We have been looking at several dogs and no one returns our calls, let us know if the dog was adopted or even responded to an email. You'd think with all the dogs they say they are overrun with because of people surrendering their pets that they would be a little more people friendly and trying to get these animals actual loving homes. We have hit more dead ends with these people than anyone we've contacted. We found a dog we really liked, filled out the application, emailed a couple times... nothing! Very upset!

When contacting someone about rehoming a pet, ask for a Youtube link on videos about the pet you want. I adopted out two cats on this site. Videos really provide a lot more info. Shelters in Houston, Texas area are usually full of cats, kittens, dogs and puppies needing homes. Good luck! AG 02/07/2021

A year ago, I adopted my current cat Jelly and it was a smooth process. Recently we have been looking for a sibling/playmate for her because our work schedules have been getting busier and we don't want her to be lonely. However, every single person or shelter I have emailed never replies back. It makes me wonder- is AdoptaPet really sending my emails out? It's getting annoying- they don't even let you know when a pet has gotten adopted, you have to find out by checking the page of the pet every single day. 5 stars for the way Jelly was adopted, but minus two stars for this service.

I had my lovely cat advertised on this website for several months. I got NO interested families, emails, questions, etc. How is that possible? Could it be the $50 adoption fee? Either way, It seems like they need help in attracting people / families to the website. There are many people with legitimate reason as as to why they need to Rehome their pet. This website does a great job making it appear that no one is interested in your pet, so that you can change your mind and remove your account. I would not recommend this to anyone looking for someone to adopt their pet. It needs improvement.

Is this a scam?
November 10, 2020

I was doing a search and it said there where 50 labs within 50 miles of me, I was so excited to look at & I saw pics of dogs super quick (not labs) and a page came up to have me sign up so I did and now, there are no longer 50 or any dogs to look at! Why is it, all I see is commercials for abused pets, but can't find one to give a loving home, WTH? I know aspca is one of the biggest scams (look the finacials up, it's true), but now these guys too!?

UNRELIABLE. POOR SUPPORT.
(virtually non-existent as far as I can tell)
I lost an opportunity because the site failed to work when I needed it.
I posted a pet profile in detail and finally got an application from someone who wanted this cat. Somehow Adopt A Pet simple lost my pet profile and the applicant adopted somewhere else. For me, Adopt A Pet is a good idea and would be a great asset if it were RELIABLE but ended up a disappointing waste of time. I could not quickly reactivate the pet profile and lost a rare opportunity.

Sites like this help facilitate a "bait & switch" from local pet rescues. Like many of you, I have spent a lot of time completing adoption applications only to be told the pet is no longer available by the time it is approved. Each rescue has 20-30+ application questions, which are not standardized. Unfortunately, my references, local veterinarian, and I waste a lot of time with each application submitted.

If you get through to a pet rescue to ask about the status of your application and/or availability, you tend to get excuses like - already adopted, short staffed, all volunteer helpers, not enough resources, plenty of other pets available, popular vs. unpopular breeds, etc... But, in many situations, you had already selected a specific pet to adopt. These excuses only exacerbate the frustration and indignation of the adoption process.

There should be an industry standard to communicate whether a pet is (1) available, (2) under consideration or adoption is in progress, and (3) adopted. Several of you also suggested a rating system indicating whether the pet rescue center meets approved credentialing. I. e. Verify the 501 (c) (3) status

The pet rescue industry has many problems. Remember, many of these organizations are 501 (c) (3) exempt entities. They must follow State and Federal laws to stay in business. Report bad actors to the State Attorneys General and Better Business Bureau.

Adoptapet.com, like Petfinder.com is more like Craigslist for pet adoption than anything else. You are not adopting from the site, you are adopting from the listing organization. They just provide the marketplace to help you find listings and to communicate with the pet advertiser.

Adopt A Pet supposedly vettes the organizations that list on the site, but this seems limited to a Vet Reference and they do not require proof of 501(c)(3) status or that documentation to prove you have required permits to operate a shelter or rescue in order to list on their site. There standards are not transparent and there are a lot of bad actors and wackos to be found.

The only mechanism they provide for complaining about an organization is via email and that information is way too hard to find. This lets a lot of bad actors and wackadoodles stay in business and make pet adoption far more frustrating than it should be.

PetFinder (and all the pet adoptions sites) really need to provided a rating and review system like eBay, This would quickly identify the organizations to avoid and save people heartache and frustration.

They should also require a link to the adoption requirements and applications on the site.

If they were to do these two things, I believe the majority of the complaints about pet adoption could be avoided.

Zero Support
December 1, 2021

As listed in most reviews, I get no response. Now I question the credibility of the original owners. Business practices warrant referral to the District attorney. I too should have searched the web for reviews. I did get a sweet beagle with lots of abandonment and anxiety issues. We are working with her and seem to be making progress.

No dogs; just a scam
August 29, 2021

I called over this adorable Siberian puppy listed as being 8 weeks old and was sent an "application" to fill out. After filling out several pages the questions they asked were very personal financial information, information that could be used to either drain one's bank account, tax one's credit line or steal one's identity. I spoke to someone on the phone about this and was assured they were perfectly legit and on the up-and-up. I decided to wait and do some research and found this scam report site as well as others. Still, I wanted to see for myself. Six week later I went online and sure enough, the same little adorable Siberian Husky was there, still only 8 weeks old. Amazing how they stopped time! Adopt a Pet is, in my opinion, likely nothing more than a scam to separate a person from their money. Don't try it.

We were able to find and adopt our perfect dog in three weeks. I do not find that to be an unreasonable time. We are extremely happy with the process. Adopt A Pet provides information from many rescue organizations, and some respond quicker than others. I was amazed at all of these negative reviews since our experience was excellent.

Love my fur baby
August 21, 2023

I am surprised to see so many negative reviews. I'm assuming it's more about the agencies or individuals putting pets up for adoption versus the site itself. I signed up for alerts. I didn't pay for premium subscription however the first application I submitted was review and approved in 48 hrs. By the end of the same week I had my puppy. She was shipped to me from SC safe and sound. My recommendation for this looking to adopt; review the organization and/or individual carefully. You should never have to pay upfront. Make sure you meet in a safe place. Hope this helps!

If this site that pretty much covers a huge number of pets is not sufficient enough with people, responders, and sources, they should not be created and give people false hope and sense of getting a pet for the families.
Every time i liked a pet and sent an email, it took so long for them to respond and every time they said the pet has been adopted. Very disappointed. I wish there were more sites available for pet adoption. Because i only have the option of going to my local shelters. Not many choices. So sad.

Total scam
May 26, 2021

Won't call back. Address is a mail box inside a mailbox store. Total fraud, gives hours of operation what to the mail box store. Phone # is out of area, with no answer. Scam! Just feeding off funding, can't find anywhere or anyone around business that knows of them. Even shelters do not know them.

Have been trying to adopt for 3 months. Filed out a number of applications. All that responded state application reviews great. All have checked with veterinarians each time. NONE will go as far as to set up appointments to meet dogs. None advise if there is a problem. Dogs removed as if adopted out. Immediately relisted! Approximately 1/2 of the listed dogs pages are immediately gone when I open the specific shelter sites. If they are NOT trying to find homes for dogs or cats, why waste the effort? What is the purpose of this scam?

Seamless adoption
February 22, 2021

Im really shocked at all these negative reviews and i wont discount their experiences but mine was just fine. I didnt think to look up this site before using it and maybe its because im coming from the other side; im the person who gave up a pet. I like that they gave you tips about what to ask potential adopters, that was really helpful for me. Also gave you their contact info to contact ASAP. I dont think i will be using if i need to adopt, but as for the pet owners perspective, it was great. I hope its not a scam.

Do not use- scam
June 9, 2023

I was adopting a puppy through Adopt a Pet was about to pay the fee for an 'out of town pup' and his transport fee but the pics and vid's I received were all evasive, the 'rescue' organization never called me at any time m, they texted my references only. Then I looked into it and their website was last used in 2018, further inquiry led to finding out the organization was officially terminated in 2018. The pic on Adopt a Pet turned out to be a different breed stock pic on a reverse image search. I confronted them with lack of validity of their organization and they tried to shame me. 'Help Rescue' is the organization name. Then I look at Adopt a Pet reviews and now know this is not a trusted website and it's all just a scam. Stay clear don't waste your time and don't give anyone money.

Wasted time
June 9, 2021

I've been looking for a dog for 6+months. Adopt a pet.com is only one avenue of my searching, but the only avenue that seems to deal with scammers only. They obviously have no protocol for checking people/animals. Second time wasting my time with this site. Don't waste yours.

To get straight to the point if you see a dog you really want on this site than go full steam ahead and do everything you can do to acquire him/her. If you leave it in the hands of these adoption agents well than good luck b/c they are unorganized and all over the map. Our focus was on one particular handsome and sweet dog and 1/2 way through the adoption process we than were informed "oh... well he's not available. I mean, I don't think he is"... Fact is he was available on the website... once we got your vet check completed his status turned to PENDING (we thought it was us) and than days later they are telling us to adopt a different dog. Funny thing is that same day the National Great Pyrenees Rescue emailed us to see if we adopted him or not. So its quite apparent they are ALL OVER THE MAP. Good luck!
