Was excited that I could find an out of print book. Seller disclosed it as having traces of use. That was fine. Traces of use to me are, scuffing, dented corners, ruffled pages, maybe the spine is very flexible. This had a 2 inch tear on the back of the spine separating the binding from the book. No refund was offered. Not using this Scammer book store again. Most used book sellers will either refund or partially refund you. Would not trust any sellers within this website.
I cautiously tried AbeBooks for the first time this past fall. WOW! I was so impressed. Of the 5 books I ordered (at great prices) all but one looked brand new. I have since ordered books from time to time and continued to be impressed with the quality and affordability. Abe Books has allowed me to purchase books that normally would just remain on my wish list. I am so thankful for their selection and prices.
For what it's worth the subjects of my orders have included science, history, art, culinary, literary and just plain fun.
Bought a textbook for $200 dollars from them as I was not able to find it anywhere else. A day later I receive an email saying I am being refunded as the order was accepted by an error. Class starting soon, lost a day. Said I was going to be refunded within 48 hours. 5 business days later no refund. Why would you accept an order for a book that you don't have. You really don't need to be that smart to check your inventory. Hope I get a refund. Stay away from these clowns.
I just bought 7 books for about $33.00 (and a few other in the past). Five books were about $3.60 and 2 were about $7.60 all with free shipping. They were given good to like new condition ratings. 3 hard cover books appear to have never been opened, 1 library book was well read but the pages were pristine and the binding still good. The paperbacks either were new or in good shape. They all arrived within a week or less though the booksellers were within the next state. I am ecstatic. My only problem is which do I read first! I wish they took Discover or PayPal.
UPDATE: Changed rating from two to one star after receiving book from Basement Books- sub under Abebooks. Believe book was rated very good. Received book: binding on front and rear had been cut and now glued - this was not disclosed in the rating before purchase. Abebooks once had a good rating - not any more. DO NOT BUY. Apparently ABebooks no longer stocks books. They contract with small companies that deliver crappy books by Pony Express. Ordered May 10, today is May 17. Hope it will come this month. Do not recommend/will not buy again.
I've paid and haven't received my books. The books supposedly shipped more than a month ago (Dec. 29). Today is Feb. 1. Every e-mail is returned with the same pre-prepared response explaining the tracking system. There is no phone contact option. My advice to everyone is not to buy from abebooks. Joel
I recently purchased a rare book through abebooks.com. The book was shipped from the UK and arrived looking pretty good, but upon further inspection was missing many plates. Abebooks made sure I was reimbursed for the $ 85.00 return shipping, original Charles including shipping, and paid for priority shipping on a replacement order. They also gave me a 15% discount on that order. They were courteous, prompt and very helpful in solving the problem. I highly recommend them.
I have used ABE for about ten years. There are a considerable number of corporate sellers on the site, but that's true, unfortunately, of all sites these days. I try to stick with small business sellers. Keeping communication open is a good idea, which is true with any book seller.
I enjoy shopping on ABEBooks. I recommend it.
I guess I should have looked at this site prior to ordering. Choose a seller (Hippo Books in Toledo) that was nearby and upgraded shipping. Three weeks later, still no book. The Toledo store can't even understand that I have asked for a refund (all of $6) and are determined to still send it. Whatever.
Purchased item by mistake, abebooks need 24 hours to respond to help, order has been processed. So now I have contacted the seller to try and work out a cancelation and purchase of correct item. Just avoid abebooks. Can't give zero.
There is apparently a good reason their books are cheaper! Their service and shipping is the pits! Do not buy books from here unless you would like to wait a month on them. I ordered my books and they indicated the shipping label was created the next day... Two weeks later still saying the shipping label had been created. Contacted customer service to no avail. Thought I was getting a good deal... But I need the book since my class started last week. Buyer be ware.
This site is a joke. I ordered a book from one of the seller's and he said it would take a little extra time to get the book and send it. He asked me for additional shipping charges, which I paid. I ended up paying over $200 for this book. I've tried multiple times to contact the seller with no success. I've reached out to the site support, and they told me that, since it's been over a month since the expected delivery date, I'm not entitled to any sort of refund. This is absurd, considering the seller told me that the original delivery date was being extended. I have to take some blame, as I was naive when sending extra money for shipping. Regardless of that, however, I still would've been out at least $175. I've never dealt with people as non responsive or unhelpful. I'll never get my money back. But I hope that, by at least leaving a review, others will take it as a warning. DO NOT use this site. It is purely a scam.
This is a fantastic site to find any book you are looking for. I've found older books that are hard to find ANYWHERE! Some of the books i have found overseas in UK, or other countries. They have history, novels, textbooks, anything you can think of to read, which is really great for me because i am an avid reader. I would recommend this site to everyone who can't find a particular book they have been searching for. Their prices are very reasonable, and when I didn't receive a book on time, the book store selling the item always went out of their way to send a replacement. They handle the customers very well.
Sellers can be very scummy with their book descriptions on AbeBooks, and there is no way to leave a seller review to warn other buyers of their issues.
I've received many damaged books, not matching their descriptions at all, from AbeBooks sellers and there is no way to leave a review about them. It's extremely frustrating spending hundreds of dollars on a book, only to receive them in a poor condition, horribly damaged, pages cut or torn, and the sellers don't care at all.
Their return process is extremely annoying, and there's nothing you can do about it.
AbeBooks is a last resort option for me when purchasing books.
Ordered a book from AbeBooks / Irish Booksellers in Portland, ME with delivery to Norway. The book condition was classified as new. When the order arrived, the "new" book was water damaged/moldy and packed in bubble wrap (can only guess why). The book had to be discarded. Contacted Abebooks regarding a refund and explained the situation/sent pictures of the damaged book. Weeks later I get an email that the cancellation/refund request has been cancelled. Stay away from AbeBooks.
Well, I ordered a book I need for class on 9/6. The shipping was 3 - 6 business days. 9/16 came and went (6 business days). It is now 9/22 and still no freaking book. Meanwhile I'm in class for two weeks with homework assigned and no book. This is the worst, absolute worst website to buy books from. I've never had a problem anywhere else. www.abebooks.com is terrible and I do not recommend them if you want your book.
My first order was cancelled because the seller didn't ship the book in the timeframe given. Okay, fine, things happen. I decided to give them another chance because of their low prices, and ordered the same book from a different seller. Not the next day, not even two days, FOUR days later my order was cancelled again due to the seller listing the book 'in error', whatever that means.
These issues have lost AbeBooks my business, which is a shame cause I buy a lot of both used & new books. I'll stick with Amazon and pay a little more cause I know without a doubt that I'll actually get what I order.
After receiving several notices that they would not allow me to return
The book, I received an email from the book seller stating I could cut
The pages apart and then read them but to be sure to use a sharp knife. I
Did not think this was a very good idea. I then received another email
Stating they had reviewed the issues and decided (while they did not
Need to) they were going to allow me to return it. They paid for
Shipping. While it took some time it did get done. So for those people
That read my first review, I am glad to report they did step up to do
The right thing. I will consider ordering again. What I have
Leaned is this: 1) Be very care about reading the description of the
Book. If it says it's never been read and was published in 1908 (maybe
It didn't spend all it's time in a library) 2) When you decide to
Return the book be sure you select the right reason. Some reasons are
Tagged as no refund and you will be out, unless you are blessed like I
Was.
Just don't use them. Their supplier gave me a delivery date of 2-4 working days. It's now over a week and nothing... expect cut and paste apologies and eventually a refund. If I had wanted the money, I would haven't ordered the book in the first place.
Complete waste of time
Please don't purchase anything from here. I bought a book they send fake whatever was in description nothing matches. When I called the number they provided, picked by a man don't anything he said I have no idea you can return the book that's it. I was like really! And I spent $100 so disappointed. For return it's says go through Amazon but how it's not sell by Amazon please be careful
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
