The overall reputation of the company reflects significant dissatisfaction among customers, particularly regarding its customer service and reliability. Many users report frustrating experiences with delayed refunds, poor communication, and unhelpful support staff. Complaints about properties not matching descriptions or being in unacceptable conditions are prevalent, leading to a loss of trust. While a few customers express occasional satisfaction with specific transactions, the overwhelming sentiment leans towards a lack of accountability and professionalism. This has resulted in a growing number of users opting for alternative platforms, indicating a critical need for improvement in service quality and responsiveness.

Do not, under any circumstance, use VRBO rentals. They cancelled our spring vacation plans to Myrtle Beach, after reserving and paying for our vacation 2 months ago. VRBO refused to give any compensation towards other rentals now that all other options are much more expensive. I was also told there was no one in management who would speak to me then, or call me back later. #vrbo #vrborentals #horrorstory #scammed #vrbovacation
VRBO used to be a wonderful company. They have lost their edge. They have given up on customer service and they have sent their customer service overseas. You will not reach anyone who speaks English. You cannot reach an account manager anymore. They do not Want you to understand their accounting. I have lost thousands by this company.
We must reach out to each other as owners to attack VRBO
I have sold three cabins because of the poor poor management by this woke company. As a retired physician I am in no fear.
I am concerned for those who count on VRBOFor their income.
I've been with VRBO since the creation of HomeAway.com. I've never had a single need of them for the 18+ years and recently needed to hold a security deposit back and long story short and 3 months of their dysfunction they suspended my account until I paid them $122.50.
I've been making them tens of thousands of dollars for over 18 years and they treated me like a deadbeat.
On top of that they don't have a clue of process and tracking within their department.
It was like dealing with a collection agency protocol from the 80's. "Don't call us, we will call you."
Another example of global corporate buyouts to become a behemoth at the expense of those who make their money.
I told them I was finished doing business with them and that using Airbnb and the plethora of other options were more than plenty for success.
Why would I pay them a fee, service charges all while they collect interest on my deposits when they don't offer anything in return.
Sad state of affairs for them, their new marketing is the smoke and mirrors to their greed…and We don't need to feed that

Booked property in Quebec City, but US citizens are restricted from Canada. We cancelled a month in advance. No refund despite many efforts to get it. The funds include a cleaning fee, taxes and service fee. Of course there was nothing to clean, we were never there.
The property may have been rented again by a Canadian (no border crossing and no restrictions to stay).
In Aug 2021, my friends and I booked a trip to Austin Tx for a birthday and to also attend A Circuit of the Americas event the weekend of October 22nd, 2021. We bought tickets for the event as well as airfare after we secured our housing On Aug 16,2021 through VRBO. Around Sept 10th, the property owner contacted us and canceled our reservation after the full amount was already paid for the property; They said that the rental had been booked since May 2021 from another site. We called customer service immediately and although they refunded our money- we were left without housing for the event. Everything was booked, way too expensive and/or didn't fit our group size or needs. I contacted Better Business Bureau and the only thing Vrbo had to say was that it was on the property owner and not them. They made no effort to help in any capacity. I mean there is a reason we book trips in advance- am I right? My friends and I are out thousands of dollars thanks to this disaster and I am beyond upset with this company. THE OVER AND UNDER- we were offered a home that wasn't available, the property owner accepted the full amount for the home- kept our money for a month and then canceled on us, leaving us having to cancel the trip. This was the worst experience I have ever had and I am writing this review in hopes that people do not use this terrible service as it depleted my bank account and cost us a lot of grief, more work and heartache than anything else. I am a hardworking mother of two and this was supposed to be my big getaway. Please reconsider before using!
The Chemical Odor burned my eyes nose lungs and throat. My safety comes first. I did not stay and I called VRBO and they told me to open a window! This wasted an hour of my time. Please refund this stay in full or I will have to contact my Lawyer! I notified the owner of the problem and their response is to review the strict cancelation policy.
There company needs to check the properties. Set a rule, if the property has X amount of unresolved negative reviews in X time frame, they are out. Some of the properties are abismal.
Customer service is an Absolute Joke. Never in my life experienced such lack of effort to make a customer happy. Was with them for 20 years and will never have anything to do with them again. They held a guests money for 12 weeks after the guest visited. There was a mix up with reservation and rebooking and they were aware of what happened but said they could not overide their automatic system. Waited 3 months to get paid... talked to 6 'customer service' reps and all they did was spew back to me the way their system worked. Will never in my lifetime have anything to do with VRBO or Homeaway again. And the worst part of it was they did not give a $#*! about keeping a customer happy.
Stay away from this place(761, Jacques-Bédard; Quebec G2N 1E1).
The owner will charge you for damages that you didn't even do and with these website not protecting travelers its an easy scam for them!
I tried to work with VRBO support to get this sorted out with the owner of the property as I'm not getting any response from the owner but traveler's support is none existent, there is no way for you to dispute their easy money scheme!
Stay away from that address and VRBO! You've been warned!
SCAMMERS, DO NOT BOOK WITH VBRO!
We booked an apartment through Vrbo, and were told to call a certain phonenumber an hour before arrival. We did this but it went to voicemail every time, so we left several messages and sent text messages but no response. We didn't know what to do so we just went to the appartment but no one was there. We did enter the building because the front door was open, and it was a big mess (dogs barking, cigarette smoke and a lot of noise), this could not be the apartment that we saw on the website. In the end we had to book another (extremely expensive) hotel because we had nowhere to go and were left standing in the street with our suitcases on a very hot day... We had called Vrbo, first they hung up so we tried again, then luckily we were helped and it sounded hopeful, as if we would get our money back. Once at home we explained everything by email (as agreed on the phone) but we did not get our money back. In short: never book here!
Horrible horrible rude awful customer service. As a VRBO homeowner who has three properties and have rented with VRBO for almost 10 years. I recently had a customer stay and lie multiple times about not getting a full refund which they did. They stated they are only at the property for four hours when they were there for 10 hours, they made up the issue that was at the house and I took their word for it after having a company come out their alleged issue was never verified and in fact the very next day have another renter who gave a 5-star rating and raved about how great the property was. VRBO said and I quote they cannot remove the review even if the customer lies only if they use vulgar cursing would they remove I review. Judy the customer agent also confirmed that in fact I did give a full refund and VRBO kept their fees and did not refund. Avoids the customer complained and thought I had as the owner kept the money. No recourse no help pathetic service. Reviews are very important to many business but cheating lying I guess is okay and VRBO is booked as long as they get their money they don't care
We booked a holiday via VRBO. It turned out to be a scam and we never got our money back (£550). The customer service is non-existent. All we received was fake promises that someone would get back to us, which never happened. We called them daily for 3 weeks before realizing that VRBO is in fact a scam.
Do NOT rent from this owner ******* unless you want to ruin your stay in London, the owner is extremely rude and aggressive, super super super bitter! And of course, Vrbo is not gonna $#*! about it.
Garbage like platform with garbage like owner, guess they deserve each other.
Just a fair warning to anyone who is thinking about renting a property with AirBNB / VRBO / HomeAway / Short Term Rental Discussion. Don't. They are scammers and the reviews online show that for sure. I rented a 2 br 2 ba place in August and when I showed up for said rental it was only one room available shared with other tenants and a large dog and then said room was not even prepared for guests-no sheets, pillows, blankets, curtains or towels. So I cancelled my reservation based on this as I got there. I got acknowledgment from the owner via text and on the vrbo inbox that the place wasn't ready and he apologized but that's it. No refund approved because I cancelled after the 7 days prior to arrival. I have been back and forth with vrbo for a month to settle this and all they can say is "sorry nothing we can do". Don't use them if you can at all avoid them
I will never rent with them again. First of all you cant actually get ahold of someone and there are so many 3rd party contacts it is confusing. I tried to see if I could shift dates for a rental that took place during FIRE evacuations where air quality was over 300 and the roads were closed so I couldnt even reach the cabin I was trying to go to. I never asked for or expected a refund as I understand it was a natural disaster and out of their hands. But they were unwilling to compromise or work with me in any way. They told me I should still be able to get there even though it was unsafe and IMPOSSIBLE. So basically they charged me $1200 for a service I couldn't use. I wish I had read reviews before working with them. NEVER AGAIN
We had lots of issues with a filthy and ugly unit. On the last day, the water heater busted and flooded the apartment. The owner never answered and VRBO never offered a solution. Now, the owner doesn't answer to give me a refund and VRBO doesn't want to be responsible either... Horrible service, terrible experience, and I feel I've been robbed.
Terrible! You don't get back your deposit money! No one helps you! They never call back. I've been arguing with them for over a month and a half. There are no supervisors that can call you back. Its terrible! Still haven't received my money!
VRBO has done absolutely nothing to help me get some satisfaction from the rental property owner whose filthy lakefront property I rented. Left after 4 days and hoping for a FAIR reimbursement. Every time I talked to someone, I was eventually disconnected and, even tho they asked if they could call me back if this happened, no one did. They asked for pix - I sent them. They asked for details - I told them. They do NOTHING but pay lip service.
I have had good experiences with VRBO before but this one is unacceptable. I rented a property through them and decided because of the time of year I would get their cancellation insurance through their third company, but now after I had to cancel due to the growing fires in Lake Tahoe area, the insurance company is not honoring my claim and so I went to VRBO to right this, help me or at least give me a credit. They are unable or unwilling to help after two separate phone calls with their customer service.
Stay away from using VRBO. Use a site that does not allow owner to rent directly to you. VRBO does not assist you if you use them to rent then have problems or if the property is not as listed. Being that you have to pay before you can even rent, the owners can false advertise then refuse to refund you anything. I rented a house in SC using VRBO. The property was completely false advertised and we had numerous problems while there. The owner refused to assist and then after I posted a negative review, VRBO removed it and said the owner accused me of lying. I provided picture and texts supporting my claims and vrbo still would not post my review. So the owner can continue ripping people off and vrbo will do nothing to assist and then will remove your negative review if you post. The owners know this, so they just keep doing the same thing to renter after renter. Use another trusted site to rent. Vrbo is the worst site I have every used to book a vacation on. Never again!
Answer: There are many problems with listing with VRBO/HomeAway. The 1st is that it is the largest company of it's size. While that may mean that you get more exposure, you also have more competition for getting your listing seen. For example, your listing could be # 300 out of 2,000. Most people don't want to search that far to find what they want because they can usually find something else sooner. In order to get a higher listing, you must pay more. I pay the highest rates they have for my properties in TN # 191351, 189535, & 289723, i. E. over $1,500 each. Listing position is also based on a number of criteria which they mandate. We have no control over some of those criteria. For example, listing position is based on whether or not guests USE VRBO/HomeAway on line booking. Initially,. VRBO/HomeAway required that we OFFER on line booking in order to maximize our listing position, so I offered it. VRBO/HomeAway then changed their criteria & now guests must USE on line booking in order or my listing position drops. I have no control over whether or not they USE VRBO/HomeAway & I don't recommend it for several reasons (more on that if you're interested). Listing positions are also determined by the number & quality of reviews. Again, I have no control over whether or not someone writes a review nor how they rate a property. What may be a 5 Star for someone may only be a 3 Star for someone else, but I'm at their mercy to provide a review & to rate it well. There are many other factors that go into listing position. As I said, I try to maximize what I can & If I'm luck, my property will be listed around 50/200. I get much better response from FlipKey by TripAdvisor. As I mentioned, I pay VRBO/HomeAway over $1,500 for each property. I Pay FlipKey by TripAdvisor about $450/property for #'s 6588094, 2386143, & 3746421 & get much better results. The problem with FlipKey is that it's hard for someone to search for a specific property using the property #.
Answer: VRBO will not help anymore with anything. Homeaway bought them and there is no personal contact with owners anymore until they pay through the site. I don't know about negative reviews. Never see any. If there was a way to avoid VRBO and Someway I would do it; but they have the corner on the VACA rental market now.
Answer: I have the same problem. I don't think they have any.
Answer: Vrbo will NOT get involved in any way. They will not arbitrate on anyone's behalf. They are strictly an advertising website. Carefree travel insurance & all the other stuff is just to make renters feel more comfortable to rent. They hardly ever pay out if there is a real problem. You can sue in small claims court, in the city & state you rented in. The only defense you have is if you paid with a credit card to do a charge back, & even then its hard. You have to have documentation to prove you case. However, vrbo won't contest the chargeback if you can get your credit cad company to work with you. Best to leave a review that warns other renters to stay away. But vrbo approves the reviews before they are posted.
Answer: I have spoken with them so many times yesterday and today with no fix my problem. The number is 1-877-228-3145. I wish you better luck than I have had.
Answer: Absolutely nothing! Every change they make results in their making more money and owners making less. My bookings are down drastically. I would not sign up with VRBO.
Answer: Go with the standard listing if you have already paid. If not save your money and try homeescape.com. Homeaway/VRBO rolled out a new 9% service fee charged to your customers in addition to what you're already paying for. They did this without any warning to their customers. I found out after one of my repeat guests questioned the charge. I'm moving away from them and going with other options.
Answer: A: NEVER, EVER DEAL WITH ANY OWNERS OR PROPERTY MANAGERS THAT YOU HAVENT SPOKEN TO DIRECTLY. NEVER use any form of payment other than credit card. All CC's would refund you the money if you don't get the services. If they don't accept cards or allow payment through Homeaway, FIND ANOTHER PROPERTY OWNER WHO WILL or be prepared to take the chance. READ all reviews, if they don't have any you ARE taking a chance it's a scam or a dump (or a new property but be careful. NEVER make a large deposit EVER! VRBO has turned out to be reliable for us, never used Flipkey and AirBnB wouldn't use it - I want a large property not a room room share
Answer: Try airbnb to rent part of your home
Answer: Same issue for us. The house we rented had glowing reviews and when I tried to post an honest review it still has not been posted.
VRBO provides vacation rental listings by owner in the US and around the world.
