Couldn't be happier with Abe Books! They've become my go-to online bookstore thanks to their awesome client service and super fast delivery.
I especially buy rare editions on their site and titles that I simply cannot find elsewhere. I've never had any problem with their authenticity: everything is real and in great condition.
Look no further if you're looking for a terrific online book store. These guys are fantastic!
Never use this site Do not base anything off of the seller's rating; it is based on how many books they have sold and not customer satisfaction. Read the entire item description or there is a high chance that you will get scammed.
This website mediocre at best. My first book arrived quickly but clearly has something spilt on it which caused water damage thoroughout the first 100 pages. I wouldnt call the "new" condition. The others now say they wont get here till October which is half way through my course so thats totally useless also.
Ordered a new textbook. It arrived in good shape but 16 days after I ordered it. These guys are slow and their response to my complaints was anemic. Wish I'd checked up on them before I placed the order.
I have ordered countless books from Abe and they are always as advertised and it doesn't take long for current releases to end up there. New David Baldacci book only took about 4 months to be available on Abe.
We have ordered books from AbeBooks in the past without any problems. Recently I did order a book that I was charged for but the book never arrived. After working with customer service via email, they refunded my money. I have confidence that, if there are problems with an order, AbeBooks will resolve the situation fairly.
Something needs to be done about this company's fraudulent practices. I've got my bank assisting me now with a charge for a book I did not order. Tried contacting customer service but there is only a recording at the number. All communique is done via email with not too bright people using fictitious names. I will take these people to small claims court if needed and I'm contains BBB.
"Paid extra to have a book shipped priority when I received it, it had been shipped media mail. When I contacted Abe Books about having the difference in my shipping money refunded, they basically said that's your problem and we won't help. That it's the sellers option to ship however they want as long as it gets there in time. Why allow shipping options then? What a rip-off! Have to contact seller and hope he refunds my money. Abe Books has no accountability with their sellers and does not stand up for the customers. Would never use again. Amazon has waaaay better customer service. "
Abebooks pockets 12% of the price of every book that it sells. It has no interest in dealing fairly with customers' grievances but is concerned only with not alienating its manifold milch cows. I've repeatedly asked them to allow customers to review sellers and they have steadfastly ignored my request. (The current system of stars is designed merely to blackmail dealers into advertising only on the ABE site.) Most dealers, it is true, are honest folks trying to earn a living in difficult times, but there are too many who are unfit to sell books and against whom the customer has little redress.
This company appears to have a number of shell book stores it used for its used books. Its also hard to find a review site! They have no google page which truly says volumes as well! We ordered one book through Booked Again books which just links back to Abe. The book was ordered and needed asap. Three days later, I get an email that the seller of the book now wands an additional $20.00 on top of the expedited shipping i paid when i ordered it or they were canceling the order! This is for a poor condition $21.20 book to start with. My daughter needs the book, but i'll be ordering it from someone else for sure. More money is what i'll happily pay rather than be extorted after the fact. This is absolutely one of the worst things i have every seen someone do in business.
Sadly, abebooks has had a decline in service for which originally they blamed Covig. However, they apparently have very little or no staff to oversee issues. Booksellers get orders but are not notified by e-mail as has been the standard for the previous decades. Whether this is because of Amazon's take over or some other problem at the management level, it is a reason this has become a substandard platform.
Quality of book and delivery as promised. Excellent condition less a signature on the inside flap that was identified prior to purchase. Otherwise the jacket is in excellent shape as the book. Delivery timeframe as expected.
In addition, this is by far the best price I found.
I've purchased books online for 25+ years and AbeBooks is the worst. There is no recourse if a seller sends you the wrong book or a damaged book. Either accept it and pay for something you didn't order or take the hit in return shipping. Despite what their return policy says, they won't honor it. Expect stonewalling and ad nauseam rationalizations from their "customer service" bots to deny you your money. Save yourself the grief and find a reputable online book seller. Don't believe me? Google reviews on them. I regret not doing this in the first place.
I bought my book used for $73.00 from Abebooks. It is absolute crap! There are pages missing, a whole chapter missing, highlighting and writing all though out the book! I ended up having to rent the book online because I am unable to use this book. Please do yourself a favor and do not ever buy a book from this company. The fact that they wouldn't inspect each book before they resale says a lot about how they are running their company! In the first picture I posted, the whole chapter is removed... that is the first and last page! $73... really?!
They charge you immediately when you place an order, and then after 3 days, they email you that your order was canceled, but nowhere to find information about the refund for your purchase.
Clearly then have problems managing their store. Don't waste time shopping with them. There are many other bookseller who doesn't trick you.
Terrible customer service, I received only canned answers by bots that didn't address any questions in my emails. Literally, they usually were about stock levels. I didn't ask anything about availability or quanitity! This seems to happen to me with multiple sellers.
I purchased a book that was supposed to be new and it was used and the registration code did not exist. I was offered a credit, then the next day I received an email asking me to purchase the agent an iTunes card and mail it to them for the amount of the credit that was supposed to be issued. Hmm very strange I asked for a refund they can have their used book back with the useless code.
Abebook policy allows sellers to list a delivered price, log the sale, then email for a "shipping price" increase, supposedly for faster delivery. However, my experience was that if the "faster delivery" service is declined, the seller merely cancels the transaction rather than delivering at the agreed price, which included shipping.
Declining to deliver at the agreed terms after an attempt at a price bump is a classic bait and switch sales swindle, illegal in most countries... and Abebooks will not enforce the original terms. I recommend you do not purchase anything via Abebooks.
I ordered a book I need for work about a month ago. Last week, wondering where it is in the delivery process, I checked the tracking information. It had been delivered to the wrong address and was now sitting in a post office 2 1/2 hours away. I contacted them on 2/14 and to date (2/19) the only communication I have had from them is to check my tracking information. Further, I could not locate a customer service telephone number. I am so disgusted. If I could give them zero stars - I would!
Takes too long to get your order. Too much back and forth with book sellers who don't care. No refund. I will not use Abebooks again or recommend this site to anyone. I will tell them to avoid Abehbooks cause the poor, low class, customer service
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
