As a customer who has paid for their premium audiobook service, I'd like to warn everyone about recent changes. Playster is going to limit selection based on usage. I listened to a book every two or three days, and have been limited to the sort of selection you can get for free at any library, as in books so old that they are freely available in the US. Why would anyone pay for this?
Also they don't do partial refunds, no matter how clearly the issue is their fault. Save your money and stick to more honest sites.
I have a premium audiobook subscription, and one day without warning, the amount of content I could access through browsing or search was cut by probably 70% or more, and the only stuff I could still see and enjoy was obscure titles and things in foreign languages. It's taken a solid month of me bothering customer support to try to push some resolution so I know whether this issue will ever be fixed, or I should just cancel my subscription.
I am getting very frustrated with the book selection. 80% of the time when I search for a specific book that I've heard was good it isn't available. I really enjoy book series but Playster rarely has all the books in a series. In some cases my library actually has a better selection of audiobooks than Playster does.
The good news is that the app works better than it used to. It used to stop frequently and it doesn't do that as often anymore, maybe once a week instead of once a day. So in functionality I'm seeing an improvement, now if they just get more books.
They did not notify me until MONTHS had passed that my payments were being blocked. They said I would have to pay the entire balance. I explained I could not afford to pay the total and asked if I could make payments since it was their fault they did not notify me right away. They refused and requested the total amount. This is an unfair billing practice. Be very cautious when dealing with this company. They do not care about their customers.
I like the idea behind playster. I do wish it was handled better though. Customer Service is not great. The app glitches, shuts down, while I have a full access it tells me I cant listen to anything, because I really ought to get full access. They definitely need better software.
You can't beat the price for unlimited audiobook listening. Unfortunately the selection of books leave something to be desired. The app is also very quirky and unreliable at times. I've switched back to Audible for now until they work out some more of the kinks.
Im an idiot. Thats why I keep paying top dollar for a service that promises to give me access to ALL its available audiobooks and never does. I can only listen to audiobooks that I had previously stored on my wishlist months ago, before the increase in charge and change in account plans. I cant listen to anything new. It keeps saying I need to upgrade my account but Im paying for the premium plan.
Also, the app never saves my bookmarks and rarely saves my place. Books Ive finished keep appearing on my continue listening list.
Hi Laura, I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you're facing. If you haven't already, please email support@playster.com so we can look into this for you. Thanks!
It's hard to find an audiobook by browsing. I'll browse not find anything then search for a specific title and sometimes find it that way. Also when browsing for an author it just gives info about the author not links to his book so searching for an author is useless because I'm looking for books they've written not when they were born or where they live
I have been a long-time user of the service back when it was only $14 a month for all my audiobooks I suffered through the hike to 2995 a month for my audiobooks here recently they kick me on my account send me an email saying theyre sorry for the inconvenience credit me back one month of my payment and then removed every single book I had saved to my account to listen to when I went back to try to find the books they were no longer on their server therefore I cannot listen to the books I want to finish. Reached out to the customer support chat with back-and-forth for a week and she was never resolved
Terrible experience! No lie, I tried the free trial and was wildly disappointed. So i cancelled. TWO WEEKS later they charged me. I called to complain and it was like pulling teeth to get my money back. Very rude. Playster personnel LIED TO ME POINT BLANK, explaining that no money was withdrawn from my account; making me call my bank to confirm that funds WERE withdrawn, by them! I had to send them a screenshot of the email cancellation confirmation THEY SENT ME! I'm astounded this company has ANY subscribers. What a ripoff! I'll stick with the names I trust. Buyer beware!
Playster should rework the whole "unlimited" idea and call it what it is. A lie. Playster if you're reading this: YOU'RE LIARS!
I am fairly happy with playster. I wish it kept better track of the books I have read. Not every book I have read is listed. I also think it would be helpful if you delete the book out of your lineup after reading, that there was a way to tell you have already read that book when your browsing at a later time. It is difficult to search for new books. Searching by author or by book doesnt always work. I have to uninstall then reinstall quite a bit it seems like.
I had been using Playster for around 4 months when I lost my job and had to adjust my budget. It turns out I made a mistake during the cancellation process and ended up being charged for another month after I had already stopped using it. However when I called support they were extremely sympathetic and refunded my last charge. This experience has left a huge impression on me, and I am almost certain to use Playster again when my situation turns around. It is a fantastic concept and if they can continue to treat their customers this way I believe it will only meet greater success.
This is great to read, Shirley. I'm glad you got the assistance you needed. We wish you all the best and really hope you'll consider using Playster again in the future!
If you break down the cost of it Playster is very reasonably priced. Movies + games + music + books for $25. Thats $6.25 each, way less than other services would charge for just one kind. The content seems to be getting really good too since they just added a lot of audio books for no extra cost.
Hi Gail! Thank you for the positive feedback. Yes, we've tried to make Playster financially accessible for as many customers as possible. Remember, you can also subscribe to a single media type for just $9.95 USD per month if you don't want to pay the full $24.95/mo membership. The full package is the best deal but we know that some people only want specific content, so we're trying to cater to a wide audience. Hope you're enjoying our audio books!
It sounds catchy to describe the service as "endless entertainment", I understand that there can be practical difficulties to getting the copyright to a lot of books. But, I have gone through the books available and it seems the service would like to cater to just those who read the pop culture books. Its a serious issue that Playster needs to rectify if they want to bring in the loyal customers.
For now I see myself being happy with Kindle, would love to see Playster stepping up to the challenge rather than hiding behind safe bets.
Hi Tony,
Sorry to hear you're not seeing books that you like on our browse page. Recommendations are important to us as we grow our collection, so please send us a direct message and we'll get our content team on the case!
We just added 50,000 audiobooks this week, and we're now the only subscription service in the world offering a truly unlimited audiobooks service – so we're most definitely stepping up! We've also partnered with Vearsa which allows smaller publishers to come on board and diversify our collection even further. Naturally we're delighted to have the world's largest publishers as partners, but niche content is important to us too and we're hugely proud of what can now offer to our members in that respect.
We've got thousands more titles to add before the end of the year, and we're really excited for our members. We'd love you to join them!
Yes, there is great content with Playster. I had the audio books subscription - nearly every book I wanted to listen to was available. But the user experience was ridiculously bad. Between the app not remembering where I was, giving up on using bookmarks, not working in offline mode, having to be connected to wifi, logging out when it lost connection with wifi and the connected to devices incomprehensible list, it was the worst app experience I've ever had. I cancelled my subscription because there was an outage with no information related to customers plus very poor turnaround on fixing it. I gave up! It's not worth the content if the experience leaves me frustrated and upset. Audio books are supposed to be a relaxing experience, not a stressful one. Playster needs to spend money on app development as well or all the content in the world won't make a difference and they will go out of business. I'm gone and staying gone.
Playster is definitely a cool idea. All kinds of entertainment (movies, games, music and ebooks) through one site. No where else can offer such a selection. However they need to work on their site before it can be something truely great. It is very slow right now and can be hard to search for things. That said they have a very good selection of things, especially with regard to books and some quite good movies. You just have to be patient to find what you are looking for.
Hi Zain! Thanks for your feedback. We're working hard on releasing the new version of Playster. It should run a lot faster than the current iteration, and will feature a shiny new coat of paint, among other quality-of-life updates. We're very excited to launch and share it with our users. Watch this space!
I really like the app. But there is no warning for in app purchases, the navigation is cumbersome and the choices are limited. However, I did enjoy the app and have not renewed my subscription because I don't want to risk another $35 monthly charge.
Tip: The only advantage Audible has over Playster is the selection of new and popular books.
The app crashes too often. Some books dont have a listenbutton.
Customer service is friendly but cannot offer results. They do give refunds when Playster is down, so I am very pleased about that
I really love audiobooks and came into Playster super excited. It does have a great selection and the subscription model is great! However, a few months ago there was a price increase for access to most books and it is now getting a bit pricey. I am not sure if I really want to continue for too much longer at this higher price.
Caveat - I only use for audiobooks. Best thing about the service is the price. It's very affordable and you can stream from a wide choice of content for a low monthly fee whereas on Audible it was costing me significantly more (I'm addicted to audiobooks, don't judge). However, the app itself is not very user friendly and it can be difficult to find what you're looking for. Once I figured it out, I thought it would be smooth sailing. Unfortunately, it looses my place in my audiobook all the time causing me to fast forward, freezes most of the time when trying to fast forward or rewind, and can take a long time to start the audiobook if it starts at all, often it doesn't. Only a small quantity of the audiobooks are available to download for offline listening, and those, once downloaded, work fine. I'm still on the fence whether I'll stay or switch back to Audible because these things are very aggravating. Their idea is good if they could only improve the user experience.
Answer: Hi Mailla, I'm not sure when we'll be getting the white tablets back in stock, but I can keep you posted via this site!
Answer: Hi Alex, Yes, you can certainly do that. Sign up for the 1-month free trial and try it out. If, within the 1-month period, you have decided you like what Playster has to offer and would like to commit to a year's membership, simply contact us on Facebook and we can upgrade your free trial membership to the Combo Box package. Unfortunately we cannot send the Combo Box as part of the free trial, but we can send it to you once you choose to upgrade your account. Thanks for your interest in Playster. Have a great day!
