We definitely cannot recommend MaxSold online auction…they totally failed us. My husband and I feel angry, disappointed, heartbroken, and depressed. We were looking forward to greatly downsizing in order to move closer to family; it was recommended to view the Maxsold website to help sell the contents of our home. I was very excited after reading the text and listening to the testimonials from past customers. After contacting MaxSold, I was happy the company would handle our online sale; we signed a contract and a team of workers were to come to our home to take pictures of our many antiques and collectibles, in addition to other household items. This fee of taking pictures, forming lots, cataloging items, and arranging pickup of items was to cost $700; the company would take 30% of our sales, in addition to charging buyer's premium costs. The sale would be 7-10 days. However, we were later told there was no team available in PA to do the prep work and one of their partners would contact us. The cost was now $6,000 for the prep. My husband and I did a lot of the preparation, working many days to exhaustion. This sale was not 7-10 days, however it was online 5 days only! And we had absolutely no local advertising. We expected signage for the front lawn so local people would know our household items were being sold on a website. We kept expecting signs to be delivered, but signs were never delivered. Everyone we asked in our community, never heard of MaxSold. We were frustrated that there was no local advertising. It was obvious that this hurt our sales by the few people who bid on our items and how extremely cheap our valuable items sold for; customers told us they were very sad for us but happy for themselves to purchase such quality items at a bargain price! And we were left with so many items that weren't listed online, that we still need to work endless hours trying to take inventory to various auction houses. We definitely made a huge mistake trusting MaxSold to help us.

It's disappointing that this customer had an unsatisfactory experience - should they decide to provide more details on who they are / which auction was theirs we would be happy to follow up with them and attempt to make it right in their eyes.

In addition to taking feedback from our Seller’s and doing our best to make it right in their eyes, it’s important to provide the following information for transparency for others that may be reading this. While we do operate in over 30 metros across North America, we do not yet have a team in every city. We do have professional partners that we refer in those instances that a team may not be available and the contract for the service is then contracted with the partner and Maxsold is the platform which the items will be sold.

It’s an unfortunate reality that the market doesn’t always pay a seller what a seller thinks is a fair price for individual things (or perhaps even in aggregate) under a competitive auction model (this is true for any auction company). Maxsold does its very best to provide both a detailed outline of our process (www.maxsold.com/sell) and share our past auction data (www.maxsold.com/past) to prepare sellers for the realities of the market when items must be sold. Sellers have both financial and emotional attachments to items and so our job is to sell only those items they need to part with - typically items that will soon be a liability due to a move / sale of real estate / etc. as selling the items avoids additional and/or ongoing, logistical and/or storage costs. Our model, which includes selling everything to the highest bidder regardless of price, guarantees our sellers a finite and transparent experience that passes the logistical burden onto the buyers as they MUST arrive and remove, with their own resources, all of their purchases from the sellers location during a short time window agreed to by the Seller. This saves hundreds (if not thousands) in labor alone.

It never occurred to me that when I should've been enjoying an 'empty nest" & grandchildren I would also have to deal with my mother-in-law & then my mother's Estate.

We sold some of my mother in law's stuff individually, but due to the timing of the closing date for selling her condo, 90% of her 'stuff's went to the charity shop.

So when my Mom moved to a nursing home, I saw an ad online that offered online auctions for 'estates'. Maxsold website explained the entire process through videos & it was without a doubt the best decision I made when I signed on to have an auction & clear out my Mom's house.

They offered 2 types of auctions. Customer Managed Auction & Maxsold Managed Auction. The Maxsold Managed cost more but that included Maxsold employees coming over & putting the "catalogue " together for you

I opted for the one where I put the catalogue together (using their program) & they took a $300 fee from the final sales.

I took all the pics, wrote up all of the descriptions and I took the pics to mom, so she could be sure I wasnt selling anything she wanted to keep.

I set the dates for how long the auction would be online & I also decided the dat3s & times for when the pick up days & times.

I was impressed from start to finish. I think the entire process (from my signing up until when I received a cheque) took less than 3 weeks!

So should anyone feel the 'Urge to Purge' while this pandemic runs its course, Maxsold is the place to turn to. They ll bring a lot more customers to your auction than any yard sale or online ad you post.

Big or small, Living or Deceased Estates, Maxsold has been helping people purge their belongings for years. During the Pandemic they could be considered an Essential Service.

I bid on two auctions and went to pick up on same day 50 km apart. Time lines are set in stone so I was in hurry to get to both. First auction seemed ok but one of the items which was described as unplayed cards had 1500 plus cards in it. There was no way I could inventory the cards in that short a time and I had to go to the second location. When I inventoried the cards at home I found that they had been used and picked through the best cards were gone and only the commons were left. Had it been listed correctly I would never have bid that high. I applied for a refund but was told because I left the site with it i was out of luck (read that small print the process is definitely stacked against the buyer)

I rushed to the second location and picked up some coins I was surprised to see it was an old run down coin store (not an estate sale as advertised). I got there about an hour before closing and had to wait a bit I picked up my items and took them to the car to inspect I was surprised to see that an item I had bid over $200 for that was advertised as various USA coins actually consisted of wheat pennies and was barely worth $30. The listing did not say they were pennies but various USA coins. Based on only two pictures it was reasonable to assume by the dates that there were some silver coins in the lot. I went back to the store to complain. The owner pretended not to know it was just pennies but based on the pictures taken and the misleading description it was obvious they were using max sold as a partner to dump their junk at auction on unsuspecting bidders. I said that is not what I thought i was getting and he smiled and said too bad it's done I went home figuring I'd turn to max sold for some justice (there were no staff on site to complain to) again i was told I was in violation of their terms so out of luck

This is how they take advantage of first time customers. They are only worried about their bottom line they don't check the listings for accuracy and let the sellers rip off the buyers beware I got scammed for over $500. Will never trust this company again and will spread the truth to everyone to stay away from scammers the grief is not worth it.

Overall I have no regrets. I love the concept, it's a valuable and clever service that's offered, and I was satisfied with the end result. But the customer service (or lack thereof) along the way was beyond frustrating in so many ways. I'm a seller and I managed my auction myself. Having never done this before, I had a lot of questions. But often phones weren't answered, voicemail boxes gave no indication if I had reached the appropriate mailbox of the Seller Support department, calls took hours to be returned, and emails weren't returned for several days (which was totally mind-boggling). Having said that, Andrea was amazing and always very helpful and on the ball, along with with a few other customer service reps I was lucky enough to connect with sometimes (my apologies that their names escape me right now). Others were downright snarky, if I managed to connect at all. Also, there were too many mistakes for my comfort level. The scheduling of pickup time slots got screwed up... twice. And still wasn't done right after the second time. As for the actual auction service, my main suggestion would be that minimum bid amounts be allowed to be set by seller. I withheld more expensive things from my auction and sold them on other platforms where I was in control of how much I would accept for them, rather than risk them being scooped up for $1 on MaxSold. This was an inconvenience to me, and loss of revenue to Max Sold, that could easily have been rectified by a minimum bid feature. Having said all that, I will still recommend the service... but with lots of caveats to manage the expectations of those I refer. Also, the cataloguing app can use some improvements. I do appreciate overall that this option was available to me as a way to clear out my home when downsizing, and am satisfied enough with the proceeds of the sale. So thank you for that. Please keep improving. I think you're onto something really amazing here.

I have been participating in MaxSold auctions for over a year attended countless auctions and conducted my own Seller managed Sale. I think this is one of the best essential services I have ever seen.

As a buyer, I shop hundreds of items per week, year round from the comfort of my tablet, instead of running around to garage sales and auctions, I regularly pick up incredible deals, made good profits reselling items, greatly benefited my household budget and met lovely friendly people. I understand that for this opportunity, it may occur 1 out of 40 times that I dont get exactly what I expected to get (Gee, I wish life in general would be that kind), that I may do some work to pick up items, and that there will be some items that came as part of the lot that I can donate to charities. (my local Salvation Army and recycling centre, treat me like a hero every time they see me, which gives me guilt because I saved or made money getting what I wanted and am still able to donate. Dont cry for me, I can deal with that guilt :).

Years ago I had to liquidate an estate of a family member, and it was 3 months of labor intensive, favor asking, money spending, time consuming hell ending in watching and paying for 2 waste bins of stuff I knew others could use, be hauled away. Just recently I had occasion to do the same for another family member who as it happens was in the same area and had comparable amount and type of stuff. Well, with about 2 days of effort to remove keeper items 2-3 days to stage and post the Maxsold auction, half a day attending to an army of buyers doing all the work of dismantling, packing and moving 95% of the contents from the home and another half a day cleaning up the rest, we were done. For that week of easy effort received a payment from Maxsold that was easily triple the average pay a Canadian makes in a week. My costs? Some green tape from the dollar store and lunch for those who helped out. I was in shock by how much easier the Maxsold experience was. I have great pity for anyone still using disposal services for this type of requirement.

For myself it gives me great joy to participate in preserving materials rather than going to landfill, saving money, and having the option to not assist billionaire retail Corporations in getting any richer than they already are. Maxsold lets me do these things and I do not know any other service that does.

Thank you

To start off. I want to say i have spent over $1700 on 20 auctions in last 2.5 years. Lately. There have been a lot of "seller run" auctions... which i didnt get at the time... but are the biggest scams on the internet. These people get to list... and take pictures. Of all of their items... and say whatever they want. And no matter how bad the item is... maxsold will do nothing for you.

Case in point... i spent $300+ on 3 computers that were listed "great for a student". I was a chromebook. The other 2 were apple. When i picked them up i realized the chromebook had no power cord... and there was no way to tell how old the apples were. Turns out. They were so old... they were no longer supported by apple... and couldnt even download the newest safari... which means they were incapable of even using a web browser. I was given a $66 refund. Basically "we know you got hosed... but you arent getting paid because you didn't plug the computers in when you picked them up" (i posted a picture of their response). So the only way these were ever "good for a student" is if the student was studying "how to disassemble ancient computers". No responsibility from this company... they basically take their 10% on top of what you bid in exchange for the picture they post! No standing behind their VIP members (yes they asked me to be one)... Or anyone for that matter... just word their items all funky. Like "untested"(that being said... this certain lot DID NOT say untested... but made you assume that they were all in working order). It's a SELLER RUN auction. Please tell me how they are untested? I will now be filing a complaint with the BBB... and my credit card company since the REFUND button on their website is just as pathetic as the rest of the company.

Unless you have a great eye looking at horrible photography... stay away from the used car lots of auction sites. BUYER AND SELLER BEWARE.

UPDATE (picture 3): I ended up getting a FULL REFUND... AND getting banned! How very 3rd grade of them.

UPDATE #2: IF you take a chance with them. And get screwed like I did... just... in their words... "threaten" to contact your credit card company. You will surely get blacklisted... but you will get your money back.

Maxsold has two models - Maxsold Managed and Seller Managed. In one offering Maxsold is never on site and therefore has no visibility of the items sold. In the other, our teams catalog and thus have a bit more awareness of the items. That said, regardless of who is cataloging, both honest mistakes and dishonest actions can occur - thus, Maxsold uses a transparent claims process that has worked for centuries in the live auction world - specifically, the buyer can inspect the item in full view of the auction staff, other buyers (and sometimes the Seller) and make a claim (partial/full refund) if the item is found to be in a condition other than what was described before leaving the site. In both the bidder terms (www.maxsold.com/terms) and on the buyer invoice it states:

CLAIMS: ENSURE YOU INSPECT items at pickup (and preview if available) and IMMEDIATELY inform the MaxSold team (or Seller if Seller Managed) of any issues related to mis-cataloging of condition (remembering that you are purchasing used items in AS IS WHERE IS condition). By departing from the pickup site you acknowledge that you have all your items and that you are satisfied with them and/or have brought up issues with the Lead on site. NO CLAIMS ARE PERMITTED AFTER REMOVING ITEMS FROM THE PREMISES as condition issues cannot be validated once items are released into your possession. If required, bring an expert to validate purchases at pickup. We are not responsible for the acts or omissions of the Seller.

This ensures fairness and transparency to both the buyer and the seller. When a buyer accepts an item without inspection, they are waving any potential claim issues as, once the item leaves, there’s no way for Maxsold or the seller to know when the (potential) issue was created. Was it lost in transit? Damaged on the way home? Or is it merely a buyer trying to take advantage of the Seller after ignoring a perfectly transparent opportunity to make a claim.

Bidders that accept and live by the terms love that everything starts at $1 with the highest bidder winning. It’s a fair and transparent model for those who can accept and abide by the terms and conditions laid out (and agreed to) prior to bidding.

The lot in question is available for review below - as an independent looking at this, ask yourself if you would walk away with a $250+ purchase unless you had confirmed it was exactly what you expected if you knew that was your only change to make a claim?
https://maxsold.maxsold.com/auction/12795/item/apple-imac-laptop-and-toshiba-chromebook-1175812/

The issue is, if the buyer had concerns about cords, serial numbers, support from apple, working condition, etc. - it all could have been validated on site. In this case, the buyer chose not to do that. Despite this, Maxsold provided a partial refund (against policy). Finally, when the Seller used threatening language and made us aware that they would reverse their credit card, we removed them due to not accepting any responsibility for their action / inaction to deal with the problem on site, during the pickup, as promised by them in the terms. Had the buyer taken at least partial responsibility and not threatened to breach their agreed to terms and conditions again, they would not have been banned.

MaxSold continues to reinvest all funds made in the pursuit of its vision to Sell. Everything. Simply for downsizing and estate clients without judgement:

No compassion. No help.
September 9, 2020

Long story sort. I was given a cross (12 - 14 years ago) by my now deceased husband that was stolen while he was alive, by a person known to our family. I didn't file a police report, hoping this person would own up to stealing it. I have looked everywhere for this cross as it appears to be a one of a kind. (He got it from ebay). I look constantly on Maxsold, EBTH, estate sales, Ebay, and, in the beginning pawn shops. On September 2nd I found it online in a Maxsold auction in Westbourough MA, Ruggles Street. By the time I went to bid on it, bidding was closed. I immediately contacted MS. I was told they could tell me NOTHING. They did try to contact the seller. So they say, and supposedly they never responded. Through many phone calls and emails someone let it slip that the buyer was from out of state. I've begged them to contact the buyer on my behalf and explain the situation and I would gladly purchase it from them. Radio silence. I would at least like the hometown(if it's a large Metropolitan city) of the buyer so I can concentrate my efforts of searching online in one area. Radio Silence. They are protecting their contract and the buyer and sellers names. Great, would they be breaking confidentiality by telling me the state?
I used to purchase from Maxsold. There were problems. I went to pick up items that weren't "available" and never caused a stink. I've gone to pick up items that are in dingy smelly basements, placed on the floor and I've had to carry them quite a distance. None of this bothered me. Now that I see the level of care and compassion this company has and it's refusal to help me attempt to deal with the buyer and pay for something that is a cherished item to me I can never say anything good about them. The cross I'm speaking about is the colorful one to the left of the MS card. Please, if anyone knows anything, speak up!

We are sorry that this customer has lost a cherished family item. However, we cannot share contract/personal information regarding our customers. In certain circumstances, we do reach out to customers to resolve unique situations but ultimately it is up to the customer if they are willing to support given these types of inquiries lie far outside our process. In all cases, we are trying to ensure everyone’s safety as, outside our pickup process, we cannot monitor the transactions.
Regarding this customer’s other complaints, we do strive for a reliable, efficient, safe, and transparent process but we appreciate there is always more to do when striving for a world class customer experience. Additionally, the vast majority of all auctions we conduct are done so from a person’s home in order to help them move forward. In turn, local bidders have the opportunity to place bids (or not) knowing where and when they have to be to remove their purchases. We are sorry if this customer isn’t happy with the living situations of some of our Sellers, but ultimately we are in business to help clear items they don’t have room for anymore, wherever those items may be.
Should this, or any, customer decide to bid, I would encourage them to reach out support@maxsold.com in future regarding missing items. We do have a process to resolve these sorts of issues so long as they are made known to us at time of pickup.

I have purchased items from Maxsold perviously with no issues... I believe that each city has a team and this review is about the team that looks after the Mississauga area.

I have been blacklisted by the company due to this incident... this is what I wrote to them when concerning the blacklisting and never got a response.

I was living in ottawa at the time and bid with taking into consideration the description as well as the photos... when I arrived in toronto after investing in a rental SUV to pick up my purchases I was shocked that the items that I paid market value for had a bent end panel support and a hole punched through the back... both were never disclosed in the photos or description and hence I would have never bid on that item at all.(I have photos to justify) Another item again was the same situation and the only written indication was wear with age and at no time was there photos or description again about the pitting on the metal which has a big devaluing of the item(again, I have my own photos)... pitting only happens when exposed to dampness... not age wear. Again, I would not have bid if there was proper disclosure. You are right... I tried to resolve it with your staff and was treated poorly by the staff there. I did speak to someone on the phone who did seem to look after me and then was shocked a week later when I was blacklisted. If these items were $10 or $20 purchase I would not have bothered but the two were close to over $800. I, understand that you hold your clients to high standards and I would have to agree that I would hold your service to that same standard. Your company failed me terribly and I feel it unjust that I pay the price for your staff's inability to do their job properly. That job is to be more informative concerning the condition. I should have asked in return from your company for the value of the rental and milage but I eat that to experience.

Dear Francesca - As stated on-site, over the phone and over eamil - we are sorry about the error - we gave you a full refund as soon as we could, that's all we could do. Fortunately, these errors are very few overall, our staff do our best to prevent these issues, and we monitor these problems closesly. We pride on a level of customer satisfaction that's highest in the auction industry, with a process to deal with any issues that come up (as you can see in all of these reviews.) We understand you feel this was unfair even with a full refund - we are sorry.

LOTS of problems
October 21, 2020

I chose to use Max Sold because I needed to sell off most of my household belongings including almost all of the furniture in a very short time frame. This worked and the sale was pretty successful. What was not were the two pickup days and the post-sale customer service. The woman in charge of my pickup had a serious attitude problem and became increasingly rude and aggressive towards me because the items were not assembled the way they should have been. I paid one of Max Sold's partners over a thousand dollars to do the organization and listing at the beginning of the process, and when the pickup team arrived, they were not happy with the way things were handled. There was WAY too little time and too few staff assigned for pickup.

In addition, I was promised by my MS rep that the large items would be picked up at the end of the second day to allow pickup of smaller items on table tops and shelves to be picked up first. This was completely false. The very first person to show up had bought a 5-shelf rack full of items. The rep also assured me that the staff on site would make sure no damage was done to the house by those removing furniture. This was also false. Since there wasn't enough staff to monitor the buyers, no one was watching as large pieces of furniture were moved out, causing damage to the walls on two separate occasions.

After the pickup was over, I was unable to get anyone from customer service on the phone regarding the problems. It seemed no one was willing to take my calls. After calling twice per day, every day, I finally got my rep on the phone. He didn't want to hear about the issues with the pickup team, and wanted ME to be the go-between between Max Sold and the rental management company regarding the damages. This process was supposed to make my life easier. It was supposed to all be handled professionally by MS. I had to insist he contact the management company and deal with them directly, which he did.

Then came the sale report and my check. There were FIVE items that were refunded, none of which were discussed with me. I know that four of them were exactly as described and accepted by the buyers upon pickup. The fifth was a printer that was missing a power cord. The buyer researched on his phone a replacement cord and chose to take the printer as-is. Why weren't any of these refunds discussed with me? One was a very expensive stained glass window which was in perfect condition, with the hanging hardware, exactly as described. So the buyer got a beautiful piece of art FOR FREE?!?

To say there were serious bumps in the road is an understatement. My advice is to either do a self-managed sale where you organize the items and handle the pickup, or have them (not a partner) handle the entire process, but NOT while you are trying to pack and move. I'm mostly happy with my check, but this was still WAY more aggravation than it should have been.
