No warning, or if there was one it was not adequate since they send me countless emails daily and i just instantly erase them. I had 1400 members and annual membership due. It was free to be in the group but had to pay the due for the year to attend. Thats fine i had long time users some would not pay one year but come back. No warning overnight my members went from 1400 something to barely 100 members (the current paid members). I haven't been able to successfully have a meetup in months. They booted all of my members then they charged me $90! Also new design sucks hate it. Complained to them on Facebook no one responds, through the site no one responds. I want my $90 back they destroyed my group and I have had ONE meetup since November. I used to have 2-3 a month. The one meetup that i did have was my mostly my friends. Disputing it on my AMEX hope i win. They suck now. Sad to have my group end but i don't want to start over and i hate the new site.
When you're a transplant and often in some states many people are and if you don't have children it's difficult to meet people, I've been doing it a little over a year and met many people but 3 people that I can call outside of meetup and do things with it's a great way to meet people often hit or miss but never had a bad experience
I have been a member and also an organizer of several meetups. I was hoping to make some new friends. What a waste of time for the most part. Anyone who is "normal" already has friends and meetup is good for a fill in when they are bored. Then there are the Debbie downers and negative Nancy's who want to use the organizer and other members as their personal psychotherapist. Listening to other people's problems and health issues are not my idea of a good time. I have my own problems. Lastly you have the members who think the organizer is their private cruise director or court jester. Put on the earth to entertain them. The biggest joke of all is that the gets to pay $14.99 a month to do this, plan and execute all events, and then actually get reviewed! Imagine a completely volunteer position where people can actually rate you on a 1-5 star basis! Talk about insanity. I deleted my account and swear to never return.
Specifically, the hiking and beach volleyball meet ups have been enjoyable. Avoid the Salsa and other dance classes-way to serious. I like to dance for fun, and many that attend the classes are regulars, so you pay the cover, and watch the strut, and learning nothing. Received a kickball invitation, only to be ignored or avoided when requesting basic information on joining a team.
You may have had 50,000 people sign up for your 1000 free supported (Resist What?) groups but you will lose many more thousands of people and groups that have subscribed. Its ok to stick with your beliefs but realize you may not be in business much longer. It will be hard to retract your stand now.
I'm a member not an organiser. There is no screening. This one organiser is stealing money i. E taking deposits for an event and running off with the money. Setting up another group and doing the same thing. I complained and all I got was "sorry, nothing to do with us"
Meetup groups are for social misfits, people who just don't fit in and who can't communicate. I have met many people at Meetup events, both men and women, who needed to take an anger management class. If you're looking to expand your social circle, avoid Meetup at all costs. Meetup sucks.
A little expensive but the results as being a participant are good. To run a site is work and lots of emails. You can set it up not to get the emails
Problems running a group is like running an organization. Only as good as it's members. Stop putting it down already.

I am an organizer of a large Meetup group. There is so much instability in the system. I have reported 20-30 problems to them over the last few months but nothing gets done. Their standard response is to clear cache and try again. They do not even try very hard to reproduce problems reported. They keep making cosmetic changes to the look and feel but have not provided any new features in the last 10 years. In fact they keep going backward as far as features are concerned & things that worked before, do not. ABSOLUTELY THE WORST SITE.
Would be nice if you "froze" groups instead of deleting them when the payment stops. Maybe it would also encourage people to unfroze them more than restarting them from scratch would. And people would feel better about your product. It's not like storing the data was really expensive.
I'd been looking for a group to join, any group that I had something in common with. One group was NYC Fibroids Meetup. Well this was over 3 years ago, and I'm still pending, whatever that means. I then found our Meetup was acquired by WeWork. What a company that deals in spaces for rent has to do with an online group such as Meetup I'll never know. The organizer of the group never responded. I came to the realization they were exclusive
The organizer Lorraine LIES!. This is a group for woman in there 20's and 30's and the organizer is in her 40's. She also lets men join in the Facebook page and and ignores members who don't pay the VIP membership. I was basically ignored at one of the events because I was new and not considered "Gorgeous" to be included. This organizer only cares about money and attention. Don't join GorgeousGirlsofSC (southern california) it will be a horrible experience if you are looking for real friends.In my opinion.
Meetup is one of the scummiest sites going. By this I mean meetup.com, not all the fabulous members and organizers who are unfortunately using it. I have had very little good dealing with meetup in the last while (since they cut out most of their editing options and pissed many organizers off) I have been blocked from commenting on their boards after posting the letter they sent me after I registered a complaint with them. They refuse to consult with or acknowledge the organizers who are paying them! All you get is a copy and paste generic letter and a shove under the carpet. From what I can tell they place no value the people who use the service.
That being said, the groups, organizers and members are fabulous! I have made many friends who I adore! I hope in the future these group can move elsewhere.
What have your techs been smoking? Now it looks like I have to buy an IPAD to get some of the features to work. I can't even make a comment on my events. And that's only part of the problems. Read your reviews and comments!
I'm glad to see I am not the only one offended by Meetup's big push for their personal political agenda. I have been a Meetup member for almost 11 years and an organizer for 3 years. I joined to meet new people and make like-minded friends, not to have a political agenda shoved at me. I am moving both of my groups elsewhere and I will not come back to Meetup.
You really have to go and try some out. Some are worth the $ and others just rip you off and all they care about doing is TAKING your $ and offering very little (i. E. Soul City Social Club). The more the charge the more your should be weary or just avoid them completely.
You have made many changes over the last year all of which have created issues with me running my group in an efficient manner. Now you have released the absolutely worst version of all! This is not an effective way to run a business where you are charging me to use your site and now you are making it difficult! Can't believe you released such a poor version of this site!
I wrote a very negative review of MeetUp a while back but am happy to report that the new owners are finally starting to get their act together. It's not perfect but I find that response time and accuracy is faster and better now. I can now access the calendar more easily. And there is now a way to note that guests attended (though it is tricky to find where - click on the host's info to change the number of guests).
Every "improvement" has made a great site worse. The alternatives I have found are not promising. Any suggestions?!
They are really great and we meet at different dog parks every weekend, the people are very nice and friendly. The site is really organized and it's easy to see who is going and I appreciate the updated emails. We always have a great time and they keep the meetups within a 12 or less mile radius. I just wish their was one for mountain bikers in this area.
When I joined Meetup in 2008, it was well-done and well-run. I can do code and photography, so I was quickly made an "Assistant Organizer", and life was good for a few years. Then came the "NewMeetup" of 2011, an even-worse "upgrade" in 2013, and the site totally jumped the shark in 2017. Customer service was never very good, but it has become non-existent, and subscription fees keep increasing, while features disappear without notice. All but one of the organizers I met in 2008-2009 have left Meetup, and almost all the newer organizers are business owners who use the site as an advertising platform, for which the subscription fee is a deductible expense. For anyone else, I can't imagine Meetup being of any more use than Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
