissed off?

That is a HORRIBLE business policy!

Update: After many emails Scribd finally refunded the money, but the company STILL needs to make unsubscribing more transparent!

Tip for consumers:
Better than Kindle Unlimited but if your local library has online lending, it is totally unnecessary.
