Mercari Reviews Summary

Mercari's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, primarily due to issues with product descriptions, return policies, and inadequate customer support. Many users report receiving items that do not match their descriptions or arrive damaged, with little recourse for refunds. Complaints highlight a lack of effective communication from both sellers and the platform itself, leading to feelings of frustration and mistrust. While some customers appreciate the streamlined buying and selling process, the overwhelming sentiment indicates that unresolved issues and high fees overshadow any positive experiences, suggesting a need for improved customer service and clearer policies.

Seller sold me Pyrex vintage bowls. Wrapped well, but shipper dropped the box. I put a claim into UPS it took forever. I told the seller I had done this. Two days later she put a claim in with who she purchased shipping with. Pirate Ship. With a lot of time researching emails with UPS, Mercari. I find out that she shipped with Pirate Ship and I need to go through them. I get a hold of Pirate Ship and they sent the seller a check for my bowls I purchased...I am out $60. I paid her and she received a check for my broken bowls for $89. Mercari said I should have returned them right away. Here I was thinking it was not the sellers fault and trying to be nice. No one will help me, seller will not reply to me. Beware!

Buyer be cautious company is seller biased
February 8, 2025

This is a company that does not protect the buyer even though you are forced to buy insurance for this. Once an issue is filed they block any access to your account so no comments or messages can be sent to the seller. Also the seller is able to purge any messages sent to him.
The issue was an item was sent that was the wrong product. I told the seller and he said I had to get a return authorization from Mercari. I contacted Mercari with the issue. They promptly locked my account while they looked into the issue. They responded with "it looks like it is exactly what you ordered".
I responded with the part number sent to me and the part number that I actually ordered.
They responded and said I was correct. And finally issued a mailing label. The time from the order initiated to resolution was almost three weeks. Who knows when I'll actually receive my refund.
I would highly recommend not using this platform and use a reputable one that actually helps the customer such as Ebay

A company that is considered to be one of the largest online trading scam companies. Both the seller and the administrative person are members of the same class. When a seller sells a defective item, there is no way you can return it. They will allow you to have it for 3 days, but if you don't like it, you can return it. I think this is also their fake commitment.
Fraud Details:
Item Name: Munchkin Warm Glow Baby Wipe Warmer, Item ID: M*******089, Item Purchased Date: 01/06/2025, Ship Date: 01/10/2025, item Delivered Date 01/15/2025. I have contacted with the seller about faulty items more than 9 times. I've tried various methods to make it work, but unfortunately it's not work as expected. The seller is a fraud, he knowingly sold defective item. I contacted the seller many times, and at one point he even admitted that his goods were defective, which screenshot I add with the message.

Worst Company Ever
January 18, 2025

I bought 35 items from a seller. I received about 20. Mercari says I need to ship my entire order back to seller and if they accept I could get a refund
WHAT?
2. Seller posted they do not want items return yet they refuse to send missing items.
3. Mercari says I can't cancel because some items were delivered.
4. Seller refuses to cancel
5. I paid buyer protection fee.
BOTTOM LINE
They keep my money, I'm out half my purchase and if you think I'm stupid enough to send the only items I did get back to seller who already ripped me off you must be out of your mind!
I WILL NEVER USE MERCARI AGAIN AND I WANT OTHER BUYERS TO SEE THIS SO THEY DON'T GET RIPPED OFF BY THIS SHADY COMPANY THAT PROMOTED SHADY SELLERS.
I have filed complaint with BBB and I'll be disputing this with my bank, oh and I'll be leaving NEGATIVE review on maps.

I hate Mercari because if you buy anything that arrives broken well you are SOL. You can dig around and find something that appears you will.be sending in for your problem however, you'll never hear from Mercari. Or if you try to report your complaint through their questionnaire, it never even asks if the package arrived damaged. No where to write what the problem is provided. The customers will tell you, that Mercari instructs them to send you to Mercari. This has happened to me 3 times. Just recieved a piece of porcelain that the seller didn't not pack one piece of paper or bubblewrap with. I guess they've learned to sell it, get money, so what if it's broken because Mercari will.never make the seller do the right thing. I can't afford to order from a place that ghosts the buyer. The seller is the only one that benefits. Done with this company. I've lost a few hundred dollars because of this! Terrible company and customer service. I'll telling everyone!

Horrible rates, sellers can't sell because they have to increase price just to make a buck, so buyers won't buy...rates are horrible for buyers too, why the heck should buyers have to pay extra fees besides shipping and if course the item.what is the extra fee? How come we can't get hold of ANYONE? IF A REPLY IS FORTHCOMING, ITS AN AUTO GENERATED ONE. JAPANESE CANNOT SPEAK, READ OR WRITE ENGLISH?

I HATE HATE HATE MERCARI...FILE YOUR COMPLAINTS WITH THE BBB/BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU.LETS

I bought 3 small Prada bear bag charms as a special Christmas present for my younger sister; she collects bears. The items were preowned so I wasn't expecting new condition. I didn't expect them to stink. I didn't ask if they had a smell. The seller didn't say anything about odor or not. They arrived sealed in plastic bags which didn't help. It's so offensive I can't even hold them. I couldn't possibly give these as a gift. This was a significant purchase for me that was extremely disappointing. My return request was denied. I should've asked if the items had an odor. They're okay with sellers selling stuff that literally stinks. It's too bad for you if you bought it. So I've asked them — if I list these items & the next unsuspecting buyer doesn't think bag charms should stink, so they don't ask, too bad for them? That's okay for me to dupe the next buyer? They'll have my back? When they denied the return they completed the transaction. That generally means the seller was rated. I didn't get to give them an honest review. BTW — I've been a respected buyer for several years. It hasn't been easy. I've got 100% positive reviews that include 24 very thoughtful comments. I've made many more purchases, as most sellers don't bother with giving a review.
I'm not going back. They've lost my trust. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.

Mercari customer service is absolutely worthless. I received an item damaged in shipment due to the sellers complete lack of ability to package it properly. I notified the seller because there was no way to do so through my orders page, and when I came back to check on the status I was told that the item had been automatically approved and finalized by Mercari. I messaged the Help Center stating the issue and I continually got canned replies saying "rest assured"...however the only thing you can be assured of is that the resolution will be anything but. Their last message stated there was nothing they could do as per their policies, so they were closing my case and blocked my communication with the seller, leaving me with a broken, worthless tablet and no way to try to resolve it. I will never make the mistake of purchasing something from Mercari again and I hope others take the same advice.

I made an offer of $255 for an item at 8:45am on Dec 18 during Mercari's Zero Selling Fee promotion. Mercari showed me a total payment of $290.79 ($255 + $9.40 processing fee + $26.38 taxes) which was fine with me as it was under my budget of $300.

The seller accepted my offer on the same day but my credit card was billed $316.29 (see below) because Mercari tacked on a $25.50 service fee. Mercari said that the Zero Selling Fee promotion expired at 11:59am on 12/18 and the seller accepted my offer offer at 5pm on 12/18.

Sellers have 24 hours to accept an offer. I can't control when the Seller chooses to accept my offer (or even if they do). I can't only control when I made the offer — and I made it when the promo was still in effect. Mercari confirmed that by computing a total purchase cost of $290.79 that excluded the Selling Fee. Yet it went ahead and charged me the $25.50 selling fee. That's false advertising.

I've gone back & forth with Mercari Support and they claim it's the "system" and they can't overrule the system. Which is BS. Mercari needs to refund me $25.50.

Received broken product
December 26, 2024

Ordered Sony PSP for a gift and it arrived broken. Because it was a Christmas gift it was over the 72 hour limit. I can not believe they would ship a broken console and were no help in trying to rectify the situation. Will never again buy from them.

This seller is a fraud. Do not buy from him you'll never get your item. I bought a backpack on Dec 13th. 5 days later I messaged seller and he replied that his printer broke and he would go to his office the next day to print a label and try his hardest to ship item that evening. A few days later I messaged him again to see if he was able to ship the item I purchased but he would never respond back to me. Today I told him I wanted a refund and he sent me a nasty message back in return.

Mercari has been a nightmare. First time using them is also the last. I received an email from Mercari acknowledging a shipping address different from my residence address at the time of purchase. According to the seller, the shipping address information wasn't communicated to her. She shipped to the wrong address. The package will be left on the porch in the open, not only tempting to anyone looking for a package to pilfer, but also signalling no one is home.

Than claims 3 days later after it arrived that it was full of white paint spots. I showed pics to mercari how my item arrived in excellent condition ans how it looked before and no response and they refunded the buyer and is having her mail it back to me damaged! They are awful! Customer service & takes days to get back to you and no help! I'm done with them

Absolutely Horrible Experience with Mercari. I would have given a zero star if I could. I purchased three vintage Hersey bowls as a Christmas gift from a seller, the three bowls arrived broken into pieces. The seller was extremely rude and not helpful. The box was not marked fragile, the seller had wrapped the ceramic bowls in white box wrapping paper and stacked them on top of each other. The box arrived undamaged with indicates it had not been tossed around by the shipping company but they were broken because of poor packing and not being protected. I paid a total of $34 plus shipping for the three bowls and wish I had kept my money. I normally do a google search of company ratings prior to spending money but I didn't do it this time and I regret it. Google ratings have them as such: Bad customer service, No support if there is a problem with buyer and seller, too many scammers, counterfeit items sold, high shipping cost, 5,684 customer complaints with Better Business Bureau. I've experienced all of the above!

... of being buying and selling in this platform with the highest reviews.
Now all of the sudden, customer service is rude and not helpful. The main goal seems to be ONLY making money, fleecing buyers with outrageous fees, because they stopped charging fees to sellers, but asking them of course to low their prices, (what many, me included did), so they do not lose a dime.
Their CS was spotty, but not bad overall and now that you are a loyal member means squat, when a simple dispute over a non as described color (listed as silver, but it's gunmetal) arises, saying that "it could be if the lighting...", it was only $20! Yet I am lying? And saying that is not the treatment I expected, they are happy to tell me how to close the account if I wish. Well... I did!
Good riddance. I will not recommend this place to anyone, get out before it sinks.
