They are bad as they banned me just for having a bot account and a player acccount so please do not try this website or appp
Probably it's the best chess site around, but you can get unjustly defamed here. I played chess since 13 years. My account was banned for cheating after over ******* games and over 2088 hours of playing, but I never did it. I'm an agonistic chess player and my reputation was unjustly damaged by them. Only play anonymous here.
Also horrible attitude of the moderators. The ones I spoke to were arrogant, rude and seemed not to care much about doing the right thing. The feeling I had when speaking with them was they were people who did that job to enjoy the """"""power"""""" (sigh).
Letting people doing whatever they want without fearing any consequence for wrongdoings leads to abuse, always, and yes, lichess moderators do abuse their power.
I also suspect bad faith, because I've been banned very soon after I harschly criticized in the forum a friend of them (a person who sold chess lessons for 50 $/hour despite being a beginner, curiously advertised in the lichess homepage all the time).
Last but not least, the forum is a den of bullies. The average age is obviously very low, but the adults there not only don't punish bully-behaviour, but they're sometimes even more bully-like than the kids themselves. Absolutely toxic place and with great potential to deal serious psychological damage to younger people.
If you want to play here the site is great, but play ANONYMOUS and don't talk with anyone (something I would recommend anyway - not much to gain from befriending strangers online).
Tek iyi yanı ücretsiz olması. Moderatörler berbat. Uzak durun bu çöplükten. Gereksiz yere ban yiyorsunuz. Aklınız varsa bu siteye emek harcamayın
The good news: It's free!
The bad news: It's not worth paying for. Not very user friendly and most of the players appear to be bots.
I'm a long-time chess player and this site is horrible. You are playing with bots instead of real people and they ban you for no reason. There are a lot of much better alternatives for my fellow players out there. Please don't waste your time on this garbage, you can do better.
Corruption, boorish attitude of moderators and users. They threw me into a ban supposedly for cheating, in fact I didn't cheat. I do not recommend lichess.org.
https://lichess.org/@/Megarobot, https://lichess.org/@/SergeyVoronChess - bullies, that have bullying me for 1 year. The Lichess did nothing with them, but when I responded to their insults, my first account was closed, second was muted and third was marked as ToS violation.
Terrible site, very laggy I lost a tournament because of that also, the time given to play the fist move should be increased to like 2 minutes. In a real tournament you don't lose until all you time is drained. However, I must give credit to the unlimited puzzle limit, something that some sites like chess.com don't offer
Go see an example game. Opponent moved knights up and so did I, then opponent castled. Was I able to castle similarly? NO! This site should be reported to the authorities for how horrible the treatment is.I've lost way too many games from not being able to castle.

Go view each image. First one is when I am logged in so you can see what I wrote in the chat window. When logged out there is nothing in the chat window because only I could see what I wrote and no one else. Highly frustrating when trying to chat and no one can see my response whenever they say something to me. The admins are so petty. I tried to get a video capture program on my pc to show what happens at end of games but nothing I tried free works on my pc. Late in games, when have like 8 seconds on clock, it suddenly goes to zero. When there is time added per move I should be able to make 10-20 or more moves still. It's unbelievable lichess is so shameful in what it does to me.
Click on my my name and see my profile. You won't be able to see what I wrote about myself because the site shadowbanned me. Also, in the profile you can see I made a forum post. I am able to view it when logged in but you will see a 404 error, page does not exist if you are not me viewing it when I am logged in. Such horrible treatment. It's absolutely outrageous.
My son was trying to login to join tournament on lichess and by mistake he forgot to close the tab and played on other tab. Even though he won first round in tournament lichess claim him for computer assistance which he was not doing. I know this as I was in that room. I can't guide him because I don't know anything of chess.
All Internet fora are toxic. Twitter leads the way and even the less powerful Duolingo, where highschoolers dwell, is full of toxicity. Stackexchange was also a contender for a long time. However, the difference here is that the vocal minority and the gatekeepers has the most say.
They tout for feedback; but the moment someone even remotely suggest something new... guess what? It is massively downvoted. Generally, people who have high rating tend to have high intelligence who lack social skills. And this forum is no exception. It is filled with nerds and pseudointellects (probably with super high IQ) devoid of people skills with gaucheries who takes everything literally like Spock overanalyzing every syllable.
They tout to report suspicious activity. But they pin the blame on you for lack of any evidence. For apparent logical people, some of the gatekeepers are the dumbest in the world.
I downvoted several posts and hearted one. I immediately received a DM whose screenshot I attached. So if others downvote my post, then "oh oh it means they just disagree with you". But if I give them dosage of the same medicine, then I am being a hater. Rule for thee, but not for me?
Besides in a truly Democratic system anyone is entitled to leave an opinion via voting without having to follow up with repercussion, harassment and policing. As I said, lack of people skills. You cannot dictate who will like what or what YOU think should be upvoted or not. Your mileage will vary.
Basically they police your behavior in forum judging from the abovementioned behavior. And just like all the woke corporate nonsense, they once posted a long-winded screed about immediate termination or impediment right after Ukraine-war was launched going as far as putting embargo on Russian accounts or something of that line. Anyone who criticized it got their threads locked down in an authoritarian fashion.
I understand it is 'their' forum and they are privy to do anything they want - as am I entitled to my opinion.
Their UI is excellent and minimal of all the clutters unlike chess(dot)com. This is the only reason I am sticking to the website cutting all participation in their toxic forum.

Free chess with no ads. Where do you find it? Not on chess.com, of course. It is a great platform. Probably the best chess platform on the planet. Very Intuitive and Useful. Ignore the bad reviews. Definitely
100% true… half the time you're playing a bot!
Usually when Not enough players on line. Also lots of cheats.
I was in AP GovPol playing against a friend and I consistently beat him using this website. Great user interface!
Lichess = merde, nul…
Only poor people who are jealous like this site. No proper analysis like chess.com. Only positive thing in this is that it is totally free.
It's honestly disgusting how badly managed this platform is. Every 2 or 3rd player is abusive, racist and homophobic. If you report that individual to moderators, the MOST they will do is timeout that person for EIGHT minutes. That is the penalty for threatening death and hostility upon other chess players -- 8 minutes in timeout. What an awful joke.
Answer: Legit, but if you have political views differing from an administrator, you may get shadow-banned.
