“Best Collaborative Site for Mapping”

Adrián J.
4/30/23

OpenGeofiction is an excellent site for mapping online. It's very convenient—you can map using the built-in editor (iD) or connect a third-party software, JOSM, which has many powerful tools. The site is very collaboration-based, especially in special areas called 'blue territories' which is where anyone can edit. Of course, there are some areas which are owned privately; not everyone wants to work with someone all the time. Such territories have some 'qualifications' you'd need to get one to prove that you are responsible and capable. This includes mapping for a certain amount of days, being realistic, being creative, and being collaborative. ALL of the people who have reviewed before me gave 1 or 2 stars because of 'rude' admins who are 'bullies' were people who could not follow simple rules. 'Rhett M.' kept adding motorways to a blue (free-to-edit) state, which goes against the site's collaborative spirit. He had faced countless warnings and temporary blocks before being banned. 'Tim H.' needs to understand that admins can't just hand any territory to them for no reason, instead, you have to work your way up as your mapping improves. 'david g.', going through a trial to see if you deserve a territory is logical because otherwise we would have a bunch of poorly-mapped territories across all of OGF. And finally, 'Kyle W.' should try to not name cities after themselves (is it really such a big deal?) and just stop spamming articles. The site isn't 'stuffy', it just has a logical set of rules which are very easy to follow if you just stop and try to understand. There are many other alternatives out there which are basically unmoderated so you can enjoy mapping a large territory there if you want—but, if you want to be part of our collaborative site, you have to simply follow some rules. This is how many people in OGF flourish, because they follow and don't cause trouble or ignore warnings.

“Why the admin is bad”

Rhett M.

The admin is a bully and this site must be terminated in order for the success of the workers' union and the world is against bullies and evil. They are bullying me and other people for fun because I believe they think it is "funny". I also say that it is against the rules to bully. I am Rhett McDonald, submitting this review because it is really accurate.

I am a member of opengeofition and this site is TERRIBLE the site tells you off for dumb reasons once i got told off for naming a city "K. W City" and they have have a wiki and it is worse you get told off for apparently for 'Overwikifition" and if you have a multiple articles with very little text it counts as 'Overwikifition"

I strongly advise of you to stay away from this site

When I joined, I didn't know that you had to work in "blue" territories. They blocked me. I worked in a blue territory for a while (about two or three weeks after my block was lifted) and I asked for a territory. They said no because my place was not "correctly" sized. They should judge based on how hard you worked and not how it looks. They should also let you do more free mapping. I told them about this site and what the people here said, and they e-mailed me that they didn't care. What the heck?!?

I tried to use Geofiction and just thought it was an open sandbox. The site itself has some pretty cool features and is really one of a kind. However, The community is super picky, stuffy, and they DO NOT allow just anyone to edit anywhere and you cannot save your maps locally. They are incredibly protective of their site and only allow you to REQUEST to get a piece of the map after you do a 7 trail run, and then at that point, you may be rejected even still depending on if they like your map... Like honestly... Why can't we have a site like this without the stupid stuffy attitude?

When you first join the site, please pay attention to the rules. You can avoid a lot of trouble (unlike the previous reviewers) if you take 5 minutes to just go over them.
