Please use any other rental car company...
You thought Philip Green was dodgy... these guys are gold medal winners.
100s of clauses in their Terms, all scamming you. Embarrassing.
This company is shambolic! Terrible customer service. One agent on the phone even hung up the phone on me when I asked them if I could speak to someone else.
I made a booking with them for Europcar and it said in the details that the pick-up deposit must only be made with a credit card and nothing else. I called them to ask about it and they confirmed over the phone that was the case. I had to change my booking to a more expensive rental that would accept debit cards.
When picking up the car the Europcar the office manager told me that they always accept debit cards and that Rentalcars were wrong.
After a truly painful experience trying to get the difference refunded as it was their mistake they eventually outright refused saying it was my fault.
So it was my fault that I didn't check the incorrect information when making my booking?!
Trying to submit a complaint about a rental is almost impossible, I think they just hope you'll give up.
You'll have to pay extra for the privilege of using them as 3rd party and if you have a problem they'll conveniently disappear.
Just go straight to the rental company
On 04/06/16 in Los Angeles, California, I got online to book a 3-day car rental in Iceland from July 7 to July 9,2016. I was confused by the way the date format used in the website and entered April 7 to April 9,2016. Less than 2 days later when I noticed some discrepancy in the reservation confirmation, I contacted the customer service of Rentalcars.com to make correction. At the time, I also discovered the mistake as to the dates of the rental. The customer service person understood the obvious mistake because when I made the reservation, it was less than 10 hours before the pick up time which is just a mission impossible. The customer service person promised me that he could help me make reservation for the correct dates and cause the refund of the money that had been charged to my credit card. However, he said that he had to get the supplier, i. E., Green Motion in Reykjavik, Iceland, to confirm that the car was not picked up. After that day, i. E., April 8,2016, I called Rentalcars.com several more times to inquire about this and was repeatedly promised that he/she would send email to Green Motion to ask Green Motion to confirm the car was not picked up and immediately refund the money to me. At one point of time, the person over Rentalcars.com even sent me an email to confirm that. However, after I complained to the credit car company, Rentalcars.com submitted to my credit card company Rentalcars.com's online record showing the rental was "complete" and refused to let the credit card charge back the charge. I can only say that Rentalcars.com people are shameless and greedy.
I booked a car with rentalcars.com in Mexico and only had a debit card but the rental company required a credit card. We then went on to try and change the primary driver on our booking to someone who had brought their credit card. The rental company mas by mex(also stay away from them) was not that helpful but were willing to accept a debit card if we paid an extra US$1000. Rentalcars.com then told us that they could not change the booking and would only refund me if i made another booking on their site. I had 8 people in my party and we needed a van. Rentalcars.com did not have a van available. I then explained this to the them and the representative told me to cancel the booking and I would get my refund. I then canceled the booking and never got my refund. When I tried to enquire about my refund, they back tracked and said they would not refund me anymore. I lost almost $800 for a car I didn't even end up getting. This was the worst rental car experience I have ever had and will not be working with this website again.
I made a booking via rentalcars.com (ref: *******), paid £411.75 (including insurance cover) and was to pick the car up from Sixt car hire on Deltic Avenue Milton Keynes on 27/12/21. Unfortunately Sixt was having an IT issue and couldn't complete my rental, but they assured me they will let rentalcars.com know the cancellation wasn't my fault. I also called rentalcars.com to inform them that same day, and they put me on hold while they confirmed my explanation with Sixt. The assured me that Sixt confirmed my story, so my request for refund will be processed. Not receiving any refund after day 4, I called and this time they changed the story, insisting they can only refund my insurance cover fee of £64.82. I was furious and said they cannot keep my money. They then sent me an email confirming they will keep £346.93 as cancellation fee. I called and sent several emails, even obtained an email from Sixt confirming the cancellation wasn't my fault, which I forwarded to them. Almost a month since I advised them Sixt wasn't able to process my rental or give me any car, rentalcars.com refuses to pay me back the £346.93 balance. I will now be taking the matter to the county court, with the conviction the court will order the refund of my money, plus costs. Rentalcars.com cannot be trusted. They have zero customer service and instead are waiting for any opportunity to rip-off their customers. They don't deserve a rating of 1.
We rented a car in Iceland for our son and his 2 friends. We paid $96 for the ins coverage and believed we paid for 2 extra drivers fora total of $770 for 8 days online to book the reservation. When they picked the car up they asked for a credit card and one of the friends gave their card….then was told to sign a form in the Icelandic language.
They had a great trip and loved Iceland.when they returned the car a change of $348.99 went on the friend's card. When they got home I called to say we already paid for the insurance and extra drivers. They said the extra drivers were not covered and since my son didn't use his credit card they charged $261 for insurance…we ALREADY had full insurance coverage for $96! They WILL not reimburse use the $261 but said they would refund the $96 because the form was signed on site! We will see if the refund comes through.
The rental agreement listed the fact that we already had insurance and it was deceptive to have them sign a form in a foreign language for insurance we already had! In total we paid $1019.99 because of their deceptive practices….others rates were in the $650-$750 range but this rental was a slightly larger sedan. BUYER BEWARE!
I have booked a car from Avis Thailand through their portal (rentalcars.com). I was given a below standard car for the duration of my rental. The undercarriage was totally destroyed and had been fixed with cable ties (car was in an accident previously and they had not informed me at pick up). Of course it broke down again while I was driving half way through my trip. Ended up not being able to use the car for 3 days, until I find a way to fix it myself, being in the middle of the Thailand countryside, 1h drive from the nearest town with a garage. I have informed Rentalcars.com of the incident, they did not seem to concerned about it and told me to open a claim after I return the car. I opened a claim on their website after returning the car, asking for compensation, they closed it after 4 hours, "thanking me for the feedbacks and for helping them improve their service". F... ng joke! I have opened back the claim, ever since no one replies to my messages, no one give a damn about the case. Their customer service is inexistant. If all goes OK during the rental, good for you. If not, just now they will not give a damn about you as soon as they take your money. Better think twice before renting a car through third-party agents like them. They absolutely do not care about customer service. Just there to take the money and cash in their commission with the rental companies. For the rest, you can just get lost...
Run away as far as you can from this company, presumably part of booking.com group...
A total rip off. Do not use them. I cancelled at the airport when I found out all the extra hidden charges, was cheaper to cancel and take the loss than pay anymore. DO NOT USE!
We rented a van via rental cars.com for a trip to Punta de Mulita Mexico. Paid in full and bought insurance covering $75k for the car and $1mm for liability and injury.
Arrived at the counter of Europcar as per contract and were told we needed to buy another $271 policy or they'd refuse to let the car.
Rental cars.com has no customer service number or chat or text or email so we're left to deal with the issue in a foreign country with absolutely fraudulent agents insisting I pay them or walk away with no car.
I did call American Express because this is on my Platinum Business card. Amex sent the agents the policy and explained to them, in Spanish that I was indeed covered as per Mexican laws and rules but the agent remained insistent that we pay the extra money to them.
I tried everything I could to get rentalcars.com to help but they don't respond and there is no service at all post taking your money.
I walked away with no car, went to another agency and rented another car without issue, using the same insurance policy id presented to Europcar.
I now have to work through Amex to get my refund because, again, rentalcars.com has no customer contact at all.
I recently reserved a car from Dollar and then modified the rental within 24 hours of making the first reservation which was weeks ahead of the rental time frame.
On the App I saw that the reservation had been cancelled and that I would not be charged for the cancellation.
While calling my credit company to ensure that my card would work for the time that I would be out of the country the representative told me that there were two rentals on my credit card bill and that there was a small refund which was the difference between the first reservation from Dolar and the second from Thrifty. Rentalcars.com maintains that they have refunded me what they owe me and requested screen shots of the statements form the bank.
After submitting the screen shots I was told by another person there that screen shots were not enough and that I would have to present statements from the bank. I've since done that and have been waiting three days now for an answer. I have since informed my bank and they will be handling this matter as a case of credit card fraud.
I have used this company in the past without problem but I never had the need to use the customer support from them before.
I hope that this matter gets solved quickly since the bank is taking over the process now.
It's been over three weeks since this whole process began and I had to spend valuable time during my vacation dealing with this matter.
It's a shame that I will have to look at another company the next time that I rent a car because I've had nothing but good experiences with them up until this point.
I paid $490 for a rental car I had for TWO DAYS in Sicily through this agency. It was originally rented for 11 days, and I had to turn it in after two days because of an unavoidable change in plans. No appealing to customer service resulted in any refund whatsoever. Part of that rental was the so-called EXCESS insurance charge. Besides not getting any refund from the original reservation, I was actually FINED when I came to turn the car in. BEWARE of this company! They have no compunction in defrauding customers. Also know that they are AFFILIATED with PRICELINE, but when I tried to bring this matter up with them, they washed their hands of the matter.
Dollar looks to take advantage of and exploit disabled people. We came to the rental counter at MCO airport in Orlando Florida with my wife in a wheel chair. The Dollar employee said the car we had reserved would not have enough room for the wheelchair as well as our luggage so he offered us a free upgrade to a larger vehicle. He went to his supervisor and got the approval for the free upgrade. He even wrote the approval and the supervisors name on the rental agreement envelope holding the rental agreement documents. We were promised no additional cost for the upgrade to fit my wife's wheelchair. Our credit card was then charged over $1200. We have been working for a month to get this error on their part corrected. We have been given nothing but the run around and now we are told they cannot verify the conversation about the free upgrade. They are calling us lyers even though we have sent them copies of the signed agreement with the free upgrade detailed. It appears to me that Dollar saw an opportunity to take advantage of a disabled customer and they did so. I would never suggest to anyone to rent from Dollar or their parent company Hertz.
I rented a car from Manchester Airport In July for 5 weeks. Rentalcars took full payment form my credit card for the hire but when I went to pick-up the car, I was told I would have to pay an extra 17 pound because I was picking up the car early. How early was It?. It was 20 minutes early. I asked if I came back in 20 minutes would I be charged extra, the guy said "No" I came back after 25 minutes, the guy took my details, driving license and so on, then asked my for my credit card for any damages when the car was returned. The company refused to take my credit card because it did not have a 'chip' in the card. This is the same card I used to pay Rentalcars. After being humiliated at the desk, I then had to find my own transport to Shropshire. I emailed Rentalcars on July 15, finally (because they hide there email address on the site) explained what had happened and expressed I would like a refund and explanation, why Rentalcars accepted my credit card but I was not told it would be refused at the Airport. At this moment, 30th November (That is 6 months) I have not had an explanation or a refund. I am still waiting! I also have a voice recording of my conversation at the Airport.
I rarely write up reviews, but feel I should share how badly handled the customer service was with rentalcars following a booking 3 months ago. I had made a booking through Rentalcars at Sofia airport with Enterprise at 4am, rentalcars had my flight number and had ensured there would be a rep as they provide out of hours service. On landing, no rep to process our booking. I spent 2 hours trying to contact people locally from Enterprise and contacted Rentalcars who also tried to get in touch, nothing. As it was early there was only one other local hire car agency open, Rentalcars advised I could make a booking through them and they would reimburse the difference. Good service I thought. I even checked the price difference with them to ensure it was OK. 3 months later I'm still trying to claim this difference as promised on their recorded calls, they have tried to fob me off saying the flight number wasn't recorded but has been easily been proven wrong by me with their confirmation bookings. Completely dire service leaving me out of pocket.
TOTAL FRAUD. They misguide with low price. They clobber you once you give them your cc info. They won't let you cancel and never get through on the phone.
Im still fighting to get my money back.
I booked through Priceline and was redirected to this scam site. They charged me for 2 reservations. I cancelled one and was then sent a confirmation the day. THE CAR WAS NOT READY AT THE AIRPORT AND THEY REFUSE TO REFUND MY MONEY BACK1
I contacted my credit card company and they said they would not refund me despite cancelling and picking up because I reported them to my credit card company. BEWARE!
Booked a rental car and then tried to cancel but could never get through on the phone. Never used the car but they refused to refund me. Scam. Do not do business with this company!?!
I WISH I COULD GIVE 0 STARS
As someone mentioned before this is a company with no morals
I am so disgusted with the lack of support I received. All I wanted to do was modify the name and they wouldn't let me.
I had to pay an extra 200€ to rebook the same car directly with the rental company
When I called crying to ask for help the customer service agent hung up on me
Please don't book with them and go directly to the car rental company
I have been renting through The Rentalcars.com website several times per year for about 3 years now and have been very pleased with the prices I have paid. For example, when British Airways / Avis wanted £700+ for a 7 seater Dodge Grand Caravan in San Diego, Rentalcars got it for me for £250.
However, I am prompted to write due to two positive experiences with their Customer Service. Last December I had booked a car an Innsbruck airport through rental cars. The night before travelling to Innsbruck I printed out the paperwork and found the particular rental company would not accept American Express. I phoned Rentalcars and they managed to change my booking to another company that accepted American Express and were cheaper than the original one!
In May I booked a car for a week at St John's airport in New Foundland, Canada. Unfortunately, I accidentally forgot to pack my driving licence. I rang Rentalcars from Canada but they were unable to help me get a car without my licence. They told me to ring their customer services when I got home. I did this and within two weeks they obtained a full refund of £250 for me from the car rental company.
I do not take the extra insurance they offer because, being a regular traveller, I pay about £80 per year for an online insurance that covers all the rip-off excesses charged by car rental companies.
We hire Enterprise car rental services, through RentalCars, for a weekend, worth 92 (prepaid). A credit card was required and we both had a credit card, but we did it with my card and put the other person as a driver.
Upon arrival at the airport, we were told that the cardholder should be the same person suscribed as driver. So we told them to indicate myself as a driver, but after 40 minutes calling the two companies, we were forced to rent another car (paying it in cash) and nobody returned the money from the other rental.
In short, they forced us to lose 40 minutes of our weekend holiday so that in the end we paid another rent and nobody returned the almost 100 we had paid for the previous car.
Once back from our weekend, we reported about the situation to both RentalCars and Enterprise, and they both washed their hands. They told us they were very sorry, but they have kept the almost 100 prepaid rental.
What a scram! What a fraud!
NEVER WITH RENTALCARS!
NEVER WITH ENTERPRISE!
Answer: Good luck with that one, I'm in the same boat, I'm going to pass my situation on to the travel doctor at the Sunday Times.
