I travel a lot, and have used hotels.com a lot of the years. Not always to book the room, but for research - it provides a lot of information in a conveniently organized way. But I have booked through it a number of times, and have never had any issues.

Make sure you sign up for their emails, as they run sales about half the time, many of them just for people who are on their email list.
Shipping seems slow for those of us used to amazon.

I have used this site multiple times over the past five years, with very good results as long as I have ony booked hotels that are 3 stars or above - there is an enormous decrease in quality beteween a 3 star and a 2.5 star. Also be warned that although they tell you the general location before you book, those locations tend to be very large, and the likelihood is that the hotel will be in the less attractive part of the area - after all, that is why they need to use this service to full their rooms. But if you are willing to accept this limitation, the rates are generally much lower than the ones that I have found on comparable sites. Also a hint - if you are booking somewhere (like London) where there are a lot of hotels, you can often figure out which one is listed on hotwire by comparing the features to those listed on hotels.com, since the two sites use the same categories for features.

I have ordered multiple times from this site, never a problem. Be aware that they almost always have a coupon code that can be used for either a discount or free shipping - if you sign up for emails they will send the codes to you. They also give you a 10 or 15% discount for signing up, but unless you are really wild about a particular item, wait for them to run a special discount code sale, as the special sales always seem to be 20 or 25%.

I have ordered shoes on this site multiple times. Some I kept, some I returned. Never a problem, and the refund posts promptly to my account.

My booking in Russia seemed to go well -I was able to reserve at the hotel I had researched and wanted at a great price. Luckily, I double checked with the hotel before going - because the hotel reservation I had paid for in full was actually NOT the one that getaroom.com had confirmed - they told me they had a computer glitch and so they had booked me at a DIFFERENT HOTEL. One that I would not have picked, as it was not as nice and not in as good a location. And if I had not checked, I would have arrived at the hotel I thought I had booked with my booking confirmation in hand, and they would have turned me away. The saga goes on and on after this, but the bottom line is that I would recommend being very wary about using this company to book a room.
