Here’s what consumers have asked with answers from Disqus staff and previous consumers.
People seem to not understand that the individual "channels" that appear on the Disqus home site are run by volunteer, UNPAID "owners" and " moderators". These people are not professional media people, rather, they took the opportunity to create these "channels" when it was offered by Disqus. Anyone could have created a channel, regardless of their expertise or knowledge. It was a good strategy for Disqus to draw in more commenters, to expose to advertising, which is how Disqus makes their money. Freedom of speech only applies at the government level, not on these channels. The average Joe or Jane Disqus channel " owner" can essentially run their channels any way that they want. Disqus only cares about the numbers that are brought in by these channels.
The employee who said he does social experiments also has a degree in psychology so legally and ethically he is supposed to do many things he does not do as an employee of Disqus.
Like me, many people on here complaining as you call it, while I call it being shocked, are first-time users clueless as to how Disqus works, how it approves biased moderators and hate speech, how it mimics Trump's behavior toward opinions other than his own and how we all thought it was a real discussion board with real stories. It took one day "discussing" two topics to get me to stop using that thing, and I believe no one on here who feels like I do are on it anymore either. You are right that Disqus should be light and fun. So why is it that it's anything but?
