"Select Pewter Maple" or Pewter Maple is a soft "red" maple manufactured in Canada by Lumber Liquidators under their brand name Casa de Colour - nothing is being liquidated here except your wallet. Turns out it is about as soft as pine on the Janka scale and easily scratches and dents - it is not American hardwood maple and no contractors here have heard of it. In case you bought or buy from Lumber Liquidators, make sure you receive all your invoice pages (there should be at least 3 including their terms and conditions), and know that if you try to return their poor quality wood, they will start an "exchange" game followed by a "beat the clock" game, followed by "good cop bad cop", where apparently the local store can ignore corporate "customer care" and refuse to accept your return... on the 91st day. Much more went on, keep detailed notes and contact your major credit card company within 60 days (may differ, give them a call) to start a claim - maybe you'll avoid being stuck with 30 boxes of "hardwood", although we were lucky enough to have caught the problems before having all of it permanently installed. You've probably heard about the class action lawsuit currently against Lumber Liquidators for their toxic Chinese laminate with the dangerous formaldehyde levels people unknowingly installed in their homes. Best to avoid them and their so-called "sale" prices, because you won't be getting the "sale" or American quality you thought you were buying.
