I want to share our recent experience with Ancestry DNA, and it's not a positive one. My family and I embarked on this journey to discover our ancestry and hopefully find answers to some long-standing questions, but sadly, it has been a frustrating and disheartening process.
Firstly, the waiting time was excruciatingly long. It took nearly 2 months just to receive the DNA kit, and then another 5 weeks of waiting for results. Other private services offer much quicker turnarounds, making this delay seem unnecessary and frustrating.
The most devastating blow came when we were informed that my mother-in-law's DNA sample couldn't be processed, forcing us to start the entire process over again. We were even willing to pay for a faster delivery service, but we were told this wasn't an option, which left us puzzled and disappointed.
Now, we have the unenviable task of explaining to my mother-in-law that she has to wait another 3 months for results. This news has been emotionally distressing for all of us, and we're more concerned about her well-being than any timeframe.
While we understand the importance of accuracy in DNA analysis, the current process and communication from Ancestry DNA have been far from ideal. We had hoped this journey would bring closure and answers to our family, but instead, it has added to our emotional burden.
We sincerely hope that Ancestry DNA can improve their service to provide customers with a smoother and more efficient experience. Our family's quest for answers has been put on hold, and it's disheartening to say the least.
This charged showed up on my credit card account 3 years ago, despite me NEVER signed up for this. Despite blocking them from my credit card and filing fraud charges every year, it keeps showing up. The customer service at Ancestry might be at the top of the worst list that I've ever experienced. Because of this poor service and the fact that despite 3 years of reporting this transaction that was NEVER authorized, I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone, ever.
The Ancestry company is a SCAM. They would not refund me one day after my free trail which I though the 14th day. I then cancelled my membership, and they charged me a $25 cancellation fee and difficulty canceling their memberships after the free trial. This company should be closed down. I will tell my whole family to look at other Ancesrty tree companies.
Ordered the AncestryDNA kit and got fascinating insights into my heritage. Simple saliva test, but the results took a bit longer than expected. Overall, a wonderful eye-opening experience!
One error after another. Funny how my great aunt didn't know when her own brother was born but was off by ten months. Funny how a pure Ashkenazi Jew mysteriously presents with one percentScottish DNA. I am frankly surprised they didn't try to convince me that I was X percent black, just likeHenry Louis Gates is always trying to sell. Ancestry should get together with Gates. Maybe they could. Convince the king of Sweden that he's black.
I am extremely frustrated and upset at the fact that I cancelled my free trial prior to the renewal and still got charged. I was sitting with my family and they all witnessed when I cancelled my free trial, and today, I got billed $65 and it over drafted my account. For people who don't have an overabundance of money, this is a serious issue. I asked around all morning to see if this could be refunded, and each and every person said that these charges are non refundable, even though it was the fault of the COMPANY. I do NOT need these services, and am disappointed at the fact that there is no easy solution to fix this mistake on behalf of Ancestry. I will be writing reviews elsewhere and will be letting friends and family know not to trust this service. There was even a topic in the feedback form listed as "Being Charged After Cancelling" which shows that this must happen often, and yet still, there is no easy fix. Can't imaging how much money they must make from screwing people over like this. Scam.
I have been a member for a long time. When I asked for a print of my tree I was referred to I believe it's called MyCanvas. They said they can't print from my tablet. I went back to Ancestry asking if I could pay for them to make a copy and mail it to me. The answer was no they weren't able to do that. A large firm like that can't make a print on one of their many machines. In addition I can't see my tree online. Where can I get the tree information?
Be careful, this company will happily charge your credit card forever even if the account is never used. I made the mistake of registering the account in my father's email. The account was never used yet they happily billed my credit card for years. WARNING: NEVER sign up for a subscription with this company.
And worse, having taken your money they won't even give you a refund. Disgusting!
I only gave a 1 star because 0 was not an option. I renewed my world subscription month to month after not being on ancestry for a year or two. After a few months getting caught up on my tree I decided to cancel again. The next month it comes out of my account again. So I think to myself maybe I didn't do something right and go through and cancel it again and make sure. I did this and it came out again this month. I called and their customer service is the worst I have ever dealt with. I was told because I don't have a confirmation number there was nothing that could be done. To anyone interested in ancestry watch your membership very closely. When you cancel take screenshots of the confirmation and save any emails because they are very petty. And when I told the customer service rep they needed to do something about the cancelation process because it shouldn't be that hard to cancel something he laughed at me out loud. So they think we are funny and they are just sitting back laughing their asses off while they take our money. Well I have been a member since 2009 and they will never get another penny of my money!
A few Years ago I was able to use Ancestry.com to help me research my deceased mother and father's dates of birth and even their parents for a security clearance. Now, the only thing it will allow me to do is find out who my mother was married to. That's it. I had lost that information and needed it again for a passport. No luck, it will only give up spousal information and nothing else. Not only that, the site is annoying with it's constant pop-ups. The one and only pop-up points you to a useless search that will give you spousal information. You can't search for birth or death certificates. It's a waste of money and I canceled on the first day of my free trial.
I forgot to cancel my subscription and was charged $169 for a six-month renewal. It would have been great customer service for Ancestry to remind me of the upcoming renewal. I suspect this is how they make a good portion of their money. Additionally, their coverage of Eastern Europe is pretty weak.
Absolutely the worst customer service I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I should have read the reviews prior to not choosing another company. Shame, dropping from the #1 rated company in this line of service to #68 should tell them they need to do something different. Wish them the best, my guess is if I would have waited a year they would have been out of business and not an option.
I signed up for a free trial and received no notification of a $259 renewal months later! No refund!
Canadian Users Beware!
I just spent an hour on the chat with Ancestry. Turns out that way back in 2014 I somehow went to the US site (possibly through the "visit our other sites" box at the bottom of the page) and, without any kind of warning, my subscription was changed to US and never changed back. Therefore, I have been paying for a US subscription for the last 9 years - which is about $1,500 or more dollars extra. They offered me 6 months of free All Access. I declined and asked to have the issue escalated to someone who could do more and the support person on chat ended it - in effect, hanging up on me! I posted this on the Ancestry Facebook page and it definitely seems like I am NOT the only one. Luckily others noticed their charges sooner but obviously this is a real scam they are running on people. I have been a member of Ancestry since 2007. I will definitely be looking to change once this subscription ends. Ancestry, you should be ashamed of the way you are duping people and the terrible way you respond to them!
Took forever to recieve kit. Instructions were terrible. Service was rotten, no ability to help with issues.
I did the intro price and decided to get the DNA kit to see what my ethnicity mix was as Im adopted. Also I would have my DNA coding for searching for my mother. I have been charged after canceling and there is no way to call a person. I have printed my cancelation again, and am going to have to change the number on my credit card to stop the 249.00 charge every six months.
Don't fall for the free trial. I tried to cancel and for whatever reason it didn't go through on their end so they are charging me $26. It's still pending on my bank account and hasn't actually posted yet. I contacted ancestry 3 times trying to get this taken care of. My bank is requiring me to wait until the transaction has actually posted before disputing it. It's creating a big hassle over $25 but this company is super scammy and makes it difficult to cancel their memberships or free trials.
It's not worth it. Use a different genealogy site.
No clue of their results. My son and daughter are siblings and they have them as half siblings.
My auntie, as my cousin. My great grand parents as hints, but they want to charge me in order to open the report. Just another ripoff.
I went on the site cancel my renewal they claim it never was cancelled and they refused to refund me the money now my account was overdrawn and fees added for that overdrawn debt that wasn't calculated into the budget I had set up in my account there policy very confusing and the company don't care about there customers when it comes to refunds, otherwise the service was great the site was great no issues until you asked for a refund then your no longer a customer just a inconvenience in there day be very careful on giving you financial information they will scam you "legally"
Answer: I agree... so many current complaints yet they seem to be more concerned with signing up new, younger members who are more deeply engaged in technology. It is business to these folks and they have to get younger people joining to make more money long term. Baby boomers though are their natural market and as more boomers retire and have more time and discretionary income they will be the ones who will be likely to join over the next few years.
Answer: Hi Joan, I see Karen above has answered your question regarding the old site. Full that box in Joan, tell them why you are leaving, give it to them straight. Write what you have put above, and more if so inclined. I have told them exactly what I think of their new so called experience! I think they have got a nerve inflicting this on us without even asking. They have made so many errors on the profiles, I know I shall have to check through every person on my tree, the mistakes they have put on are unbelievable, maps have been added that have nothing to do with the person. But the whole new set up is not enjoyable to use at all, the background colour is very hard on the eyes. I hate this new site with a passion! They should give us the choice of the format. From feedback I have seen, most of their long term customers much prefer the old site, Ancestry don't seem to realise what a great unique format they had, it was really classy, I loved working on it for hours and hours. They should listen to their customers, because they are going to be leaving their site in droves when the old ancestry is not available anymore. I shall use the old site as long as possible, then look for somewhere else to do my researching
Answer: Go to the right side of the page up at top where you sign in, and in the pull down menu there will be a place to go back to the old, classic ancestry, you know however, soon they are pulling the plug
