BEWARE: HORRIBLE experience. My first experience with Getaround was absurd. I reserved a car and received a notice that the reservation was canceled 3 minutes before the start time. I was already at the parking spot. Then I was booked into a car that would have taken 40 minutes to travel to. I cannot believe a reservation can be canceled so close to the reserved time and the explanation given was that it was the owner's request. I will never try this service again.
Extremely dangerous situation with a car that broke down after driving it 2 blocks. At this point the car has been left behind but i waited over 4 hours for get around to send help. They would not tell me anything on the last time the car was serviced. They made me wait for 4 hours before telling me I could leave the car and on top of that they would not refund me or rebook me until they determined the car didn't break down because of me. Mind you i drove the car 2 blocks and had it for less than 10 minutes but they wouldn't help me until they determined it wasn't my fault. Extremely dangerous cars to be renting.
They asked me to drive an illegally.
The headlight went out. Took get around and the owner 3 days to get back to me. At 3am return calls. Also they did not offer a different rental.
They left me stranded 600 miles away from home when they locked me out. They are not an honorable company and only after your credit card.
This company needs to be sued and shut down very illegal activity customer service works from home and does not do well with customers. They turned off the car that I rented because I was 30 minutes late I was stranded because the car wouldn't turn back on so I had to pay an additional 121 just for them to turn the car back on for me to get home. Do not rent from them a lawsuit is an for them as well.
Please save your money and go someplace else. This company will fee you to death. Read their fee schedule it will frighten you hopefully into going somewhere else. I tried renting from them to drive with Uber. After working all night making around $225 after Getaround fees and gas I ended up making $50 for 9 hours work, I'm going to get a weekly rental from a reputable company but can't for a few days. I decided to rent today again and now they have starting charging deposits that range from $150-$300 a day. And they hold it for 7 days, then it takes another 3-10 days to get it back. If I rent four my usual 4 days a week then I will have $600-$1200 in deposits that I won't get back for probable 2 weeks
Whatever they use to monitor the cars never works and always shows less than a full tank of gas then charge you $12.35 a gallon for gas, even though the car was just filled with gas.
They fee you got everything, their so called insurance is liability only, you have to have pay an additional fee for their insurance. They also charge as much as $3000 for any perceived damage, real or not. If you go through a toll road and it has a license plate reader account you are charged double for processing fees, they have lists of fees that they can't explain. If you call them on anything they give a canned answer that's it's their system and they can't change it.

Every time I tried to rent a car I had to reverify my account. It held up my rental for 2 days until I called... so I had to call them EVERY time I rented a car. Their technology isn't capable of hosting the data so it's searchable? Who knows... but they should!
Our last effort I had to call to rent. When we showed up to get the car it had a flat tire! The car was undriveable, we didn't have time to get to an airport to get another car and we missed my niece's wedding!
Then they still charge me for the car... it took 4 calls and 2+ weeks to finally get reimbursed, then they promised me $100 promo code but the next time I tried to rent a car and use the promo code, the verification was even MORE ridiculous.
They promised $100 sent to the credit card used for the final rental instead of a the promo code... that has never come in. I will NEVER use this service again.
They continuously charged my card and then refused to verify my identity. The customer service does not help either. Better off trying a different company, save your time.
A guest stole my 2020 Jeep 37 hours ago! Getaround has not returned any of my calls!
The police will do nothing since it was a rental with Getaround.
*BEWARE*! DON'T GET INVOLVED WITH GETAROUND. This is a failing company which has disconnected their phone lines, refusing to listen to customers, refusing to fix cars, and completely scamming people. Each getaround car has a dead battery and missing keys, they're also filthy because no one cleans them! They will take your money, your time, and YOU'LL NEVER HEAR FROM THEM AGAIN. BEWARE!
I picked up Jose's car on Tuesday August 9 and returned it on Saturday August 13. Upon arriving, there was a terrible smell in the car and I still do not know what it was from. The car was also late arriving back from its previous guest and I was texted by the owner apologizing (I have screenshots of these texts). The owner also texted me saying, "I didn't have time to check on it," prior to me receiving it.
However, 17 days after I returned the car (August 30) I was emailed that I was being charged $350 out of nowhere for smoking and pet hair and urine in the car.
1) I do not and have never smoked and did not do so in Jose's car.
2) I do not own any pet and did not bring any pets into the car during the visit.
Yet, after 17 days, Jose had sent me $300 and $50 cleaning charges.
I was livid as these were blatant lies and I recently learned from other Getaround users that this is not out of the ordinary and that owners can charge guests with charges whenever they want and Getaround stands behind them.
Beware to any who would rent a car with this man as he will attempt to charge you as much as he can, no matter how long ago you rented the car and no matter if he even checked on the car between guests. I have the text messages and documentation to prove my claims. I recommend looking on other sites (Turo.com is a good one) to rent your car.
Their business model is to scam people by faking damage and charging them whatever they feel like, or just enough to dissuade people from seeking legal recourse.
The car reservation with Getaround France was cancelled without explanation just 48h before, just saying "the car was not avalaible".

GetAround markets itself as a car hire company, similar to Hertz, Avis, Alamo and a myriad of other car rental companies. Unlikely traditional brick & mortar car rental agencies, GetAround is pier-to-pier, which means the vehicles are privately owned and insured, and distributed across cities and not at one central hub like your local airport. GetAround still markets its vehicles and their rental prices are comparable to other leading car rental companies, which implies the company should be held to the same professional standards. However, GetAround is failing to live up to those standards. The company knowingly, and willfully is renting out vehicles that are not in appropriate condition (filthy exteriors and interiors), and more importantly, is renting vehicles that are a safety hazard (low tire pressure, check engine lights, etc). Lastly, when GetAround is made aware of these failings, they do not address them by taking steps to remedy the problem but instead sweep away customer complaints. The company's car rental practices are a hazard to road safety, and driver/passenger safety.
At first I was excited to learn about this car sharing service. I can find cars close to me, 24-hours, for less than a normal rental company. Then I used it a couple of time and each time the car I used was more disgusting than the last. Filthy windows and no windshield washer fluid. Literal gunk in the cup holders and other car storage areas. Boxes of half-empty fast food under the seats. An empty bag of marijuana in the glove box! People rent these cars but then don't clean them up--can't even take their trash out of the car--and then you get the car next! Instead of cleaning them, some people load them up with car fresheners so you get a car that smells like moldy pizza, weed, and old-man cologne. So disgusting. Do not use. Pay extra for the rental companies that clean and maintain the cars. There's a reason why they're more expensive. No one from customer service nor any of the car owners (or owner--as just about ALL of the cars in NYC are owned by the same person, how is that possible?!) have ever responded to my messages about the status of the cars and then when I rent the same car a month later it's more disgusting than before. The saying "You get what you pay for" is perfect here. I used getaround three times. I will not be using them again.
CAVEAT EMPTOR - BUYER BEWARE
Think very carefully before you hire a car through GETAROUND. You can ZIP around London with a more ethical company paying less and offered more value added service.
After you have booked something you cannot change it. The price only goes up. It cannot go down even if you change requirements that should reduce the fee.
They will find a reason to strip money out of your deposit. You cannot speak to anyone. They will not reply to your emails. They impose unilateral judgements & price penalties with no evidence.
Greedy car owners will try to suck more cash out of you on the flimsiest of reasons.
GETAROUND will support them.
Finally I phoned the LLP Registered Company address to make a complaint. After that I finally received an email reply. A second phone call ten days later triggered some of my money back.
It took me the best part of ten weeks to get £200 refunded. And a lot of hard work. I do not believe they would have refunded me if I had not kept at them and the LLP on a regular basis across so many weeks.
Hire a car from anyone but not GETAROUND.
I am now signed up with a proper company. ZIPPING around London in the same model of car for less money. Fully insured. Congestion charge included. With a call-centre, people to talk to and systems in place to protect you from apparent extortion.
People like me who need a hire car service have far better options than renting from this horrible company.

I rented once with these scammers. Never again. I was on a time crunch for an appointment, and I forgot the specific return time I had set. Instead of sending me a courtesy reminder via text, Getaround sends me an email. Who is likely to be checking emails while they're driving? The $50 late fee was more than the rental fee…and a crafty way to steal (I mean "earn") money. They said it was because of the income I kept from the car owner from not being able to rent his car for that time period, but conveniently didn't provide any proof indicating in fact there was someone else that wanted to rent that car.
As if that wasn't rough, I was late for my return because I was looking for a gas station to replace the fuel I used. The rental was a basic Chevrolet with approximately 26 miles to the gallon. For a 6 mile drive (round trip), and putting a gallon of gas in the car prior to return, it is logically impossible to pick up the car with a gas tank 78% full and return is 62% full. I even submitting a photo of the fuel indicator as part of the return procedure, and Getaround conveniently lost that.
Avoid this company at all costs and through these and similar messages of truth, this unscrupulous organization will be bankrupt and nothing more than an inconvenient memory hopefully very soon.
They try to steal your money claiming late return or fuel charges. Now i video everything and send in proof since they cant scam me they try to block me from the platform. They need to be shut down
Terrible experience with Getaround, the car was in a terrible state, I called customer service to know if I could cancel with a full refund, I was clearly told I could and the next day they charged me for the whole rental! WHAT A JOKE!
Also impossible to get in touch with the customer service once the problem happened! UNREACHABLE.
I rented a car from Getaround when I visited Belgium for two days. I had had great experiences with it in the US, but this one was not okay. There were various issues, like the listing saying the car had AC but the refrigerant had been out for over a year according to reviews. However, the largest issue was the key and the ensuing issues. This was a Hyundai car with a cheap folding key. Although it turned the car on when we first got in, when we turned the key off it fell apart. We reported it to the owner the next morning, and based on internet research this is a known issue due to wear and tear of this key (the car/key is 9 years old).
Because the damage wasn't reported when we first got the car (because the key didn't fall apart until an hour later), we were told we were responsible... despite the many links I sent showing this is a known issue. We were charged 30€, 250€, AND 170€ on top of the rental fee for the car for this wear and tear damage. The company has refused to respond to my multiple requests to discuss and continues to debit my account without permission.
Note that I paid for the additional suggested insurance that limits any damages to 250€, and this is with that insurance.
Answer: It's a scam, they are super quick to let you join, but once you're in you will be penalized for things you didn't do. They take as much money as they can, then they don't even reply anymore.
