ID.me is the de facto personal identity authentication process for the U.S. government. I have no knowledge around their contract (though I'm now curious and have been for some time), but they've earned their keep with thoroughness, security and, up to the present, privacy of data.
If you have Big Brother concerns, it's well you should, as this data has the highest potential of misuse in the hands of bad actors or malevolent government. But to protect your online identity and secure interactions with government websites (IRS, military, and so forth), this is the game and it's well played.
The process is so simple to follow. The only drawback is it is very slow when the video is taken and the pictures are uploading but it is to be expected. Overall it was an excellent experience.

My camera and microphone work, but didn't wotk with ID.me. I have used ID.me before. A simple two step verification should be good enough. Now they have added a third and fourth step. I was unable to sign in to the IRS and complete my tax payment because of a glich in your app.

This site needs allot of work done. Good luck finding the right info you need and don't have to go thru every tab to find the right thing. I'm probably gonna charged penalties because the site doesn't clearly tell you where to go to see what you need. It's all bunched up and feels like the site was made to give false hope. Not sure if my payment plan went through, no email to confirm it, just a page that says you're good but no follow up acceptance has been seen.
