Sure, there are some fringe racists from the right on that site, but I've seen as many if not more bigots from the left. The reason you see people here saying it's an alt-right site is because they are liberals who interpret everything that doesn't subscribe to the liberal narrative as being racist. (Example: explaining why you are opposed to CRT for your young children or saying that singing the Black National Anthem at every football game is divisive rather than unifying will get you called a white nationalist or a racist member of the KKK.)
That said, it is ridiculously moderated. The mods are given full authority to ban posters if they happen to disagree with a post, one where there are no insults, no bullying, no bad language, etc., and posts that lay out good arguments against liberal policies can disappear without warning as well.
It is good forum per its design. Very versatile, millions of members.
Problem with it is somewhere else.
It has very trigger happy moderators that, more than often, consider their personal opinions ultimate measure to which posts to be permitted and which ones closed or deleted.
Also, some moderators, as they do post their opinions in threads, take responses personally and, literally, will stalk respondents and hassle their posts.
Some areas are lacking this, like Automotive. Some, are plane toxic, like Religion and Spirituality, in this respect.
Forum is censored ruthlessly.
Unfortunately, I could not find a better one, as Quora has terrible unfriendly layout. Citi is nice in that aspect.
But, it's either please moderators or, be banned. There is little to none freedom of speech there. And I happen to know, what I am talking about, being super mod at a very large forum myself.
I'm with the majority that posted negative reviews. I'd been a member for around 8 years without any problems or bad experiences. This changed when a 'troll' started bothering me for no apparent reason. Two of the mods were initially supportive, so it was like I was sucker-punched when they suddenly turned against me and one of the main mods said I was banned for life. Curious, I Googled to see if anyone else had had similar experiences, and many people did- all minorities. As it didn't occur to me to change my screen name, one of the mods actually followed (stalked) me onto Topix and started harassing me there. Upon learning who the main owner/admin was I emailed him, but he never replied. What irritates me is it presents itself as a community where everyone is welcome- but that's not the case at all.
Site is run by old Polish catholic fascists; mods are petty and vindictive; If you're an American who is used to basic principles of free speech and honest exchange of ideas, steer clear!
If you do spend time here, be prepared to deal with racist, sexist, or otherwise retrograde rants about the evils of liberalism. This is tolerated, in fact, encouraged. Don't expect any moderation of the outright hate that is the norm here.
That is, unless the mods disagree with your politics. If that's the case, be prepared to have your comments arbitrarily deleted, threads locked if they upset the mods' sensibilities, and infractions if you "hurt their feelings." "Trolling" is against the rules, and defined roughly as "upsetting the fat 75 year old Republican women who run the joint."
In short, be prepared to deal with being insulted repeatedly by conservatives, and then banned or given infractions for responding in-kind.
Some people are unhinged, angry right wing political types. They are allowed to blatantly insult you. If you retaliate or otherwise stand up for yourself, you will be silenced by right wing moderators who agree with them.
This has been the trend here for at least 10 years. Expect racism, hatred, bigotry, and blatant lies to be the norm, sort of like Fox news on steroids.
The forum mods are bat crap crazy Gestapo! They delete posts for bull crap reasons because they do not agree with a poster's political views. So many better and less Nazi-like enforced rules on other political forums.
I have been reading City Data for years. I can agree with them to a certain extent but not on an over all basis. It fails to create a realistic view of what is posted. I read posts I know first hand about and they are factual but twisted. Really unrealistic. It needs to be a little more open minded in my opinion.
I first started using City Data to get information an upcoming move. Whenever a new person talks about moving to WA state or any state, the same people come on and talk up the good stuff. Aside from WA rain, no one mentions anything bad. The site is full of realtors who will say anything to make a sale. There is too much dishonesty and beware of hiring a realtor from here.
If you want to go to the Alt med health forums, the mods are all pro medicine and will frequently shut down threads that don't agree with their views. They are fine with a certain group of pro med people making fun of those on Alt medicine. If you defend yourself, it's a good way to get banned for awhile. The pro med trolls never get banned.
The political forum is crazy, I don't go there anymore.
City Data is full of dishonest people and trolls. On the plus side, I've also met some nice people and it has good dog and animal information. It's a public site, so be aware and don't give out personal information.
I am so hurt by these negative reviews! City Data is my whole life. I am a mod. I spend all day looking up posts, deleting anything that's I don't like, and banning users. Now you guys are trying to get me fired from my job. It will ruin my power trip. I feel so important when I can delete posts and ban users. Try a little kindness, it goes a long way.
If you're planning on moving to a different state city this site is pretty good there are of course thousands of people on the site and they will help you right and left.
There's work, psychology, personal experiences and non romantic problems stuff like that general things once you get into the politics well some people say it's right wing some people say it's left wing some people say the moderators are too heavy-handed some say they're not heavy-handed enough.
This is also really good is that you can direct mail a message to posters asking questions and probably I'd say 95% of them happily respond with good information and helpful suggestions.
The rest are mean nasty cranky and ignorant...
These reviews are totally fabricated, obviously made by abusers, bullies and trolls. City-Data is an informative site and also has a very large forum where you can discuss practically anything. I've been a member for many years since almost it's inception. Yes I have been chastised and even banned one time but that was on me. I was behaving badly. Stop being a bunch of whiney babies and enjoy the site for what it is, informative and social. It's what you make it, I just avoid trolls and subject matters that get heated, it's very enjoyable that way. It's not right wing, racist or anything like that, they just have certain rules to be followed and if they aren't you'll receive warnings and/or infractions. If you behave yourself there's not a damn problem.
I finally walked away from city data. My issue was with political & other controversy. The mods favor left leaners if not outright Trump haters. They cheer on our present bumbler.
The senior areas are rife with self important elderly. Most are spouting about the trips they've taken or will take. Constantly one upmanship regarding retirement and how much $$$$ they will get when they retire.
They usually remove political sniping in other forums, but not always. They also will not respond to explain why your post was deleted except to tag it falsely
If you like to enjoy discussion, don't waste your time there
Finally a place that lets red blooded Americans speak their mines. Many sites cater to liberals or democrats. This forum appeals to real Americans not the Obama crowd. Trump supporting Americans can freely express their politically incorrect views without having to worry about offending sensitive snowflakes. Information is accurate and honest. No filter, just straight talk and none of that mainstream liberal garbage you see on other social media places. I love it. God bless city data forum and America.
Not a pleasant place to be at all. The Politics & Controversies sub-forum is run by a moderator who goes by a name that begins with "I" and who runs the sub-forum like a little autocratic dictator who will ban you just for saying something innocuous that they don't like, but this person has no problem letting all sorts of horrible stuff from right-wingers through with no action. I was banned for "trolling" for 6 weeks just for making an innocent remark that I thought when the SC overturned Roe v Wade it would cause rioting. Stay away from this stupid place.
I have been a member of City Data for many years, getting positive rating points for helping folks with their questions about Wyoming and Colorado. I posted a real estate add for 35 acres in Wyoming and a troll started ripping on my add about how worthless the land was and things that had no added value to my post. I reported the posts three times. The mods closed my posting and put me on probation for defending myself against this $#*!. I will no longer be using this site as it is obvious that they are biased and only support their own agendas. I hope everyone will boycott them.
I registered an account to post in a thread about an area/neighborhood I've lived since 1985 that has gone down hill lately. They don't want people with a lifetime extensive history of a city participating in a thread apparently - only tourists who don't know much. I was hoping there might be some people to discuss issues and attend city meetings and push the local gov to act. This is not the place for constructive discussion of real issues. Must be heavy handed moderated by people with special interests. Straight up censorship. I would not trust a website managed like that at all.
Most people there are moron idiot fans of Trump including the Mods, they suspend your account for fun and remove your thread if it's against Trump. You have no recourse they do what they want. You can't even discuss the moderation or you get suspended or banned.
The Mods will edit posts for people who like who are Republicans, but just delete yours if you are not for doing the same thing. Also one time I reported someone who posted a title "Operation Wet Back" about Trump's zero immigration policy at the south border and it was not removed. The next day a mod changed it to *** **** in the title. It was a total troll post but they likes it since they are racists so they left it.
I joined City Data in 2014, and I posted in many different City Data sub-forums. Once I wondered over to the Politics and Other Controversies sub-forum, I quickly realized it's a haven for alt-right, extreme, neo-Nazi people.
Now, I don't ever shy away from good political debates. In fact, I enjoy them very much! However, the City Data moderators make it impossible to have polite discourse because they actively encourage and provide cover for the racist posters, while temporarily—then permanently—banning left-leaning posters. This happens repeatedly. I've seen it over the years. (Yes, I stayed fighting the good fight for way too long... until my own permanent ban, which was a blessing in disguise.)
I discourage everyone from providing this website any traffic, as it's not a good place for anyone without white nationalist views. Stay away! City Data has an absolutely terrible reputation that's completely warranted... and it's only getting worse.
Are there any more poorly-educated, ill-informed, biased and ignorant moderators on the web? Answer me, as viewing the internet for over 20 years, I have yet to see such a level of total incompetence. So please answer the question. Banning people based on IP address is SO old-school, as routers, etc, you little children, can mask literal millions of users. I think a wake-up call of a DNS would awaken those that arbitrate at whim. Answer the question posted.
Not sure if it started as a White supremacist site or they just happen to take over but this place is a cesspool of racist and bigot trolls.
Every conversation is tinged with white supremacy comments bashing non whites, liberals, gays, and foreigners. A truly disgusting site that will make you sick to your stomach
Answer: Ibginnie is by far the worst moderator. Anyone here stating that she is a right-winger is full of it. She meads out her personal justice on a whim. If she doesn't like your post/thread she will make up a reason to can it.
Answer: There is nothing Liberal about City Data don't believe that lie above. That is a right wing white nationalist run site. LOL@ Liberal.
Answer:
Answer: I'll give CD this much - you can find reasonably good information there concerning states and (as the name implies) major US cities. Unfortunately, many CD forums are run by mods who want to be kings or queens of their own little kingdoms to the point that they turn into the very bullies and trolls that they are supposed to be moderating their forums against. There are a few forums there that are actually not bad - the retirement forum, the automobile forum, and a couple of the state forums like the Colorado forum (stay away from the New Mexico forum!). The POC forum drags the entire place down thanks to Ibginnie's erratic and heavily partisan moderation style. I have had my posts deleted because I used ONE foreign word in my post (TOS say you must use English only), or because I used the word "troll" just in passing. Ibginnie couldn't care less if alt-right posters call people libertards or baby killers or commies, etc., etc. Recently, she allowed a thread about Hunter Biden supposedly being a porn addict who preyed on his own cousins, and the thread went downhill from there. And of course, QAnon conspiracy theories have the run of the board. One of the other mods who I am friendly with told me that he hates the way Ibginnie operates and he can't understand why she is allowed to remain. I am seriously thinking of sending a link to sitejabber to the owner of the board, so that he can see for himself how destructive certain mods are to City Data's reputation (such as it is). So, yeah. There's some wheat with the chaff, but the chaff can be overwhelming. Caveat emptor!
Answer: Ugh. City-Data used to be great, but I think those Mods you mentioned have run off everyone else. There used to be a lot more mods, but I have noticed that it's the same awful mods moderating more and more of the site. Poncho is modding my city's forum, for example, which is for an Ohio city. What does a guy in NM know about Ohio?
Answer: It's not an assumption. It's the stark reality of the POC forum at that site.
Answer: They've been around for a long time, perhaps at some point it was a reputable site. That is no longer the case. I suspect traffic to the site is dwindling.
