Scribd got away with charging my credit card for 5 months before I noticed it. Luckily the credit card company was able to get Scribd to refund my money. The problem is I never signed up for their service in the first place. Company like this make millions off charging unsuspecting people.
It seems that we buy something on one website not knowing that it has a sister company that will take our credit card information and charge us for services we never ordered. The most common trick is when we go to checkout and buy our merchandise, in the checkout area the company has a box pre-checked with small print next to it tricking us into signing up for something we don't need or want. I'm so tired of these scams on unsuspecting consumers. There needs to be a detailed Federal Regulations preventing this type of consumer scam by companies. I remember years ago T-mobile did the same thing to me; adding charges for things I never ordered. Because of what they did to me I now use prepaid service for my family through Total Wireless. This way I can avoid fraudulent charges since it is a paid in advance service. Scribd Inc is just another rip off corporation scamming innocent consumers.
I sign up occasionally for a month at a time. This time though, I recieved an email that I would be charged for the next month on July 10th. So on July 9th I went in to cancel my account and found they had already extended my membership for next month and charged me. I sent them an email complaining and my next step will be to do a chargeback with my credit card, but they've obviously resorted to dirty practices by doing this. I won't be signing up again.
Hi Tom - I'm so sorry to hear this. Most likely, it was a time zone difference which caused the confusion. Please rely to this review with your ticket number and we can absolutely issue a refund.
Yesterday I registered for the trial period and entered my card details and the next thing I see in my bank statement is that the money has been debited, I have now cancelled the free trial period and I want my money back as soon as possible.
Hi Trilochan! We've just replied to your support ticket, but I'm providing this information here for you as well. I'm so sorry for the misunderstanding! It's not an actual charge; the system does a transaction to verify that the card used is valid but it's automatically voided when it occurs so the money will never process out of your account. It should be listed on your account a few days as "pending" and then disappear as if it never happened; the exact timeframe on when it disappears will depend on your bank however. It is just a method used to verify that the card provided at sign up is valid so the service can be successfully added to your account. I apologize for any trouble it's caused for you! Thanks! - Zoë, Scribd Customer Support.
So angry. No way to contact this company. Had two accounts. Due to someone stealing bank card i had a hoks on it. Plan was paid for by due date. Now lubrary gone on both accounts. Trying to reach for days now. I did love the company, but they hwve let me down. Dont use themm you will lose all saved books, and the acct dissapears. Yet i was still bill 9.99 twice this month for service.
Thank you for reaching out to us here and we apologize for the trouble here with reaching support! We have a major backlog of tickets, which is delaying our support response times. However, so we can escalate your ticket, please be sure to update here with your ticket number and we'll get back to you ASAP to help you.
I think they were better off with the credit system. With this "so called" *unlimited model, after consuming just a couple of audiobooks you are left with a very paltry selection of content of either librovox style recordings or other types of uninteresting titles until the renewal of your next billing cycle. I can understand the need for a business to turn a profit, but you need to be clear on how many books from certain publishers you can access before you are cut off from the good content. Now choosing an audiobook from Scribd is kind of like walking on eggshells because I have to be careful which books may or may not set off the algorithm that will limit your selections. It's my understanding that they refuse to be clear on this. They pretty much just come back with canned responses to anybody who contacts them to complain.
I have come to find that my local library has a great wealth of content that is ready available which can tide me over until I can access the best selling titles on the wait list. If on a rare occasion there is something that I have an absolute urge to read now, I can always just purchase it on Google play. I think that may be more cost effective than paying $9 a month for a service that doesn't really deliver what it claims to.
I would come back to Scribd if they would either
A) Make the service TRULY unlimited (even if I had to pay a little more) or
B) Clarify which content and the quantity of that content that can be consumed in a month, so that one can plan accordingly.
I don't get how this works, it's too confusing and seemingly arbitrary.
Hi, I'm Niranjana (Niren) Upreti. I signed up may be a month ago. I was looking for audio book for Push by Sapphire. When i couldn't find it. I Unsubscribe it and i think i deleted the account also. Today, i checked my bank statement, it showed I have been charged for re-subscribing Monthly plan. Now, when I'm trying to login with my email it says no account is registered with this email. This is insane. I tried contacting their phone number. It ended saying not to waste time calling. Seriously!
This is an absolute scam. I would like to get my money refunded. If not I'm gonna take a legal action for charging on my unsubscribed account which is probably deleted. I have never made any kind of purchase from scribd. I have attached my statement of being charged by scribd its at the bood of statement. I'm charged $8.99
Apologies for the troubles, a member of our support team can definitely help you with this! Please email us at help@scribd.com, then update your review with your ticket number and a member of our team will reach out to you shortly. Thanks!
First of all, everything I tried to view was not formatted correctly. Secondly, they continued to charge my card for months after I cancelled. BEWARE!
Hi Scott - A member of our support team will be more than happy to assist you with this. Please email us at help@scribd.com, then update your review with your ticket number and a member of our team will reach out to you shortly. Thanks!
They charged my visa card without my permission. I am not even a subscriber.
Worse, they refuse to address the issue. They have no customer service, at all.
The are liars and cheats.
Hi Martin, this doesn't sound right. We would be happy to help you locate this transaction. The only reason why you would be getting charged is that your card is linked to a subscription in our system. If you have already emailed us for assistance with this, can you please update this review with your support ticket # so that we can look into this further? Thanks!
I have had a membership with Scribd for 7 months... I noticed about 4 months ago that the last week before my monthly payment is due, every audiobook I have saved is suddenly not available- until the day AFTER my payment is due. This has happened every month! They claim that there is no limit to the books and audiobooks that there members can read / listen to, but obviously there must be. This has happened every month and not only my saved audiobooks and also any audiobooks from any of the series that I read are suddenly not available, but also all titles that use the "Search" option for are not available either.
The only way to contact customer service is by email- which I did. They responded with an email saying that it would be 2 weeks or more until they would get to my complaint.
When I reread their terms, etc., they just make a general statement about availability. It is so obvious that this dishonest practice of making everything unavailable the last week before my payment is due is intentional. It is so obvious, especially since my selections become available as soon as the next payment is made. It's not like this happened once or twice, it happens like clockwork EVERY MONTH. This is horrible and dishonest!
Certain titles in our library may become temporarily unavailable for a variety of reasons, however, there will still be thousands of other titles to enjoy while you wait. You can read more on this here: https://bit.ly/3oK7abz. That said, we are glad you were able to connect with support and we do apologize for any frustration. We understand this is a sore spot for many of our users and we hope we may be able to implement a new system for this process sometime in the future. For now, we will absolutely pass along your feedback here as an additional example of customer dissatisfaction with this process. For now, our Advanced Search features may help you find more of the titles you're looking for. Read more about that here: https://bit.ly/3oK7abz and please update this review if there's anything else we can do to help in the meantime. Have a great day! -EC
I used my debit card on the site for nearly a year without incident. The site doesn't save many books that I tried to save so I had to bookmark them, they are no unlimited and the audio on audiobooks frequently goes out. They have a nice selection of books so I dealt with technical glitches.
I tried to make my 1st attempt to do auto payments on my credit card and had to freeze my credit card. I have to contact Experian because they made it look like I was trying to max out my card. The first charge of $100 went through and they refunded but then kept trying to charge.
They don't have a phone number so I have to wait and hope someone helps me. When I tried to log into my account it was gone and they thanked me for signing up yet they were still making several attempts to charge my card! Don't bother with this company or if you do use a visa gift card or something. They offer a bunch of crappy perks that don't even work most of the time but can't work out bugs on their website and have no phone number?! It's the largest internet library and no phone #? It's shady and seems to be a scam. Hope Audible crushes them.

I just realized i was paying to Scribd for more than a year. They make you sign for a trial and offcourse with your acount details and after that they just steal your money without a notification. They never send me an email with news or any document i could remeber i was in this sistem. I just could find in the website how to cancel the subscripction and i hope dont be charge anymore.
Hi Jesselyne! I'm so sorry to hear about this. Please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we will absolutely confirm cancellation and issue a refund!
I have been trying to log in to my scribd account to cancel my subscription before my 30 day free trial ends but every time I try to sign in I CAN'T GET IN, the site just brings me back to the home page. I have submitted a request but I never heard back. I am a broke college student I cannot pay for this.
Thank you for letting us know and I apologize for the delay from support! We can absolutely help escalate your ticket and assist you with canceling. So we can find your ticket, please update this comment with your ticket number and we'll get back to you ASAP
I gave the website my credit card information for a free trial and am now unable to log in due to not knowing the password. But I was NEVER even asked to set a password and now I am unable to RESET my password so getting into my account is impossible. I haven't been charged yet, but if I am I will be FURIOUS, Please fix this issue and I will change the review to a 5, however as many other reviewers have noted, this reeks of scam.
Hi Marcus - When you created your account, you would have set-up your own password. We're happy to reset it for you; please send us an email to help@scribd.com and we'll get this taken care of!
I signed up for a free trial on Scribd at the end of May so that I could access a powerpoint that I saw on the site. When I realize that it wasn't an actual powerpoint but just a pdf copy I canceled my account the same day (I now realize that they never sent me a record of that cancellation). On June 24th I was charged 11.99 anyways. I emailed them on June 29th explaining the issue and got no response. On July 24th my credit card was charged again. On July 25th I cancelled the account again (because it didn't show that it was cancelled) and I contacted Scribd again. This time I got confirmation of my contacts to them but no confirmation of my cancellation and no response from Scribd I tried to dispute the charge with American Express and Scribd immediately answered Amex and told them that there was no record of my first cancellation so Amex is charging me the 11.99 from June 24. I have not heard back about the second charge of 11.99.
Hi Renee, We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. As we are unable to bill an account that has been canceled, we will want to look into this for you. If you

Kept uploading files (which they would save) but wouldnt let me download any files in return. Thought it hadn't uploaded properly, but when I tried to upload them again to download a book, they wouldnt accept it as I had already uploaded it for them, but still wouldnt let me download a single thing. Awful.

I was charged today 5/24/2017 and i had already cancelled my membership and still was charged. I have no way of getting a hold of anyone from customer service and send several email. I just want my refund back and completely off of scribd. And when i cancelled it still says i have until june 23rd. I want nothing to do with this site and have not been on it.
They didn't sent me a notice that my free trial was over and charged me twice for the membership and won't answer to my emails, I asked for a refund about 3 days ago and no answer.

I cancelled account in January 2021 and they kept debiting for 21 months at almost $300. No email contact in that time because account is cancelled! No Contact from Scribd. Beware!

Just to let you know it takes MAJOR steps to cancel your membership. I thought I had done it, but had not clicked through enough windows to actually CANCEL. It turns out, I had just deactivated, so keep clicking until you get to the little bar that says you have actually cancelled. They make it really, really hard for you to leave, and if you click on the wrong thing, or just assume you've done your job, you WILL get hit with a charge.
Answer: Hi Katie. Thanks for reaching out. Our support team can assist you by emailing us at help@scribd.com. If you've emailed us already, send us a message here with your ticket number or the email address you wrote in with. Thanks! - Donni, Scribd Customer Support

Scribd has a rating of 1.1 stars from 881 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with Scribd most frequently mention free trial, credit card and customer service. Scribd ranks 188th among Ebook sites.
Hi Marc - I'm sorry to hear about your unexpected charges. Scribd does not have a "sister" company and we certainly would not take your credit card details from another site and sign you up on our site; this just isn't possible. Most likely, you signed up for a subscription with us and forgot to cancel, which is why you received the charges. In the future, please email us at help@scribd.com and we'll be happy to locate your charges and issue a refund! Thank you!
