I have tried it 4 times so far and have always had to call the number to schedule, which usually is 30 minutes for a call back.
There is no excuse for not programming the website correctly. Everytime I get to time to purchase, the ''next'' key is not active and no where does it state what the problem is. If there is a problem with the info on the site, it should tell us...clearly!...what the damn problem is! With the A.I. Revolution, I can't beleive it is this difficult to engineer a decent website! Also, the chat bot could take a less from ChatGTP, it is also worthless!1
I wasn't sure that it could be worse than some airlines. But there it is.
The seats on amtrak are comfortable and roomy and worth the money. But that's where it ends.
They kept the cars so cold that everyone shivered all night. And this is during a countrywide heatwave so you know how cold that has to be.
They ran out of a lot if the food less than halfway through the trip so you couldn't even get a cup of soup, they don't restock and don't give you enough time in DC to even go to the station to get food (they keep warning they will leave you). Why not give a solid half an hour on such a long trip to go to the station.
Last but certainly not least, the train attendant with the last name Penney (don't know her first name) is incredibly rude. I wanted to ask her to move as there was a disruptive child behind me but she wouldn't even talk to me. I was trying to be polite to the crew so I wound up getting permission from the train attendant.
Overall, a bad experience that didn't need to be. I love train rides. This Amtrak ride was terrible but preventably terrible.
Awful experience- definitely wish I had paid a couple hundred more and taken a plane instead. From what I hear this is a common experience
A white shirt employee was beyond rude on the Palmetto 90. He wouldn't assist an older lady with her bag. His response "how heavy is it?" Didn't give her a chance to respond & just walked off.
I was not informed there is no business class cross country travel after I paid for it when they bumped us down. So my son and I are stuck in economy for TWO DAYS! Then I get a call we are being moved. Yet! When I ordered the tickets I checked and it showed business was offered for the travel when I was ONLINE which I selected after I VERIFIED IT WAS OFFERED. Thanks a lot for the deception. I noticed that we have business class now with reduced fare for the last 6 whopping hours of our trip. What's the point. The other 35 hours we have no access to ANYTHING let alone the ability to be comfortable, or eat move about in comfort with my 10 year old now, this was SUPPOSED TO BE A SURPRISE FOR HIM! Your company RUINED HIS VERY FIRST TRIP ON A TRAIN THAT I EAS PERSONALLY EXCITED TO TAKE HIM ON! YOU ALL ARE A BUNCH OF HEARTLESS DECEPTIVE JERKS! Thanks a lot Amtrak. We will NEVER ride a train again. We will take a bus for what you charged at least we can recline to sleep.
We were excited to take a train with amazing views and scenery in June 2023. The ride is about 35 hrs from California to Colorado ( Denver). We purchased tickets late and roommates was the only option. When we walked into the rooms, we immediately noticed black dust everywhere( on a curtains, ventilations, walls). I started to clean everything and wipe everything as I was with my two kids. When train started to move, we felt diesel exhaust in our small rooms. We asked conductor and he basically responded that filters are replaced ( all ok) and that is it. For 35 hrs we felt diesel exhaust which is very dangerous, especially for kids. My husband did some follow ups with conductor but nothing was done to fix it and frankly speaking nothing they could do. My biggest frustration is that Amtrak as a government agency must disclose to passengers before they buy tickets that they (Amtrak) do not prevent diesel into the rooms where people stay and sleep and proposition 65 should be referenced before we purchase tickets. If I knew about it, I would not go by Amtrak. This is a serious fraud in my opinion, they poison people with harmful diesel exhaust for 35 hrs and people do not know about upcoming danger until they board the train. I hope someone will sue them for this behaviour.
On 6/17/23 I went from Northampton to Windsor locks CT. I brought my bike with me for the first time and I asked the staff member (Samuel) to help me get my bike into the nook. He helped me get it in. I also reminded him to let me know when we get close to my stop, he didn't. The train stopped at my stop for a brief minute to let a couple people on and didn't let me know ahead of time. Then he got mad and told me that "it's my responsibility to know where to get off." How can I see through trees?!
On my way back to Northampton the train cars were completely trashed. I asked the staff to help me get my bike into the nook and they told me it's my responsibility to put it in and take it out. Now I have carpal tunnel in my left hand and a left knee that is still recovering from a injury 2 years ago. If all the staff were trained properly there would be much less 1 and 2 star reviews.
Was really excited to take a train ride instead of flying from Seattle to Vancouver. Lined up in Seattle. Got there early. Conductors tell out numbers that nobody know what they mean. People confused. We get onboard and all the seats are taken. No instruction of what to do next. Finally they open up another car. Whole process makes no sense. Disorganised and stressful. Food sub par. Starbucks drip coffee tasted like it was brewed the week before. Once we arrived in Vancouver we sat on the train for another hour with no reason other than they had to take checked bags off. Absolute disgrace of a transit service. Will never travel on Amtrak again.
When the fuel lines on my weedwhacker were destroyed by gasoline I thought I would have to throw the unit away. Being able to get an exact replacement tank I now have operational piece of equipment for many years to come.
My secretary forgot to enter my rewards number to my booked ticket. I have been on hold now for 30 minutes listening to the WORST Muzak from Amtrak along with the worst voices pushing Amtrak's credit cards. It's late and I'm tired and I have to deal with this poor customer service. I also want to add a companion ticket which will no doubt be a smooth process. Hate Amtrak and their DC lounge sucks!
33 hours from Fargo to Seattle… got a roomette due to distance and bought round trip tickets. My disabled son went with me. Roomette is too small to stay in. I was on top bunk and the ceiling was 5 inches from my face. A lot of jerky movement constantly made it tough to sleep on that top bunk anyway. My son fell twice due to being tossed around like a pinball trying to get to the dining car. Could barely walk to and from the bathroom due to the train swaying and jerking so much. Food was really good but not worth the extra $1200 I spent to upgrade from coach. Observation car windows were filthy. Could barely see out of them. Bathrooms were filthy. Attendant enroute home was really nice, but many of the staff were crabby and acted like they didn't want to be there. Can't blame them. We can unfortunately say now that we rode on a train. We could have flown for less money than that roomette. Lesson learned.
I road Amtrak train from Madera California to Salem Oregon. When I changed trains in Martinez California. I was supposed to have a 3 hour layover but turned out to be a 5 hour layover. Then when boarding the train they tried to tell me that my children could not set near me. I was traveling with 2 adults and 5 children 3 of which were autistic. I told them this was unacceptable. The Cody for told me if I did not like this arrangement then I could set in the dinning cart with all my kids. Or just not get on the train. When I got upset he told me I could not board the train and that he would leave me and my children in the middle of nowhere and it was now 1:00 am. I have never in my 53 years ever been treated worse than the treatment I received on this train. I would not recommend anyone take this train. It is not safe. For your children. And I felt like I was going g to have a stroke I was so upset. I had to ride that train until 6 pm the following day in fear for the safety of my family.
OMG worst travel experience of a lifetime. Very third world. Don't dare do it if you are senior. No regard for schedule or compensation for ruining people's dreams for no other reason than failure to communicate. Why would a business ask you to arrive at a certain time fully packed and ready to go at 0400 and when you arrive be told it departed two hours earlier. That ruined a trip planned for years to be at the Alamo for the anniversary. The failed to plan with us. I forgot about Easter and the kind staff at your travel center apparently are all atheists. We would have canceled but we're told it's not possible unless we are willing to loose a great deal of money. I will be running for the Idaho legislature and I promise this will never be forgotten. You can't treat people paying thousands to Amtrak and then treat them like cattle. If we could get a flight in time we would have booked. You can't imagine what a horror it for us to have to endure this horrible situation once again.
Train cancelled & stranded in Chicago with no other train options 3/25. Had to stay an extra night in the hotel and rent a car to drive back 8 hours 3/26. We spent over $600 to get home when our train tickets were $120 total. We could have flown back home with tickets easily under $150 each if we booked when we initially scheduled the trip. We chose to take the train back home to enhance our journey and have a relaxing journey home. This turned into a nightmare when Amtrak cancelled 3 hours before departure, all other train options were booked or cancelled, all flights were either booked or $500 per ticket and no car rentals were available until the next day. The relaxing train journey turned into an extra $600 expense with 8 hours of driving.
Amtrak was not able to provide any assistance during the day the train was cancelled. Tickets were refunded and told to call Monday when Customer Service is open. Called Monday & waited on hold for over an hour. Customer service offered $100 voucher for use within 1 year & directed me to contact corporate via email for a response in 6-8 weeks. Customer rep advised that they do not have a supervisor when asked to speak with someone above them. Rep advised that only method for going forward is contacting corporate.
I no longer feel comfortable traveling with Amtrak in the future now that I know the customer service response. Amtrak will do nothing or will not provide any assistance if you are stranded. They do not care. Would leave a 0/5 stars if possible.
Long story short...My daughter (17) and her best friend were on the train when they have an issue and stop the train for over 2 hours with no correspondence or information. When they decide to get everyone off (as they say the train ahead hit a pedestrian) they tell 2 17 year old girls to get off more than an hour from their destination with no communication on what to do next. My husband and myself are three hours away...9 pm in a snow storm. They were too scared to come back so I had to drive 4 hours away to bring them home. After more than 2 months, so many emails I cant count, countless hours on wait on the phone...we get a voucher back for the cost of the ride home they didnt take. But NOTHING for the ride there, the inconvenience, the fact that we had to pay for an UBER and all sat on needles scared to death. TERRIBLE experience. The worst part is that this HUGE company couldn't take one sec to write back or rectify the situation. I get it, we are meaningless and they will go on making their money with no care on how they treat their customers ESPECIALLY minors! Riders beware...Amtrak stinks!
Absolutely awful. Have been stuck on the train in the middle of nowhere for 4 hours after the train got delayed by 3 before departing. Even tho it's a cheaper option it definitely shows and I don't think I'll ever be taking a train again. Awful customer service with quality and service from 300 years ago.
The conductors are getting worse and worse, plainly rude to customers. I have to use Amtrak foe the last 5 years amd have to tell that it was bad and it gets worse.
The train boarded on time and the car staff and dinner staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. The dinner was great and they offered complimentary bottomless wine because they ran out of baked potatoes. HOWEVER once 9pm hit, that TRAIN WAS FLYING OFF THE TRACKS. Whoever was conducting the train from Sanford Florida to Lorton Virginia on Feb 3,2023 was a dangerous conductor. My entire family did not sleep at all because we thought we were going to die every time the train flew over a bump which was about every 10 minutes. Our hearts were in our stomach as the wind would whistle and we knew we were coming up to the next bump. I was so scared that I put my 3 year old's medical alert bracelet on and slept behind him near the window so in case we flew out I could attempt to protect him. This is no joke. I am a nurse that usually gives people the benefit of the doubt and usually very forgiving but this train ride was extremely unsafe and I will not be traveling on Amtrak in the future.
Started chatting online on their web page. Shaquil seemed to have fallen asleep right after introducing himself. Then called their customer service line to speak with a human being. She wasn't able to answer my simple questions about pricing and kept asking me to hold until I got tired of holding and ended the call. Called back hoping to speak with another agent. The 2nd agent would not even let me finish my sentence and constantly interrupted. Never experienced worse customer service.
Answer: The passengers are the culprits here... not the RR.
