The last book I ordered appeared in my mailbox in a timely fashion and was exactly as described. Packing was rather minimal, but the book is a hardcover and did not seem to suffer. This was not my first purchase from Better World Books. I have also been very pleased with the books I have ordered in the past - three huge "coffee table" books about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge filled with amazing photography. They cost $3.98 each and also arrived in perfect condition.
The books may not be in the best condition but for used books I am satisfied.
Their customer service is pretty good too.If they send wrong item or not as described, money will be returned without any hassle.
Honestly some of the reviews I am sure are due to the expectations, but I have been using this service for a while now and have never had any issues. The books are used, the descriptors have always been spot on for me, I am getting what I am paying for and most of the time, I am getting a steal. So best advice, read the descriptors on the book conditions and also be aware that pretty much any site will always use media mail for shipping books. It is ALWAYS the slowest shipping method. A-L-W-A-Y-S.
