Last year (2022) I spent 6 hours trying to set up an ID.me account, including two phone calls to people who were supposed to help me with it, and I got nowhere. I swore that all my future communications with the IRS would be via snail mail.
This year (2023), I was able to set the whole thing up in half an hour with the help of a very nice man who walked me through it.
So if you tried it last year and swore never again, give it one more try before you decide to go retro.
Difficult to do took along time and even called the help line I was lucky a va rep I know was able to get it working.

This process is very simple, they have a wide variety of documents you can use to prove your identity. After gathering and uploading the documents, the phone call process was less than 2 minutes.
