abebooks.com where they claim "Satisfaction Guaranteed". I ordered a book, only $4.42 where I was sent the incorrect copy. After asking them to correct it the policy is to send it back with tracking number. They want me to spend $3.99 to send it back and then I will have a net refund of 43 cents! As long as you pay for their mistakes then Satisfaction is Guaranteed! I got off with a cheap lesson on how bad abebooks.com is!
I ordered 2 books on Mazda RX-7's for Christmas. The booksellers sent 2 completely incorrect books. I had to pay for the shipping to return the products. Even though this was their mistake. It has taken me a while to get to the post office and of course the day that I managed to get them in the mail I received an email cancelling my return request. This is a nightmare. Don't waste your time with this site.
We are very impressed with the as new condition of the children's golden book we bought as well as the excellent price and it arrived within a reasonable time given that it was shipped to New Zealand. Highly recommend this site.
Abebooks is owned by Amazon, but does not follow the return policies of Amazon. You'll have to pay for return shipping for any damaged books you receive without reimbursement. I recommend using a different business or just using Amazon.
I have been dealing with Abebooks for many years and am happy to say I have had no bad experiences. Although it seems there are more bad reviews than good ones I don't think this is a realistic indication of their business. Abebooks must sell thousands of books through hundreds (if not thousands) of sellers. Those with bad experiences are more likely to write a review than someone who is happy with their purchase. I would recommend that you don't be put off by bad reviews of this Company. Just a drop in the ocean in my opinion.
Sent one book to test their buy back program. They claim the book has water damage and is not worth anything (it didn't). They now have a book that they can sell acquired for free. Not worth your time, go with Amazon or donate your books.
Now, I HAVE got some good books on there. And some sellers are great. BUT! The majority of the sellers are making scams. For example, you buy a book for $10, with $10 shipping. The seller will "lose" the book, and relist it for $200! Then ask for an additional $80 shipping. This shipping with take 2 months, untracked. Tracking is an extra $100. Come on. Ebay can sell books. Amazon too. AbeBooks is owned by Amazon! So why are there so many problems? Customer service always sides with the seller!
This has happened DOZENS of times. I am uploading a recent one on here. Remember, I BOUGHT the book. Then they said it was out of stock. Then they found it the next day and sold it at a higher price!
I have been shocked at the poor reviews I've seen for Abebooks. I've used them for years and never had a problem. I only order from the United Kingdom or the USA & that might be the reason. I live in the UK. I've always get what I've ordered, sometimes quick, sometimes not, but I'm very happy with their service.
I ordered some books from eBay and updated my address. The seller refused to send my books to the correct address. Yet they did not have a issue taking the payment. Funny thing is six days later they just shipped the books but refused to let me provide them with the correct address or cancel the order. I had to reach out to eBay customer service to get it resolved. Sad thing is I will be never order from this company again. No customer service skills & lack of communication they blocked my messages.
I got myself a Vietnamese for beginners book from a shop in Canada that specialises in rare books. The product itself was expensive enough, especially when I had to pay in Australian dollar, but the delivery was also dear. It was worth it though, as they gave me the product I wanted exactly and it was packaged really well, wrapped up in three clear layers when I ripped open the parcel. Inside was the box, which included the book and the complimentary three audio CD's. I wasn't impressed with the fact that they didn't send the parcel with a tracking number, and the price was dear, but I got what I wanted in the end and it was worth the gamble overall. Not for online shoppers who are faint-hearted though. Shop with these guys at your own risk!
I guess I have to give at least one star. I was a 5star rated seller on Abebooks for 20 years, but I had a book that was very small and was able to ship as a 'letter' and apparently the USPS doesn't scan those so they accused me of entering an incorrect tracking number. As far as I know the customer got the book, there was no claim. But you can no longer buy my excellent inventory of books and I can't sell them to you.
Purchased two books. (one for close to $100.00) Never received the books. Was given fraudulent tracking numbers. Had to cancel my credit card due to fear that they would tamper with it. They lied from start to finish. Never got the books. Never got a refund. I had to pursue a refund via Visa debit fraud department. Stay clear of these very dishonest fraudsters.
The sellers do not bother to check the texts they're selling. I received an "advanced copy" of a book (i. E. a manuscript an authors sends out to editors before final publishing) instead of the final product. Don't bother with expedited shipping, as they'll profit the extra cash and send it through standard mail.
I ordered a 15 book box set of Beverly Cleary's work for $75 and I received one used, paperback book. I went around and around with their customer service about a partial refund, or receiving the rest of my order, and the matter was never resolved. Beware of this seller - they are super scammy.
Purchased a book for school and waited for it while tracking the delivery. The book was ahead of schedule but later than the original tracking date since it kept getting stuck at each stop. The day of delivery it stated that it was delivered however just not to my address. I have checked with neighbors and the post office. The post office said only the shipper could inquire. However abebooks said since it says it was delivered then there is nothing further they would do. Don't buy from them!
I ordered a book in August- it is now October and I still have not received the book nor the refund of $129.46. I have written to "Irish Booksellers" with responses from "asking me to give it more time" to now- no response at all. I regret that I did not look at the reviews for this company before I placed my order- a mistake I will never make again due to this encounter with a dishonest -most probably-fake company.
Great place to get used or out of print books, so far I have encountered good merchants who ship your orders fast(er) than those selling through the big 'Ama' site. Most sell their books for less than what it costs to ship it to you. I recently ordered 4 books from different merchants all at the same time, Abebooks did the order, allocating the parts of the order to the corresponding merchant. I did not have to place 4 separate orders.
I am generally pleased with many other sellers of used books I purchase on line. I should have checked AbeBooks ratings before I order. The description said "very good". The outside spine was torn and the hard cover was very marred and scratched. Look elsewhere.
For some reason this site gets a lot of bad reviews, most of which I read after I placed my 5 orders. I was nervous but all 5 books arrived just as they said they would, all for a very reasonable price. The books from US vendors came right away, but the ones from London took longer, just because of the distance. I would use them again in a New York minute!
I was really suspicious before actually ordering from AbeBooks. The prices seemed too good to be true, and the site had so many bad reviews.
Yet I decided to go for it, and my order was delivered to me in about a week. The book was in excellent condition.
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
