The overall reputation of the company reflects significant dissatisfaction among customers, particularly regarding its customer service and reliability. Many users report frustrating experiences with delayed refunds, poor communication, and unhelpful support staff. Complaints about properties not matching descriptions or being in unacceptable conditions are prevalent, leading to a loss of trust. While a few customers express occasional satisfaction with specific transactions, the overwhelming sentiment leans towards a lack of accountability and professionalism. This has resulted in a growing number of users opting for alternative platforms, indicating a critical need for improvement in service quality and responsiveness.

Our rental home canceled 30 minutes prior to check in time via email. Meanwhile I am driving my 84 year old elderly, very ill mother and 60 year deaf brother to Dallas TX (3 states away). VRBO left us hanging in a car for 4 hours before finding a place. We were literally homeless. The rental home was reserved 6 months prior and was a block away from where her only granddaughter was to be we'd the next day. They had to put us up in a motel far from the wedding site. They would only help us for that one night and left us to deal with the next night on our own. Meanwhile we needed to be at a wedding and family events. Because we were incapable of moving to yet another location that was cheaper than the motel we had no compensation or apologies for all the undue stress. It was crippling to my mother and for that this company is heartless, uncaring and discriminates to our most vulnerable! Unbelievable.
If you use this site you will be bombarded by daily junk email. If you ask them to stop they will want a telephone conversation to,"discuss" the issue! I just ended up blocking their $%&&%$ emails
Apparently VRBO is strictly an "advertising" company. We had an issue and we were told to contact the hosts. The hosts ignored us and VRBO told us it isn't their problem. We paid fines and fees to VRBO and would have been better off renting through a complete stranger. This is a warning to others not to make the same mistake we did.
We made a reservation via VRBO. The day after we paid for the reservation we received a message from the property owner requesting additional payment for things like electricity and expenses already covered under the reservation. We reported the message to VRBO and they said they can't do anything. What is the value of a customer a platform that doesn't protect the integrity of the transactions that take place? Any other platform would cancel the vendor who circumvents them to do such thing. Never again will I use them. I already report my transaction with the bank. Avoid VRBO at all costs.
The owner of Snowy Mountain Ranch near Laurel, MT provided false statements about the ranch & VRBO will not let me post a review.
I was very dissatisfied with the house we rented as it did not live up to expectations based on the pictures and claims in the advertisement. We were supposed to have five separate sleeping rooms, but the fifth had a broken sofa bed in it and was filthy!, and NOT USABLE, just a couple of examples. The price I was charged had hidden extra fees. And now a month after our stay I notice another charge from them on my credit card statement. I was told they sent an email about the charge. In that email they state that due to 'human error' as they suddenly found a discrepancy and are charging my card a whole lot more money! I will never use them again.
I, along with 3 old friends and spouses, rented a house on American Beach in Jacksonville for a recent Friday and Saturday. Check in at 4:00 pm Friday. At approximately 4:00 pm Friday the well which supplies the home with water malfunctioned due to lack of proper maintenance. No water to the home. The primary spent over an hour trying to contact VRBO to get problem fixed. At 8:30 pm Saturday night ( we are leaving the next morning) VRBOs solution is for all 8 of us to move to another property! They did refund $300 of the over $2000 we paid but had the audacity to tell the primary the didn't have to refund anything! THEY SHOULD HAVE REFUNDED HALF OF WHAT WE PAID!
I'll NEVER USE VERBO AGAIN!
This condo #502 at Raceway Condo was extremely fabulous! Clean, perfect location and beautiful view of the mountains.
I had a nice little trip planned with my wife and I through the honeymoon suites and VRBO in Tennessee. I live in Florida when storm/hurricane Ian came through it made most roads impossible to drive through. I'm also considered emergency critical for a municipality. VRBO insurance would not cover it nor would the owner Jeanie of honeymoon suites Tennessee.
Plain and simple stay away from both of these companies they are miserable no human compassion
The " host" blindsided us with a message our reservation was cancelled and gave only a partial refund and no explanation. My husband tried emailing the "host" on more than one occasion and they ghosted us. Received patronizing platitudes from VRBO and one person there said there was nothing they could do to get the rest of our deposit back without the owners approval. Finally, after much persistence, someone at VRBO said to hit our cancel button even though we were already cancelled and the property listing had disappeared. We got the remaining $400 back finally. What a useless"service" VRBO is. They are a website posing as a travel service. No concept of hospitality. And VRBO is already getting paid by the " hosts" to put their property on their website. $283 in Service fees paid by the guests is pure greed and price gouging on the part of VRBO. Will stay at hotels from now on where you are treated with courtesy and professionalism. VRBO is a school boys joke! Hospitality my $#*!! Just a money grab.
There's no 'guarantee' that will cover a hurricane. If they get your money, good luck on getting it back. You won't get your money back even if you have cancellation insurance. If you like to gamble, then go ahead. Whatever isn't right, won't get right. And you'll be without a memorable, fun vacation.
Filthy, garbage, mold, dirty sheets and towels, dirty mattresses, blood on doors, list goes on. Call the minute we got there bad neighborhood. Car being robbed 2 houses down and they don't want to refund us. Stuck at airport for 5 hours trying to get a place to stay pay for a new place which was hard to find on a weekend at 10pm at night. Please stay away from VRBO read their reviews, they need to be shut down.
I have booked a place using the VRBO website for a stay in WARSAW Poland for my wife and 3-year-old daughter. When they arrived at the place at the time of agreement there was no such building found and the phone number that was provided by the host wasn't valid. After contacting VRBO and spending 1 hour and 35 minutes "I was transferred from department to department" because the system wasn't working while my wife and daughter were outside in the cold waiting. In the end, my family was offered 3 options at the hostel stay which were 10$ a night for the inconvenience. I spent more on an uber ride to the place! Horrible service, please stay away!
Arrived at the property in San Francisco at the appointed time found the beds unmade, trash in the floor, no linens, kids toys and clothes piled on the floor. Contacted the property owner who agreed to a full refund. Departed the property and checked into a hotel. 30 days later the property owner is saying he can't initiate a refund, VRBO agrees that a refund is owned and all parties are now silent with no refund forthcoming. Terrible customer service on the part of VRBO and will never use them again. Avoid the listing 1520 A 2B1B Residential to Downtown SFO---Property ID *******
DO NO RENT THIS PROPERTY. YOU CANNOT GET UP TO THE PROPERTY BY VEHICLE. WHEN REACHING OUT TO UNWIND LUXURY THEY SAID THAT THE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO FIX THE ROAD UNTIL WE LEAVE. NO COMPENSATION FOR THIS. THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM.
1 month ago we stayed in apartment that had bed bugs, we physically saw them and have photo proof, have called them at least 7 times, opened multiple cases, and I still have not got my money back. Have called every week for a status update - they keep escalating to a different team, keep losing the pictures I send them of the bed bugs and proof that the owner would refund me 100%. No emails about any of the cases being opened or worked on. Just have to keep calling them. The owner would have just went ahead and done it but they couldnt because the listing and funds were frozen because of the bed bug issue and apparently previous stays of them as well. I call again and all the cases I opened are closed because they are "duplicates". Duplicates that their own staff opened in order to solve this problem!
And now they literally refuse to refund me. Why? They said my claims were rejected because there werent enough bed bugs. I asked how many did they want to see. They said it has to be an "infestation". So you are telling me that at 11pm on vacation when I get to the house you want me to search every crevice and crack for evidence of a bed bug infestation? Wtf? Bed bugs literally hide until the middle of the night when people are around and sleeping, but we are supposed to sit around and wait for that to happen to get refunded? Its madness!
$#*!tiest company I have ever spent money with, by far. Dont care about customer loyalty, highly incompetent, and very unorganized - and they are supposed to be the "premium" option for short term rentals. Just use airbnb instead.
While I have no complaints about the place where we stayed, nor towards the property manager who handled the vacation property, the vrbo website and its staff are pretty much useless when it comes to making changes or attempting to leave a review.
We ended up extending our stay, twice, and each time the only way to do this was to contact the property manager, who took care of the things immediately. Contacting vrbo is like jumping into a swamp and hoping you'll not drown in the mess. No answer was given by them in each case, nor was there any support provided.
As for the review, I contacted vrbo and they referred me back to the property manager. If I had my way, cut out vrbo and their fees, as they don't help in a positive way.
The host canceled our stay less than 24 hours before we were to arrive. We contacted VRBO to see if they would make any accommodations for us since we also purchased the insurance as well. Vrbo did not have any kind of protocol in regards to handling any kind of problems from what I can see. We took it upon ourselves to book at least one hotel night until we figure things out. Let's just say vrbo said that they would take care of two of our hotel nights for two of the hotel rooms & as of today it has been 3 months and we have never gotten a penny back from vrbo that would have offset the overages we paid for their cancelation of our paid in full air b&b. VRBO is absolutely garbage when it comes to handling or resolving issues. I am sure we were not the first to have an issue with a last minute cancelation by their host but apparently there is no protocol for handling any type of issues. ZERO STARS.
As a vacation rental owner who uses both VRBO and Airbnb, and technologist of over 30 years, I am surprised just how unreliable the VRBO app and website for owners is. As i write this review I'm dealing with yet another issue with VRBO where one of my property listings has corrupt data that has rendered the listing to be marked as "expired". VRBO support tells me this is due to a glitch in their system that some owners are experiencing. This has been going on for weeks and i keep getting the same story from VRBO support. In all my years i have never experienced software as unreliable as VRBO's. Whatever they are doing isn't working. They need new leadership that can provide a more reliable solution to guests and owners. Most of our bookings come from AirBnb anyhow so for peace of mind i've finally decided it's best to stop listing on VRBO.
Our family recently rented this condo. When we arrived, we found the home filthy! Our grandchildren 's feet were black from the dirt on the kitchen floor. My wife and daughter-in-law spent close to 3 hours cleaning after we arrived. There were dust bunnies upstairs on the ceiling, baseboards etc. Cereal under the bed, a broken toaster& very little cleaning supplies. The children's toys were either broken or missing parts. My wife called crying to the landlord to no avail. She also bought six sets of towels as theirs were perfect for washing your car! There was a new grill out back, which after speaking with the owner, I was afraid to use! We were charged $170 for a cleaning fee and I am hopeful that we get refunded, still waiting! We felt like we were hoodwinked about this whole ordeal!
Answer: There are many problems with listing with VRBO/HomeAway. The 1st is that it is the largest company of it's size. While that may mean that you get more exposure, you also have more competition for getting your listing seen. For example, your listing could be # 300 out of 2,000. Most people don't want to search that far to find what they want because they can usually find something else sooner. In order to get a higher listing, you must pay more. I pay the highest rates they have for my properties in TN # 191351, 189535, & 289723, i. E. over $1,500 each. Listing position is also based on a number of criteria which they mandate. We have no control over some of those criteria. For example, listing position is based on whether or not guests USE VRBO/HomeAway on line booking. Initially,. VRBO/HomeAway required that we OFFER on line booking in order to maximize our listing position, so I offered it. VRBO/HomeAway then changed their criteria & now guests must USE on line booking in order or my listing position drops. I have no control over whether or not they USE VRBO/HomeAway & I don't recommend it for several reasons (more on that if you're interested). Listing positions are also determined by the number & quality of reviews. Again, I have no control over whether or not someone writes a review nor how they rate a property. What may be a 5 Star for someone may only be a 3 Star for someone else, but I'm at their mercy to provide a review & to rate it well. There are many other factors that go into listing position. As I said, I try to maximize what I can & If I'm luck, my property will be listed around 50/200. I get much better response from FlipKey by TripAdvisor. As I mentioned, I pay VRBO/HomeAway over $1,500 for each property. I Pay FlipKey by TripAdvisor about $450/property for #'s 6588094, 2386143, & 3746421 & get much better results. The problem with FlipKey is that it's hard for someone to search for a specific property using the property #.
Answer: VRBO will not help anymore with anything. Homeaway bought them and there is no personal contact with owners anymore until they pay through the site. I don't know about negative reviews. Never see any. If there was a way to avoid VRBO and Someway I would do it; but they have the corner on the VACA rental market now.
Answer: I have the same problem. I don't think they have any.
Answer: Vrbo will NOT get involved in any way. They will not arbitrate on anyone's behalf. They are strictly an advertising website. Carefree travel insurance & all the other stuff is just to make renters feel more comfortable to rent. They hardly ever pay out if there is a real problem. You can sue in small claims court, in the city & state you rented in. The only defense you have is if you paid with a credit card to do a charge back, & even then its hard. You have to have documentation to prove you case. However, vrbo won't contest the chargeback if you can get your credit cad company to work with you. Best to leave a review that warns other renters to stay away. But vrbo approves the reviews before they are posted.
Answer: I have spoken with them so many times yesterday and today with no fix my problem. The number is 1-877-228-3145. I wish you better luck than I have had.
Answer: Absolutely nothing! Every change they make results in their making more money and owners making less. My bookings are down drastically. I would not sign up with VRBO.
Answer: Go with the standard listing if you have already paid. If not save your money and try homeescape.com. Homeaway/VRBO rolled out a new 9% service fee charged to your customers in addition to what you're already paying for. They did this without any warning to their customers. I found out after one of my repeat guests questioned the charge. I'm moving away from them and going with other options.
Answer: A: NEVER, EVER DEAL WITH ANY OWNERS OR PROPERTY MANAGERS THAT YOU HAVENT SPOKEN TO DIRECTLY. NEVER use any form of payment other than credit card. All CC's would refund you the money if you don't get the services. If they don't accept cards or allow payment through Homeaway, FIND ANOTHER PROPERTY OWNER WHO WILL or be prepared to take the chance. READ all reviews, if they don't have any you ARE taking a chance it's a scam or a dump (or a new property but be careful. NEVER make a large deposit EVER! VRBO has turned out to be reliable for us, never used Flipkey and AirBnB wouldn't use it - I want a large property not a room room share
Answer: Try airbnb to rent part of your home
Answer: Same issue for us. The house we rented had glowing reviews and when I tried to post an honest review it still has not been posted.
VRBO provides vacation rental listings by owner in the US and around the world.
