I have 23 years Fed time and the ID to prove it however official government documents matching what they ask for were not good enough. My military and alumni went right through. Go figure.

If you use a birth certificate, you need to scan both the front and the back.
I do not recommend using a passport, it was hard for me to get a good digital picture of my passport.
I do recommend using a W2. The W2 was already in electronic format, so it was the perfect document for me to use.
And if your docs are not accepted, don't worry, the video verification step is quick and efficient.

I selected not using a smart phone because I'm not very good with using it except for calls, texts and some video watching. But it made me use it anyways. It took a very long time for me to get this done. I don't understand why the upload of the drivers license STILL needed a video? It was confusing to use the cellphone one minute then the PC the next. Then back to the Cell, I just glad its over with and I certainly hope it worked. If not, I will ignore the IRS online website altogether and use a paper check the old way with a stamp and envelope.

ID.me now has biometric data to identify me. I needed to identify myself in order to clear up the IRS's difficulty in determining my identity before they could process my 2022 federal income tax return. It was valuable to me to have a process that allowed me to prove my identity to the IRS.
Now that the process is finished, I don't want ID.me to retain my data. There's no legitimate reason for them to hold on to it. And, there is currently no benefit to me that someone has my biometric data. I want ID.me to either ask users to opt in to retaining the data for future uses by the user or to make opting out of permission for ID.me to retain my biometrics as easy as pressing a button.
I gave two stars to ID.me because I needed to speak to a live person via video link to complete this process. The person who helped me was calm and professional while also maintaining a friendly attitude.
