The company's reputation is significantly marred by widespread customer dissatisfaction, particularly concerning its subscription model and customer service. Many users report unauthorized charges, difficulties in canceling subscriptions, and a lack of responsive support, leading to perceptions of deceptive practices. While some customers acknowledge the potential value of the service for avid readers, these positives are overshadowed by frustrations with the platform's functionality and the quality of customer interactions. Overall, the feedback indicates a pressing need for improved communication and more transparent billing practices to restore customer trust.

I'm surprised that such a well known company do this! I cancelled membership and still got charged! Emailed them a lot of times, still no reply! No receipt or notification when charged. I NEED A PROPER RESPONSE! Worst experience ever!
I was of the opinion that it was 8.99$ per month. Billed 87$... trying for days to get a response... i live way in the Caribbean... value of 86USD IS 650$ in my currrncy. Not a response from these ppl. Tried contacting since 10th... today is 14th... avoid this site at any cost
Purchased 2 books as pdf.
Both were missing the majority of the pages.
Online help was useless and comical at best.
I was excited when I found Sribd. Unlimited audiobooks for loan - the Netflix model. Terrific - I paid for a year. Unlike Audible, I wasn't buying the book so I could try it and if I didn't like it, I could just pick another- FABULOUS... except - the app is nothing but one glitch after the next. It loads slowly, doesn't bookmark well - endless problems. Then I receive a notice about changing to book credits (like Audible, but I won't own the book). If they need to change their terms of use then it needs to go into effect AFTER the year I paid for is expired. This is basic to contracts. Don't waste your money. It's a dishonest company.
I was supposed to have a free trial until September 14th, so of course I was surprised whenever I had a charge on my account on the 7th. These people are so dirty and there is not a bit of contact information. I think it is just one huge scam. Of course I can't get a real live human to email me back about my issue. I am reporting them to every agency and organization I can, and I suggest everyone else that's been screwed over does the same. I have no idea how this joke of a company still exists and the people who run it haven't wound up in jail yet. What a load of crap.
Hi Erica, I'm so sorry for any confusion here. What you received was a pending verification charge. It's not an actual charge; the system does a transaction to verify that the card used is valid but it's automatically voided when it occurs so the money will never process out of your account. It should be listed on your account a few days as "pending" and then disappear as if it never happened; the exact timeframe on when it disappears will depend on your bank however. It is just a method used to verify that the card provided at sign up is valid so the service can be successfully added to your account. I apologize for any trouble it's caused for you! If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to email us at help@scribd.com. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
I joined on the basis of a book they claimed to have which was quite rare.
They didn't actually have so I tried many times to cancel membership. I then tried to delete membership and was told I could not on the basis of having an active membership. I though having it cancelled would be enough.
However, months later I was charged $71 on my paypal for yearly membership. I initiated an unauthorised complaint with paypal. I went to scribd tried to cancel subscription yet again and delete membership. Same result as before.
I then complained to scribd on their customer service page only to then find it case closed with no communication with me whatsoever. I went back to paypal to find they tried to charge me again. Fortunately this time paypal blocked it.
I have initiated more complaints on their customer service page requesting a refund. I am waiting for paypal to resolve an unauthorised payment/fraud complaint to see if I can get my money back there.
This is a scam operation with dishonest business practices, traps to prevent one leaving and, essentially practices fraud, charging more than once for the same subscription I did not want anyway and advertising books it does not actually have. (I think it has a system on google where it directs you there for book searches regardless of whether they actually have it.)
Stay away at all costs!
Update: Paypal found in my favour and I have now been refunded.
I subscribed to a $47.99 membership August 31, I cancelled in the same day and haven't received any refunds or emails back. My help desk requests say "solved", but what does that mean? I sent multiple emails and no replies back. I want my $47.99 back.bi wouldn't recommend scribd to no one. This is ridiculous.
Hi Jaylynn, I'm so glad to see that this has been resolved by my colleague April. If you have any other questions or concerns, please reach out to us at help@scribd.com. Thanks again! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
Purchased a yearly subscription and was charged twice to my PayPal back to back months. Maybe I misunderstood the cost of a subscription and how I would be charged, but even so... six days and no response from anyone on their support team about the issue? This is terrible customer service. Steer clear of this site.
As all the others who have reviewed here, my experience is that this is a string-you-along business that just relies on the fact that people will run out of steam. They promise a response in 6 hours. It has been 48. Still no response. The book that they claimed to have they in fact only had a few pages of. So I demanded to cancel. Crickets. If this is the business model, stay far far away.
I was billed twice in one month. I have sent multiple emails including screenshots but am yet to get a response from scribd. I subscribed using with paypal on their mobile site but it did not reflect on my android app. Entered my credit card info and got billed again with my plan showing it will expire in a month instead of two months. Very poor customer service.
Hi there! I'm so sorry for the difficulty here. It looks like my colleague Nikki has been in touch with you regarding this issue. If you have any further questions, please refer to ticket #913148. Thanks!
Emailed and didn't get a response from their customer support, they don't seem to want to uphold their refund policy.

I signed up for a 14 day trial and canceled on that day. I was charged 89 dollars a few days later. There isn't a number for customer service. We will see how honest they are and if I get my money back.
They emailed me back and gave me a full refund. I was pleased with the way they handled their error.
I decided to cancel after 3 weeks and I have still not gotten my account credited. Why is there no customer service contact number?!?!?
Hi Jeevan! It looks like my colleague Gary was able to refund that charge for you on August 21st. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to email us at help@scribd.com. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
If you try to cancel your account you only get this answer:
"You have an active membership to Scribd. Before you can delete your account, you must cancel your membership."
And they will try to charge you forever.
It will be easy for you to cancel your credit card, that try to cancel your account with them.
Hi there! So sorry for any confusion here. To delete your Scribd account, you do need to cancel your active subscription first. We're happy to help with this if you were still experiencing trouble! Just email us at help@scribd.com. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support
For such a well known company it is quite unfortunate that this occurs. Like several others I did not expect to be billed once I cancelled my trial period. This is false advertising and unacceptable.

Do not use... Tried cancelling my subscription 3 months ago and continue to get charged with no responses to my multiple emails. Will have to cancel my debit card as well. Never even used it, just a big headache...

Scribd.com has a very shady way of dealing with charging and refunding. I would be very wary of them. Poor customer service, no responses to emails.
Why am I not getting my refund for unused premium, when I didn't use it? No one will answer my emails. I feel ripped off. I've sent multiple emails and NO RESPONSE.

I had signed up for a free trial and then $3.99 per month offer. After the free trial ended my account was charged $87.00. I emailed and have received no response. I'm going to have to go through my credit union and dispute the charge and then cancel my debit card. This is ridiculous. I need my money
Hi Jayla! I'm so glad we were able to resolve this issue and get that charge refunded for you. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us via support@scribd.com. Thanks again! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Service
Can't log in to scribd account and nobody replies to the emails I send, I'm still in my 30 trial days but if no one is responding to emails I'm going to be billed for something I can't use... I

I have now had the account sort by customer services, it took a while to get someone to answer me but they were very quick to resolve my problem which I can not grumble at. Perhaps this company is perhaps a victim of its own success and hasn't the manpower to cover a good working customer service as we would expect to see.
Hi Dan! I'm so glad to hear that your issue was resolved. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us at support@scribd.com should you have any questions in the future. Thanks again! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Service
I am disputing with my bank. I canceled my subscription on May 25, which was resolved and closed on May 27th. It should've ended on June 18th. I was charged AGAIN on June 19th. I'm having to get a new bank card in order to keep this from happening again. I was considering coming back, but no longer.
