Scribd Reviews Summary

The company's reputation is significantly marred by widespread customer dissatisfaction, particularly concerning its subscription model and customer service. Many users report unauthorized charges, difficulties in canceling subscriptions, and a lack of responsive support, leading to perceptions of deceptive practices. While some customers acknowledge the potential value of the service for avid readers, these positives are overshadowed by frustrations with the platform's functionality and the quality of customer interactions. Overall, the feedback indicates a pressing need for improved communication and more transparent billing practices to restore customer trust.

Joined on 20 January for 14 day free membership. On that day usd 8.99 was removed form my credit card. I emailed your office to cancel my membership as I joined to read a book- Just listen by sarah dessen and after the money was deducted from my credit card, I found that the book was suddenly unavailable to download.

Now, today, money was again deducted from my account-usd 8.99

Please urgently cancel and refund amounts due to me

Hi there! The charge from January 20,2016 was simply a verification process that ensures your payment method is valid. It is voided automatically and the funds never process out of your account. It does look like your subscription remained active following that free trial, which is why you were charged for the monthly subscription on February 9,2016. We've issued a refund for this charge and have canceled your subscription. We've also sent a reply on your ticket #1028173. Please do let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. Mixed feelings
February 5, 2016

This site charged me twice for a 'free' trial.
They have responded and said that it was just a checking mechanism they have, but I still don't know, the charges have still not be cleared up, so I'm going to wait and update this review if anything changes.
But maybe they should mention this when we are signing up or in the terms and conditions so that it's not such a shock.
Whatever their procedure maybe, they should at least clearly mention this so that new customers aren't intimidated when they sign up.

I signed up for the 14 day trial, and cancelled it two days later when I found that the only book I need is not in a citable format on scribd. Still, I found myself being charged with $8.99. I can explain what kind of "free" is in scribd's crooked dictionary? I hope everyone stay away from this stupid site!

Hi Allen, I'm so sorry for the misunderstanding! It's not an actual charge; the system does a transaction to verify that the card used is valid but it's automatically voided when it occurs so the money will never process out of your account. It should be listed on your account a few days as "pending" and then disappear as if it never happened; the exact timeframe on when it disappears will depend on your bank however. It is just a method used to verify that the card provided at sign up is valid so the service can be successfully added to your account. I apologize for any trouble it's caused for you! If you aren't seeing that charge fall off after 5 business days, please email us at help@scribd.com and we can take a look. Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support

I signed up for the Scribd "Free Trial" in order to download a single item... a bicycle repair manual that I could not find anywhere else on the web. It was a one-time scenario, a one-month trial. I discovered that they have continued to bill me for the past 8 MONTHS. I sent numerous messages to their "say hello" contact email and did not receive a response.
I repeatedly went through their cancellation process (endless deceptive click-throughs on endless pages) only to find out that the account had not been properly terminated. Finally received an email from a rep who said, according to their company policy they would refund the most recent bill (this after I sent several emails to say I did not want another payment going through). Still waiting to see if they refund the single month. WHAT I'D REALLY LIKE IS AN 8-MONTH REFUND! This is the WORST company I've ever dealt with online. Terrible Customer service. And, I've never seen anything like their cancellation procedure. AWFUL!

STAY AWAY
January 7, 2016

DO not engage in business with this site! I cancelled my account with them MONTHS ago and just found out that they have continued charging me for this service. There is no customer service number (seriously, what legitimate business doesn't even give you a number to call and complain?) and their customer service reps obviously simply do not respond to support requests. Stay away!

SCAM AND SPAM - Be Warned
December 28, 2015

Be really wary about Scribd. I had to be very forceful in cancelling my one-month subscription. In order to cancel you have to keep clicking through page after page of them trying to weasel out of cancelling. Then - once you have forced them to cancel they will not even email confirmation of cancellation. Instead, they keep emailing unwanted and illegal spams about staying with Scribd.

Also - they have very very very few books available

SOLD OVER $200 OF UPLOADED STUDY MATERIAL. SCRIBD CLOSED MY ACCOUNT AFTER THE SALE AND KEPT THE MONEY FOR THEMSELVES. I WAS SUPPOSED TO RECEIVE $184.00 FOR THE MATERIAL THAT WERE PURCHASED. THE BUYER WAS NOT REFUNDED. RIPOFF, SCAM ARTIST AND TOTAL FRAUD. DO NOT SUBSCRIBE, UPLOAD, OR EVEN VISIT THEIR SITE. I GUESS I HAVE TO CLICK 1 STAR TO POST THIS, BUT "BELOW ZERO" WOULD BE MORE ACCURATE. JASON@ CUSTOMERS SERVICE IS "LOOKING INTO IT" SHOULD HEAR BACK SOMETIME AROUND "NEVER", LOL.

This organization is dishonest. I signed up for trial membership and cancel within 2 weeks. They continued charging my credit card for 7 months (overlooked to check). They do not respect cancellation. Just do not give your credit card to this outfit.

They changed from $8/mo to $8/book. But when you cancel you can't read any of the books you've already paid for like you can with audible. I've already paid for those books, it's not right for you to force me to keep being charged to read what I've already paid for. Besides if you change the rules after customers have already signed up this deceitful... You should find s better way of transitioning.

Really disappointed
October 13, 2015

I loved the Netflix type format. Pay a subscription, get unlimited books.
Until now.
Now I get 2 books (credits), and I have to pay for anything after that.
So now it's like Audible. I'm giving 2 instead of 1 stars because the books are still cheaper than Audible's.

A month after I signed up & agreed to pay $8.99/mo... They changed the rules from $8.99 per mo. To $8.95 per BOOK! Anyone who even considers signing up w/ scribd... Instead, do what I am now doing. Apply online for a library card on your local County Library Website & read and/or listen to as many Ebooks/Audiobooks as you want per month for FREE. You don't even have to go to the library... It's all done online. Why pay scribd for a service that your County Library offers for FREE. I wish someone had told me about the Public Library's FREE Ebook/Audiobook Service BEFORE I got hooked up with those Scribd crooks!

Audiobooks
September 30, 2015

I go through about 10 audiobooks a month so you can see why I was a huge fan of scribd from the start. Finally a place to get audiobooks for a low price! Audible fee is crazy and you only get a few credits each month. So now to my astonishment, Scribd has moved away from subscription audiobooks. Yeah there are some that are still included in the subscription but it's a crappy selection. If I have to pay for each audiobook, it's not really a subscription in my opinion. 1 credit is laughable. I will most likely be canceling the membership very soon and just stick with amazon unlimited. Looks like canceling may be a laborious process based on the reviews I've seen here. Yay.

On another note, the search function and organization of content is wonky. It would be nice to see all the books in a series in order from the first book to the last as well. I haven't had any issues with actual books and using the app, so that's something.

THEY ARE FRAUD!
September 28, 2015

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have taken a scribd account by taking a free trail initially and after that I was supposed to be moved to 8.99$ monthly recurring plan. I would bring to the notice that I had been charged each month for the same till September. Now in September I decided to discontinue the service and so I disabled my plan. But I was deducted once on 26th September, 2015 for this month and again on 28th September, 2015. I am attaching the screenshots for the same.

Please let me know why these two deductions are made in same month. Also before deducting the amount for each month you have not even notified me through mail. I came to know about the deductions of each month by going through my bank account statements. This is highly inconvenient and unacceptable.

I do not wish to continue such service. Delete my account and also refund me the money ASAP which has been deducted twice.

Thanks,
Abhishek

Hard to know where to start. Crashes repeatedly, can't actually synch between devices most of the time, sometimes can't access books in my library. Today takes the cake: the point of downloading to my device is to be able to read where there is no internet. I am without internet, Scribd suddenly decides my downloaded books have never been downloaded and are not available. It was a long 2 hours staring at a wall with nothing to read. The moment I'm home, everything is Ok again. I really hate these people. Checking into other services.

I heard about this service and thought it was a fun concept, so I signed up for a 14-day trial to give it a shot. After putting all my information in to the account, I immediately went to the cancel membership section, so I wouldn't be charged after the trial was up.

After the trial period, I noticed that my account was in fact charged for a month of service. I went back to see why this happened. It turns out that to cancel is a very annoying process. Once you hit cancel account, it takes you to a page that says "This doesn't have to be the end". I must have assumed hitting the cancel button was all you needed to do the first time, so I missed this. After I "confirmed" the cancellation, I was taken to another page pushing me to stay with the service. I again told it to cancel, to which it took me to a page that offered me a 30-day trial. I once again hit cancel and it took me to a page that asked me to give it feedback for leaving. (There were still a bunch of other headers and buttons that encouraged you not to leave). I filled out the feedback explaining that the cancellation process was obnoxious and that I wanted my money back. I assumed this would indeed be the last page to cancel the service. WRONG! I was then taken to another page that gave me four or five buttons to stay, and one small button to finalize the cancellation that was very hard to find.

I wanted to give them a 1-star review for this. But I decided to cut them a break and give them 2-stars for a couple of reasons. The first simply because it is a good service. I wanted to do the trial because they have a large comic book library, and I was able to read a lot of graphic novels that I would otherwise have to pay $30 each for at a store.

The other reason being that despite the obnoxious cancellation process, I was given a response to my feedback within an hour and my money refunded.

If you are willing to subscribe to the service, I think it is worth the money. But like many of the reviews on this page, there is something very untrustworthy about this company, and I don't think I will be giving them my business in the future.
