Imgur goes to great lengths to police their platforms but does so in favor of high output users. So it becomes a power dynamic and if you say something they disagree with especially on Sunday when there are no moderators, then they will multi report you and get you a 24 hour ban in which you cannot defend yourself. They literally practice and allow censorship, but in a narrative changing way. Very toxic and allows abusers to feel they have a place to dominate others. They added filters now to block unwanted tags, political serial posters, and now you can also block anyone who harasses you or you suspect may be dis genuine, etc. Doesn't change the fact that many users are simply to is and can still see and harm your content activity.
Imgur does not even pretend anymore, at this point, to be unbiased or considerate of any even keeled or respectful perspectives. The bias is extremely apparent. In an age of extreme partisanship in all corners of the Internet, Imgur manages to do the impossible: it stands out. There really isn't another site that reaches this levels of blatant disregard for objectivity that the platform does. My words really don't matter, though: just look for yourself. Provoking anger, either amongst its supporters or detractors, seems to be the only goal. I suppose, somehow, that this emotional surge is supposed to be positive in the service of some greater cause, but a permanently angry and incensed population seems to be the opposite of helpful to me in attempting to solve the issues in the world, no matter what your perspective is. Imgur is what it tries so hard to tell you that it isn't: an angry, fuming monster spewing rage at the invisible "enemies" it claims to be fighting.
Used to be a good fun site but they cater too much to ad revenue, new policies, and other things which made it great
As a major image hosting site, Imgur have existed for years and still outrunning their other competitor, a good place to post pics that you take yourself and can be done without even signing up with them, but if you want to ask for the user opinion about your photo, I don't recommend you do that on Imgur because their user can be so toxic that it will hurt you just by reading the comment they posted. Sometimes can be a fun site but then suddenly everyone start hating each other for some ridiculous reason.
When you post just for you. You get downvoted just because it isn't for others to be idk happy or laugh? Like idk, but besides that it's okay and alot better than photobucket. If you're a private person just change your settings to unlisted
If there's a way to get downvoted on a site, I am going to get downvoted. A lot. More than pretty much any other user who contributes to said site. Any site that allows downvotes or negative ratings to be publicly displayed, and you'll find me with a negative reputation on comments that, if they were posted by any other user, would get a positive score.
Imgur is worse than most others about this. They are quick and fierece about downvoting content that doesn't fit into their narrow 4chanesque world view.
The site itself is cool though and you can find interesting images. Shame about the losers that use it.
This is a good place to upload pics fast if you want to share them, but their homepage is really random, not necessarily bad, but it can get odd.
Easy to use, beautifully designed, very user-friendly. That said, the community is just reddit-lite with the top images being stuff that blew up on reddit and the people being only slightly more mature than 9gag and less angry than reddit.
I'm going to focus only on the negatives here, as the praise has already been said.
My main concern is that fact that Imgur uses no less than 40 trackers to mine information about their users which they then sell. Every privacy-minded individual should be concerned about this fact. Using the Ghostery plugin alongside with Adblock blocks them all, however. I would not recommend using Imgur without Ghostery or Do Not Track Plus.
My second concern is the comments. They're truly the worst of the worst The comments section of submissions is basically a popularity contest to see who can make the most ironic, humorous, or pop culture reference-laden comment the quickest. Seldom will you find anything intelligent in the comments.
Lastly, the content. Upon visiting the site, the front page is loaded with horrible memes and such stupidities. But if you delve deeper, such as into the /r/ reddit categories, it gets better.
I was okay with uploading images on this website. I found out about the gallery and decided to uploaded pictures of my best beans. I was followed with downvotes to the underworld. I don't think children these days remember the good old days with beans.
My updates:
There are a lot of toxic people on imgur for some reason. They will be quick to downvote even basic pictures from new users. They will also post inappropriate comments quite often. The interface itself is a bit clunky as well.
My original review:
I cannot add anything special that wasn't posted on the previous review. However, I can concur with a lot of it. Imgur is a very simple site that allows you to either register or sign in using Twitter, Facebook, Google, or Yahoo credentials. Everything about the design of the site is sleek and simple.
It is yet another thumbs up / thumbs down site that will allow you to browse a boatload of images from users across the world.
REASONS TO USE:
[1] Fun to browse vast library of images
[2] Ad free
REASONS TO LOSE:
[1] You prefer another image browser site
Imgur is the easiest way to discover and enjoy the magic of the Internet.
