I live in Australia.
Ordered a book from Ogma books through Abe books.
Ogma Books are in the UK.
The book was for delivery to a friend in the UK.
Price for the book and UK postage was paid for.
Couple of days later Abe said seller wanted more than five times the UK postage.
I queried the extra charge and was then told the book was no longer available.
At no time did I have direct contact with the book seller.
All done by email through Abe books!
NEVER NEVER EVER AGAIN!
STAY WELL AWAY PEOPLE!
THIS ONLINE BOOK COMPANY SUCKS! BUYER BEWARE - DO NOT USE THEM!
I ordered a textbook that was listed as a 2 book set. Priced for $20 cheaper than the Amazon listing for same book set. After waiting for over 2 weeks, I only received one book. Spoke to customer service about "Extremely reliable" bookseller. The missing book was suddenly out of stock... I requested to return for full refund, and was told I would have to pay the return cost. I paid the $3.19 to return book and have still not received my refund. It's been 29 day since then. I re-contacted the Abe book company about my refund. All the can tell me is that a refund has been requested.
I ended up buying the set off of the Amazon website and received both books in 3 days. I looked and looked for a review section on the Abe books website. It makes since that they do not have one, because they suck! I do not like dealing with company's that have piss poor customer service. I will continue to bash this company on any and every website that allows me too.
I ordered two textbooks one month ago. For the first book I ordered, I have not been given any tracking number and even though I have asked the company repeatedly to give me one, I haven't received any answer. Furthermore I have contacted the abebooks customer service to address this irresponsibility from the seller and I haven't received A SINGLE ANSWER IN A WEEK.
The second book I bought is from an Indian company which ostensibly had a maximal rating. The book was supposed to be over 800 pages, A4 format and over 1 kg. Although I paid extra charges for the 1 kg, not only was the book less than 1 kg, it was also a printed pdf with a paperback attached to it with a A5 format. Fair enough, at least it does the job you must say; well no, because the characters are so small, the book cannot be read.
At this point you must be saying that there may be some shady vendors out there. However abebooks does not do what it is supposed to do- regulate the relationship between buyer and seller. Instead it chooses to let customers resolve their own problems, and often without success.
I have tried numerous times to purchase a book from AbeBooks that I have been seeking for years and they have listed. I make the purchase, contact my CC company to authorize the transaction and each and EVERY time AbeBooks has changed the price of the book between the time I place the order and billing my CC thus my order gets kicked out. I don't believe the book actually exists at this point. I believe with every fiber of my being that AbeBooks is a scam site that is phishing for CC numbers to steal from.
Abe books has got to be the worst company I have ever dealt with. I order tons of books and decided to try out this company. Big mistake. I ordered 2 of the same book (one for me and one for my MIL). The books came from the same seller in TX. It took 2 weeks for one book to arrive. No tracking information is ever given so it's just a surprise when it shows up.
After a month, the 2nd book never showed so I contacted the seller. Seller never answered back. So I initiated a refund. The seller then sends me tracking info for the first book I already received. Another email and I finally got tracking info. Says it was delivered to my home. It was not, so I emailed again and they told me to ask my roommates (who are my children) or check my garage (which is always closed and locked). I contacted the USPS and they said it is out of their hands.
I asked Abe Books to do the right thing and issue and refund (the book was less than $10). They have refused to help in any way and told me I am basically lying and in fact, do have the book in my possession. Why would I lie about a $10 book?
They won't help further and my emails go unanswered by Abe Books. I am out my money and help. Never use this site for anything. They take your money and run.
Sent wrong book. Had issue with refunding my money. Can't call them. No one seems to speak English very well as evident in their e-mail correspondence.
BS policy. No help from customer service.
Getting the credit card company invovled because they dont deserve to keep money for not delivering any goods.
Ordered 9th edition of book
Recd 7th edition
Delivery took twice as long
Seller not willing to rectify mistake in any reasonable manner
Said-
"I just pulled it from the shelf and sent it without checking"
"The right book must have been somewhere"
"i am swamped with other orders and can't bother to rectify the mistake"
Abe books did not do anything about it. - just forwarded the emails to the seller.
THEN REALIZED THERE IS NO PLACE TO LEAVE FEEDBACK.
THERE SELLER RATING IS BASED ON THEIR OWN MADE UP STUFF
BOTTOM LINE
NEVER ORDER FROM ABE BOOKS
BIG SCAM!
COMPLETELY UNRELIABLE!
Run for your life from this website... ha! I've never seen this kind of fraud website in my life. I've ordered for my nursing school textbook from this website since August 22,2017 and today is Sept 14,2017, almost one month and i've not receive my textbook and MY EXAM is next WEEK. Some people said only buyers from outside USA are the only one having problems with ABEBOOKs are liars because I live in US. I even called the DHL two days ago to confirm the tracking number they gave me, but they said they don't have my book yet.
If had known, i would have read reviews before purchasing. If you have opportunity to read all the reviews in the website and you still purchase from them, then you're on your own. People who seems to write good review for them are from the workers i think. The only thing i still wish to do, is to make a video and share both on google and everywhere i can, to tell people about this fraud website. I wish not to give any star but the site won't let me... VERY POOR SELLER!
Do not use this book dealer A to Z Books and Book Vista same book sellers, New Delhi India through Abe Books. Ordered a Book never arrive at all since April 2017 and now is July 2017. Book seller is not telling the truth said India does not have tracking system. I checked they do have tracking system. I am afraid to use Abe Books again eventhough they have guven me a refund but lose miney due to exchange rate. Biblio books also using that same book seller un India andave used them and assigned the same book seller and agaun book never arrive because they never send in the first place.
I've ordered a serie of three books impossible to find anywhere. It was really expensive ($400) and I only received them months later (it was supposed to be two months, it was almost four and the sender said they didn't put a tracking number because it was too expensive!)
I received two of the books I wanted. The third one was missing and instead I got other books! From the same author and being PART of the third volume but two were missing. I've got $400 stolen from me since the whole point was to have a collection of three volume representing the life's work of the poet.
I wrote them absolutely furious, they said they could send me the third volume when they would have it ("some day", WTH!) or that they could refund me but I had to put a tracking on the books! I had to find a company to send the books internationally and I didn't want to deal with them and lose more time. They then wrote me saying the return/refund got cancelled because it took me too long, WTF! So I got sold the wrong books, I paid for them and I'm stuck with them because I didn't send the books back fast enough (hello, I had to wait 4 month and you can give me one?)
Do NOT use this company, they probably are lying about the book you are looking for. They are unbelievable in a very bad way. I still can't believe how screwed I am!
ABEBOOKS Has Been Much More Than Just "Alright".
I have ordered some 20 or 25 books or cassette programs over about 6 years.
Not only have I ALWAYS gotten the correct book or cassette program,
But it has Always been in the "good" condition that was posted.
(In the "preowned books", usually there's been only 1 or 2 lines of writing in the whole book. I always order "in GOOD" or "in very good" condition--not "fair".)
To this date, there has always been speed of arrival, as the prompts will tell you how soon to expect it. When I order 3 books at a time, obviously, they might arrive at different days, due to different vendors.
So, until I have any different outcomes, I feel this site has been a blessing. (And I am NOT affliated w/any ABEBOOKS personnel in any way.)
Addendum: 2015, I got a book incorrectly gauged as "Large Print", but (Abebooks and) the vendor wonderfully responded when I contacted them about the error.

This place is absolutely terrible. I used to get books here but now every book is canceled not worth waiting weeks to find out you'll never get the book
I am a college student and the book was taking WAY to long to arrive. I needed to buy the book from my college's book store. Then they told me that they couldn't take it back. I'm a college student. Do they think that I have money that I can throw around. WILL NEVER BUY BOOKS HERE AGAIN.
I purchased from a seller - LE PIANO-LIVRE - and the book I received had a foul odor, writing on one of the pages, and was slightly warped, though none of this was mentioned in the description - the book was listed by the seller as being in "very good condition". When I went to leave feedback about the seller, I discovered that AbeBooks does not allow feedback for their sellers, as I learned from Shane Chapman of Customer Support. He then offered me a 10% "discount" on my next purchase, adding that perhaps the next bookseller I buy from might not be as dishonest as the previous one. Needless to say, I won't be buying from any more sellers on AbeBooks. The lack of a feedback system is why I was fooled into buying from a bookseller I otherwise might have avoided - but this is something that AbeBooks' Customer Support seems intent on ignoring. Avoid AbeBooks, unless you like your book-buying experience to be a crapshoot.
I've used Abebooks for several years and in the past have been satisfied with most of the transactions. Now however, Abebooks has a policy of allowing Sellers to disguise their location - for example, a seller may represent they are based in a United States city but in reality are an overseas company AND shipping FROM overseas to the United States. Abebooks allows a loophole for an overseas Seller to do this as long as they indicate somewhere in their listing that they "MAY" ship from some other location - even without full disclosure. This enables Sellers' deception of point of origin of your package. This directly impacts shipping time, increases the risk of damage and increases your financial privacy risks of dealing with a disguised, overseas Seller. I first contacted Abebooks about this policy, they determined the Seller "met their requirements" and took no action other than to tell me I could request a refund. I am very disappointed Abebooks is enabling this kind of Seller deception and encourage you to think twice before using this service.
I parrot the recent reviews of AbeBooks and as many have shared wish I had read the reviews before "attempting" to order. I payed for an "expedited" order which on the website said would be 3-5 business days. Which mean the book should arrive by Christmas Eve. I got the email confirming the order with an estimated delivery of January 4! I contacted customer service and was told I could "pay" extra to have the order expedited. Duh! When I responded that I had already done that a response came a day later saying there would be no way to get the book by Christmas Eve but I would get it by Dec. 30. So given it was a hard book to find I agreed. No wait for it! 2days later I get an email that the book I ordered was "misplaced or sold without record" and I could get another one if I paid an extra $40"! You can't make this up. So how did a book go "misplaced or sold" when you sent me a confirmation and had exchanged emails about the book for almost 5 days? I rejected the offer and cancelled the order and turned around and ordered the book from amazon for almost $100 less. Yes, I won't get it by Christmas but dealing with AbeBooks was ridiculous.
Ordered book but the seller canceled evidently when saw could get more for book and I refused to pay substantially more for book than what they listed book for Abes backed up this dishonesty
I have ordered from Abe Books previously but I will not be ordering from them again.
For the past two semesters, my daughter ordered books from Abe Books that were water-damaged. This was clearly stated in the book seller's statement so we knew what we were getting.
After the semesters ended, we got a price from Abe Books for a buy back and shipped the books to them. When Abe Books received the books, however, they said the books were water-damaged and would not buy them back. BUT IT WAS OK FOR THEM TO SELL US THESE BOOKS IN THE FIRST PLACE, RIGHT?
When I complained Abe Books said it was their policy not to buy back water-damaged books. But why can they sell them in the first place? Anyway, when I asked to have the books sent back to me they stated that I had to pay return postage.
So now Abe Books has my water-damaged books which they will turn around and RE-SELL to another consumer. BUYER BEWARE!
I WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH ABE BOOKS AGAIN!
I ordered a book on Jan. 8th paid an extra $6.99 to get it delivered in 4 days. I may not be a math wiz but it is well past 4 days. Ironically it is a stats book.
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
