What a complete waste of everyones time! What exactly do you get with the free service? If you want to make any contact with anyone, you have to pay! There is no free service! What a rip off! Stay away and save your time and energy, both of which you don't have otherwise you wouldn't need their 'services'!
Unethical and nontransparent business practice!
They kept charging my card for 5 months straight and I was not brought to awareness until my husband asked me about the monthly charge. I subcribed for 1 month and canceled the next month but never got any confirmation email. They said because of that they could not refund/credit my account.
I believe they make money by charging people like this, not because of their services/products. They took $120 from me without any receipt/notice! Imagine $120 x thousand of members who also get charged without a clue? They can not survive long with this dirty and unethical way of doing business.
Awful company!
Hi Percy, It is stated on the upgrade page and in our Terms of Use that all of our subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled. Any time a cancellation occurs on an account, you will receive a confirmation message both to your personal email, and to your Care.com inbox. If for some reason you haven't gotten that email, you can always contact us to make sure the cancellation has gone through. Please refer to our Terms of Use to review our Auto Renewal and Refund policies for more information. We apologize for your experience, but do hope you were able to find the care you were looking for!
This worked for us to find an excellent home health caregiver BUT you need to really do screening work yourself to make sure the person is suitable AND unfortunately like many on-line vendors, figuring out how to actually cancel your auto-renew subscription requires much clicking and reading of squinty-tiny print. Once you select cancel on one screen you are auto redirected to another screen where it is very easy to undo the cancellation if you are not careful. If a company offers a good membership subscription service, they should not have to stoop to making it challenging to cancel in order to maintain revenue.
Hi Diane! We're happy to hear you were able to find a caregiver using our site! While we do some background checks, we always recommend families do their own screening as well. We have great resources on our Safety Center that you can check out for tips and suggestions to help with the screening process!
We appreciate your feedback about the cancellation procedure, and would be happy to pass it on to our team. It's important to make sure you always get a confirmation after cancelling the subscription - otherwise, you can always call or email us to make sure it works!
KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR CREDIT CARD BILL THAT YOU USE TO PAY FOR CARE.COM
I signed up for the basic membership and was told it would be a one month subscription. They never stopped billing me and I didn't realize it until five months later. If I got a sitter out of it I wouldn't be too upset but I had no luck. I received 7 messages from people interested in taking care of my disabled son the fist week. Five of them didn't respond back to me when I returned their calls and two decided the hours weren't for them. I never received another mesaage after the first three weeks. When I realized they were still charging me five months later I called for a refund and Dianne and Cara on the CARE TEAM said they couldn't refund my cash. I wouldn't have a problem if I was receiving e mails regularly but I didn't receive one message after the first month. They literally stole $175 off me. Stay away from care.com due to their deceiptful business practices. They should be ashamed of themselves for the way they handled my sitaution.
Hi Gary,
We first want to apologize you were unable to find someone that met your needs through Care.com. Care.com is not an agency, and all of the caregivers are individuals who have created accounts on their own. Secondly, all of our subscriptions are set up to automatically renew until cancelled. Ultimately, it is the member's responsibility to cancel the subscription when they are done using the service. Feel free to browse our Terms of Use for more information on our Auto Renewal and our Refund policies. We again apologize for your dissatisfaction, and wish you and your family all the best.
Avoid care.com. My experience with them had been horrible. They are trying to force me into paying the for a month of service that I did not use. I signed up and canceled at the same time when I realizes that they were trying to charge me 159 for a year of service that I did not want. I then opted out. This only take place after they have gotten all your information, that's when the 159 charge appear. They also set it you for you to send messages first then I looks as if you used their services. They will continue to send you emails with responders. Although you have stopped services. I contacted them and told them of this. Their response to me was that I have to pay anyway. Why because of the messages and response to the messages. I say but I called and canceled right after I had seen what was happening. Not a day later, the very minute I signed up, I called to cancel, never the less they insist I must pay them 40$ this is horrible. I will advise everyone I can to never sign up with then, on top of that this was to be the one month free trail.
Hi Silvia, We are sorry if you misunderstood one of the subscriptions that you had signed up for. We have three options, a monthly subscription at $39, a quarterly subscription at $79, and a yearly subscription at $149. If you choose to sign up for the quarterly or yearly subscription, you do agree to pay for the full amount of time you signed up for. We understand that it can get confusing if these options are being charged in monthly installments, and apologize if you were confused by this billing. When you sign up for a year, for example, you are paying a much smaller price per month than if you were to only sign up for a monthly subscription.
I was amazingly surprised at how many people have been terminated from Care.com without explaination. I hired an attorney who can not get any information, based on what we all signed saying we can be terminated for any reason at any time without explaination.
Someone, an attorney friend of mine who knows how contracts like this work. She has suggested going on the news or reporting it to the news.
Anyone here willing to do that in there area? I am in the Boston area, and am looking for people to join in. It would also be wonderful if we all did it on our own local news.
What do ya think?

As far as finding someone to take care of my children, Care.com was a good resource. Just irritated because I signed up for the "1 Month Premium Option" but I didn't read the fine print where it said my credit card was going to automatically be renewed each month. What is the point of having options like 1 month, 12 month, options if you are going to charge us until we call to cancel. Some states are making laws to prevent this type of gouging... And it gets old having to go back to every company you give your credit card and make sure they aren't charging you. I started with 3 stars but got more irritated the more I started writing and the fact that it has taken time and money away from me. Neither of which I have much of. Neither do you-so be careful when you sign up for care.com
We're glad to hear that Care.com was a good resource for you and your family. While our subscriptions are set to automatically renew until cancelled, you can edit this setting at any point on your own in your Account & Settings page. We set our subscriptions to automatically renew because we wouldn't want to cut off communications between you and caregivers at the end of a month. Many members like this feature as well because it gives them unlimited access to a community of caregivers in their area. We recommend looking at our Terms of Use to see if you are eligible for any refunds, or contacting our Member Care department. We do apologize for your experience, but are glad to hear you were able to hire someone through the site!
My daughter signed up with my permission and I was sent a confirmation email to approve. I tried and it came up with 5 questions I needed to answer to "prove" who I was. The database is way way outdated, vague, and unreliable. It asked me if I recognized random first names which I didnt and an addresss from over 20 years (actually probably close to 30 years ago) from my college days that I am surprised I remembered! I felt stalked and failed because I apparently didnt recognize a random name like Paul. A legit organization would ask for ID not some sketchy internet search and guess.
Hi WH, we take safety and security very seriously on the site and we have a variety features on the site to ensure safety, especially for our teen members. The intention is to ask questions that only a parent would be able to answer. All of this information is checked against a number of databases and resources. We apologize for any inconvenience with the process, but assure you this was for the safety and privacy of your daughter.
AVOID Care.com at all costs. I signed up as a free member to find jobs. They would not accept my previous employment, profile picture (they kept saying it's too pixelated, yet they want people to upload huge pictures. If you upload a small picture, they deny that picture as well.) From what other people have told me, care.com doesn't approve anyone's profile, references, previous employment etc unless you PAY them to upgrade or pay to have a background check done. They would not accept my references I listed, because I didn't provide telephone numbers for my references (I didn't provide phone numbers because my references are hearing impaired.) Care.com is a scam company and is also discriminatory. After they refused my references, I deleted my account and unsubcribed from receiving any future emails from them, yet they keep contacting me and refuse to remove me from their mailing list.
Hi Jael, you do not need to upgrade to the Premium membership or purchase a background check to be able to get your account approved. We apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding, but everything that is posted publicly on the site or any change you make to your profile needs to go through our approval process. If something is not approved, we do send you a message notifying you. We encourage you to browse our Frequently Asked Questions page for more specific information regarding the approval process. In terms of the references, only the first and last name and the email address of the reference are required, the phone number is optional. Again, we are sorry if this is something that was not made clear to you on the site. Further, feel free to send us a message here or contact us to make sure that you have been successfully removed from our email list.
Have been a premium member caregiver on Care.com for a few years and they decided to close my account a few weeks ago for no reason whatsoever. I had 14 very positive reviews from other Care.com families on my account and a clean background check. I called Care.com after receiving an e-mail about my account closure and they didn't give me any reasons for deleting a member who is in good standing. This is unacceptable.
We do apologize, Mariah, but per our Terms of Use, which all members agree to upon enrollment, Care.com reserves the right to remove a member for any reason or no reason, with or without notice. While we have no obligation to notify you of the reason for your termination and generally do not provide this information, if you send us a message with the email associated with your account, we would be happy to look into it and see if there is anything further we would be able to do.
The auto-renewing subscription employed by Care.com is in violation of California SB 340, which took effect on December 1,2010. The California Negative Option Law was specifically implemented to end the practice of ongoing charging of consumer credit cards without the consumers' explicit consent. Care.com is inviolation of multiple aspects.
A copy of the Legislation is readily available at www.leginfo.ca.gov. ("Business and Professions Code Section *******-*******")
Many states in addition to California have implemented similar legislation.
Specific violations include:
(c): "Clear and conspicuous"... means in lager type than the surrounding text…"
The copy of the webpage provided by the merchant readily shows that the type referring to automatic renewal is not larger than the surrounding text.
(a) (1): "It shall be unlawful for any business making an automatic renewal or continuous service offer to a consumer in this state to... fail to present the automatic renewal offer terms or continuous service offer terms in a clear and conspicuous manner…"
The wording used by Care.com is not compliant with "clear and conspicuous". The term "subscription" is generally reserved for the purchase of ongoing services, not a single purchase, therefore customers purchasing "1-month" are not purchasing a "subscription". "Subscription" is located under the "3-Month" and "12-Month" plans ("subscriptions"). Because a customer purchasing "1-month" is not purchasing a "subscription", the automatic renewal plan is not invoked.
Unfortunately, Care.com is the subject of literally hundreds of similar complaints. It would behoove them to ammend current business practices in accordance with the law.
I created a profile as a caretaker. THIS SITE IS A SHAM! BEWARE! I had MULTIPLE problems creating a profile and was blocked from listing my previous work history. They have my work experience as rejected. Who's going to give me a job now. I have a clean background check, but nobody is going to care. The same jobs have been posted for weeks and I'm not even sure these are real. They are collecting money for absolutely nothing. When I tried to cancel they tell me my subscription will cancel the day AFTER my next payment is due...!
Hi Erika, We are so sorry you are having trouble with the account! Please feel free to send us a private message with your concerns and I would be happy to look in to it for you and see what I can do to help you out! All jobs on the site have been posted by families, and if they are posted, they are still open to apply to. If you have set your account to cancel or downgrade, it will do so at the end of your billing cycle and you will not be billed beyond the subscription plan you had initially chosen. I apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding, but I hope this helps clarify things!
I was looking for a pet sitter in July so I signed up for a month trial. The only responses I received were from sitters who wanted to live in or charged more than a kennel. I did not hire a care. Com sitter nor did I use it again but I have been charged 40 dollars a month for 4 months after that. While it does state in the fine print you will be charged if you do not cancel it is easily missed. I would not recommend this site. You could end up getting charged over a hundred dollars with nothing to show for it this is a sneaky way for a company to make money for nothing
Hi Bonnie, We offer a free basic membership where you are able to search for caregivers in your area and post a job saying specifically what it is you are looking for. This is a great way to see if the site is going to be something that will work for you, and to see if there are people in your area who are interested and available in the position. We're sorry if you were unable to find a pet sitter who met your needs. It is stated on the upgrade page that all of our subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled, and is also in our Terms of Use which you had agreed to upon enrollment. We again apologize about the experience, but do hope you were able to find the care you were looking for.
I went on Care.com because I was looking for a new babysitter on a short notice. I signed up for a month and ended up getting charged for three more months, when I was not even using the site. I was too busy trying to get a new babysitter to pay close attention to my bills and Care.com was only too happy to take advantage of the turmoil in my life to sneak in over $100 worth of monthly fees. I would not recommend this site to anyone. Sitter city has a lot more choices and does not take advantage of your vulnerability. You sign up for a month and get charged for a month not like at Care.com when you sign up for a month and get charged for 4.
Hi Olga, our subscriptions are set up to automatically renew as a convenience so we do not interrupt a member's access to caregivers if they are in the middle of a search. Our automatic renewal policy is stated on the upgrade page as well as in the Terms of Use, but I apologize if this was not made clear. Please feel free to contact us via our Contact Us page and we’d be happy to look into your account further and see what we can do to help.
They are HORRIBLE! I have been a STNA for almost 10 years, I love animals and I also have experience with the disabled. When I signed up to find a job everything was fine, I completed my profile and everything, a couple days later I receive a message from some dumb a** saying they closed my account because my background check came back bad! And I don't understand becaus there is nothing on my background and they didn't want to hear it at all! They are fake dumb and has horrible customer service! I wouldn't recommend this site to anyone
Hi Candice, Please contact us regarding this so we can look in to the account and see if there is anything we would be able to do for you. I'm sorry if you had a bad experience with our customer service team, and do hope we will be able to resolve the issue for you!
Regarding the response to my complaint below, I am baffled by Care.com's consistent lack of accountability for their unsavory business practices, and proposing no solutions to the litany of complaints on the exact same issue. There is no need for me to repeat them. There are literally thousands of them across the Internet. Just look at the reviews placed here! Go to any review site and you will see the same things! Type "Care.com fraud" into Google and read. This company is a scam. It's founder and self-proclaimed liar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ33SqAOFLw), Ms. Sheila Marcelo, masquerades as a caring, informed businesswoman who wishes to create a caring community for mothers. Why doesn't she address this situation when her company receives so much negative publicity all over the Internet? This woman is a fraud and so is her company. At some point, this issue will catch up with Care.com, either through a class action lawsuit or from the deluge of negative publicity it gets.
Hi Brandon,
We could not locate your other complaint; however we do appreciate your feedback. We definitely do take our member's concerns into account when making changes and updates to the site and welcome our member's to share their opinions with us in an effort to better our user experience. Our site is always evolving and our members are at the utmost importance to us and are the reason for our mission. We understand you have not had a satisfying experience while using care.com, and we do apologize for anything we may have done to upset you.
Stay away from Care.com. They're happy to take your money but care nothing about their members. So many of the negative reviews express my same experience with this unfortunate company.
Hi Suzanne, we do take our member's concerns very seriously and apologize if you feel that was not your experience. We are always looking for ways to improve our site and services and urge all members to contact us with any feedback they may have in regards to their experience.
I did not find anyone worth while to care for my soon-to-be twins. So, I stopped using the site after 2 months of my 3 month subscription. The fine print gets you every time. Hadn't used the site in months, got a 3 month charge on 12/6/13. The rep, Jessica, stated that it renewed on 12/4/13, & since I was calling on 1/6/14, she would not be able to refund me the membership. The call center was closed on 1/4/14 & 1/5/14 because they are only open Monday-Friday. 2 days late in calling even though I couldn't reach anyone on 1/4/14 and you can't give me a refund! Great customer service... and I mean this in the most scarcastic way possible. I asked to speak with a manager & Jessica stated that it wasn't possible; instead, I would have to give her my contact info (phone number & email) & someone would reach me by the end of the business day via phone or email. What a crock! Oh & that phone number to reach them at is the hardest thing to find on their website! It's hidden... all respectable companies have their phone number under the 'Contact Us' tab, not care.com. It's as if they want you to give up & not bother them. Again, what a crock!
Hi Tom, I am sorry to hear about your customer service experience with care.com. Please contact us and reference your complaint and we will take care of this for you as soon as possible.
If I could give them 0 stars I would. We have a group of 250+ people who have all signed a petition and are filing a class action lawsuit against them. There are a couple morbidly obese morons that work there by the names of Caitlin and Laurie, both of whom are extremely racist white women. When I placed an ad stating that our housekeeper needed to remove their shoes upon entering our house, they cancelled my account abruptly and without reason and after 20 emails and calls, finally got Caitlin to put down her jelly donut and answer my call, and she said "we dont understand your culture here in america and we dont want your kind of people on our site." to which i replied "that is very discriminatory" and she replied "well we can cancel your account for any reason we want." Unfortunately for her, laws in the USA still apply despite whatever moronic personal company policies she thinks she is abiding by, and we are going to sue the living hell out of them and have their entire operation shut down. I also have a PR team that isgoing to start taking all the stories of Care.com racism and discriminations and publicize all of them for people to know. Its about time their competition gets the leg up and care gets shut down. Disgusting awful KKK-wannabee employees. BOYCOTT THEM AND WRITE THEM LETTERS EXPRESSING YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT THIS!
I just saw a charge on my credit card. Have not used the site for 6 months. Thought I signed up for 1 year. I do not remember anything about auto renew. This is a complete scam. I have a request to be reimbursed. Too bad because I know many professional women I have referred to this site. I will spread the word not to. Word of mouth is everything. The return on the $140 they unfairly charged will cost them dearly.
Hi Elizabeth, have you checked out our Terms of Use to see if you are eligible for a refund? Our terms state "If you have a paid membership subscription that is automatically renewed, we will refund the most recent charge to your credit card if (i) you cancel your subscription within thirty (30) days after the most recent charge, and (ii) you have not used your subscription during the current renewal period." Please make sure to get in touch with us if you are eligible for the refund and did not intend to have your subscription renew again. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Answer: Hello, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and they are currently investigating Care.com. This is important enough to me that they have scammed me out of 6 months of payments and I had to close my credit card for Fraud. If you have had a bad experience with Care.com, I would encourage you to file a complaint with BBB. If enough people complain, then they will take more serious action. Here is the website. It is a short process to submit a complaint. https://www.bbb.org/consumer-complaints/file-a-complaint/get-started
Answer: Steer clear from Care.com or what we prefer to call Care-aless. Com! They are only about profit for them. The site is for trollers that prey on innocent families. You'd be better off putting an ad in your local newspaper. Most local newspapers also have online readership too!
Answer: I am determined to shut this site down. I am contacting news programs, The Today Show, Good Morning America and any and all others. Shut them down!
Answer: This is so sad! I have been on both sides as I have an assisted living home in Pensacola Florida. I used care.com to staff my home; awful. Then when I had myself on as a provider they suspended me for a 14 year old non viloent misdemeanor, and they did not even have my permission to check past 7. They want you to get crappy providers, the good ones are kicked off because once ya get a good one, you no longer need them. Cash cow corrupt company who makes rules up as they go along, I heard 20/20 is doing a special. I plan to contact them, as I am verifiably the best care coordinator hands down, extremely good with direct care. You will only ever be returned 1 month contact the Federal Trade Commission file a complaint that's what I did, the more problems the better the case against care, com
Answer: I would be cautious. I hope she is not moving for the job, as that is NOT a good idea. I get text messages daily from people asking me to email them (often for a friend), or someone coming from out of town or whatever. I delete these right away. First of all, they should go through the regular website and email you. No one would hire anyone without first meeting them, checking references, etc. I am sitting at the home of someone I took with through the Care site. I first communicated via email, then set up a face to face and met the kids. If it seems too good to be true, it is. USE COMMON SENSE! Seriously, if you don't have common sense you really shouldn't be taking care of kids, pets or anyone else!
Answer: Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe they have a big money backer and can screw people of their money and lack of customer service? They should be called, I don't care.com
Answer: If I were you I'd choose another site. Care.com is terrible.
Answer: Some of the clients are looking for cheap labor through the internet for housekeeping. I usually tell the person to call me back for interview finish. Then I would tell them that I am self-employed and they would need to file a 1099 for taxes to IRS.
Answer: Care.com is set up for parents that pay for the service... Parents can enroll for free and place and add. However, If they do not forward their credit card any messages from caregivers will have a blocked phone number. The babysitter cam also enroll for free and make a profile for her services. However if she does nor forward her credit card she can only apply to 8 jobs every 28 days and only the ads from parents that have paid for an account will be able to contact her. DO NOT respond to anyone contacting you on your phone that did not contact through Care.com first... This is always a scam... The message will look like this: I am moving to your area soon and need car for my son/daughter. Kindly respond to my email.(They are looking to scam you for money.)
Answer: Sitter city.com could help you. I have honestly had nothing but problems with care.com. They make up rules as they decide not how things are written and do not follow their own privacy policy. They feed on single moms and dads. As well as children providing for aging parents You can place an add on Craigslist as well, for free and your prospective employee provides their own background check as it can be a most recent one and obtained by themselves at 5 to 10 dollars
Hi Joanna, I would be happy to explain our membership options for some clarification! As an individual care giver, you can create an account for free, build your profile, search for, and apply to jobs on the site. We also have the option of upgrading to a Featured membership. With this, you will show up as "Featured", get a preliminary background check for free, and are able to contact families outside of their job postings.
If you are looking for care for yourself or your family, you can also create and build a profile for free. You are also able to post a job and search for care providers in your area. People can see, and respond to, your job posting as well. You are right that in order to contact anyone back you would need to upgrade the account. The free membership is a great way to see if there are care givers in your area who are going to be interested and available before deciding to upgrade the account.
I really hope this helps to clear up any confusion and answer any questions you may have about our subscription options! Best wishes!
