I was on SiteJabber to review a site I am disgusted with, and ran into AbeBook reviews. I was shocked at the number of one star reviews. I have used AbeBooks for several years now and have ordered dozen and dozens of books. I shop several sites before going to AbeBooks so I know what the current prices are, and almost always end up purchasing from AbeBooks if a used book will fit the bill. I mostly order children's books (I'm a teacher) and I have never been disappointed. The condition has been true to the description. Sometimes I get library bound books and that is a bonus. The vast majority of books are less than four dollars with free shipping, when other online sites have new copies for ten to 16 dollars with additional shipping- I can't beat the price. I know the satisfaction with the sale depends on the actual seller, but I haven't come across a bad one yet. I have also purchased paperback books for myself for pleasure reading- fiction, memoir, humor, scifi, and all have been fine. It seems a lot of the bad reviews are for textbooks and books needed in very quick time, so maybe that is part of the issue. I recommend you give AbeBooks sellers a try if you wish to save big dollars on book purchases- it's worth trying them once on an inexpensive book just for the savings, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I hate to think bad reviews might have stopped me from finding such a great source for the many books I need. AbeBooks is a go-to for me.
I have been going back and forth with them for over a week. I ordered a book, everything looked like it went through, then 15 mins later the transaction was cancelled, so I tried again with another seller, 15 minutes later it was cancelled again, so I figured third time the charm again, they cancelled them. I checked the bank card, no problem, the amount never went through. But the card was good I use all the time without a hiccup. So emailed my disgust to customer services, and they apologized said the seller did it, but the email said they did. So they gave be a $15 discount code, so I tried today. Couldn't put the code in anywhere. So I emailed them saying what the heck is going on, so I get this email that says they put in and I should my discount (which now has become 2.20 (what?). So I logged on and there is nothing, no discount no nothing, just what I owe as before. So I give up. This is totally rip off and waste of time. I few years ago, bought a book, because the price was good, but it was torn and sent in cheap packaging. Ive' learn my lesson, I WILL NOT BUY FROM THEM, alibris is much better... Shop at your own risk.
Can some on give me some advice?, Should I?, Do I have to go through Paypal to get paid? Do books even sell on abebooks?. Or is there another site I can use where I'll be happy to sell my book?
When I bought a book for 5 dollar, I was charged 45 dollars for delivery costs. I think that Abebooks must show the real prise, because if they did I would have bought the book elsewhere.
Abe Books is terrible, the horrible seller took weeks to send out my book and then gave me a bogus email.
DO NOT BUY FROM ABE BOOKS!
NO ONE SHOULD EVER EVER BUY FROM ABE BOOKS, THE SELLERS ARE BOGUS, LAZY AND DISHONEST
It was easy first time to place an order, the price for the second hand book was very cheap and the postage reasonable, even if the wait was quite long
This is not a real business! Do not use them! They use random sellers and do not stand by their sellers. You are better off lighting your money on fire.
I sent them two books the only sent a check for one. I put both of them in the same box and they are claiming I never shipped the book and have yet to get back to me.
I received a request to pay more for delivery, which I did. Still, the book never arrived and they refuse to refund because it's been more than 30 days after the expected delivery date. STAY AWAY!
Description of the book was a New, but they sent me a used one!
I have been charged for a full new book price, and I asked a refund, but they never responded. What kind of customer service is that?
I've been dealing with abe.com for a number of years and it has been a good source for out-of-print books. I recently purchased a book as a gift for a friend from BOOK DEALS. The book turned out to be a smaller format book than I thought I had ordered (no dimensions were given in the listing) and I returned it for a refund. BOOK DEALS has been stonewalling me on the refund, so I stopped payment through my bank. This should not have been necessary, but BOOK DEALS is run by a crook. DO NOT BELIEVE THE FIVE-STAR RATING GIVEN THIS BOOKSELLER! ABE.COM REVIEWS AREN'T BASED ON BUYER FEEDBACK!
I ordered a book a month and a half ago. I never received it. I have e-mailed Abe books several times and have yet to get a response. I've accepted the fact that I'm just out of my money and a book
I purchased three books from this site. Two of the books I purchased ended up being the wrong books needed for my two courses. My professors changed the textbooks needed for each class. I attempted to return the books and get my refund from them, and both of the sellers denied my refund. Mind you this was well within my 30 day limit to get a refund. Apparently AbeBooks gives their independent sellers the right to deny someone's refund if they happen to purchase the wrong book. I am now screwed over because I spent over $200 on books and none of the original (TRUSTED) websites are even buying this book back right now.
I even contacted Abe's customer service and they basically said "sorry, you aren't getting a refund because the seller chose to not give you your money back." I am in my last semester of college and I have never had any issues with books, but this was my first AND LAST time ever using AbeBooks. Please spend your money with Bookbyte or Chegg, at least they have actual return policies and won't screw you over. Do not waste your time with this sorry, unethical excuse of a "business."
What used to be a decent company to go through has become so sketchy I've stopped spending money through their site. I find the sellers on any other marketplace that will protect my purchase. In the last several months, I've placed several orders. The ones I've had issues with started to bring to light some unsavory new policies. In one instance, I received a book with water damage. Pictures were sent to the seller with a request for a return shipping label. The seller did not respond. I emailed Abebooks and they said they would contact the seller and, in the meantime, they initiated a return for me. What you have to read the fine print for is that they will not guarantee you reimbursement of the return shipping costs. Bottom line is I will be out money for a book that was not in the advertised condition. Hm. That's not quite right. They used to reimburse return shipping. Not anymore. In another instance, I was shipped three copies of an illegally produced book direct from India. I pointed this out to Abebooks, but they responded that they have to have pictures of the books. The books LOOK identical to the original with the exception that 40 or so pages were UPSIDE DOWN. I emailed them back and they said they couldn't see how this made the book a fraudulent copy and refused a return. Hm. Yeah. Now I won't work with them anymore, which will cost them about $150,000 in sales a year. Whoops.
I received a code from them that I never got to use and I contact them and they've been giving me excuses after excuse. I suggest to try another place that does better business than this place.
I ordered books from AbeBooks recently and I received them in good time. Previous orders have also been received with no issues. I would buy from AbeBooks again.
Ordered a book.
Rec'd confirmantion of payment.
They do ok taking my money!
REC'D A SHIPMENT UPDATE:
Your book has been shipped.
Wait a week, no book, or movement of the "shipped book".
And NO ANSWER FROM ABE OR OWL BOOKS OF OHIO.
I'LL KNOW BETTER NEXT TIME.
THRIFTBOOKS, here i come.
If you type in an ISBN trying to find your book you will find it but once you add that book to your cart another edition of that book will be in there instead. This place sucks
I thought I was buying my class text book from Abe Books. I was unaware that I was on their site buying from a 3rd party. When I received my book, it was not the book I ordered. I contacted Abe Books who them put me in contact with the seller. The seller stated you received the international version of the book and all the content is the same. Why?! I ordered this book because this is the book the professor assigned to this class. I can't say professor, please hold while I find similar contact within this book I received, because the pages you assigned don't match the pages in the book, and the content you are going over is not the exact same content that's in this book. On top of all this, I have to pay to ship back a book that I never requested. How is it possible that they can ship a similar boom and not the book I ordered, especially when my order has the ISBN I requested and doesn't match the book I received. This has been the worst experience ever and I always order my text books online. The book doesn't even look new. I'll never use this service again.
I was frustrated at first because my book was delivered to the wrong place however the company that sold the book made it right and finally delivered the book.
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
